Got to pick with him once at the Philly Festival in '76. A really wonderful gentleman and, needless to say a great picker. He was driving a red Cadillac convertible with a license plate that read 16 TONS, and when he sang that song, he sang the last line of the last chorus as;

"I owe my soul to Tennessee Ernie Ford.:

Merle Travis was a great guitarist and song writer. He developed the "Travis" style of finger picking and he wrote "16 Tons" and many other songs. Thanks for reminding us of his birthday.
