AMERICA'S GREAT NATIONAL PASTIME
Written by Skip Battin and Kim Fowley

1. One of America's great national pastimes
Is drinking a Coke
Taking a smoke
Telling a joke
One of America's great national pastimes
Is playing ball
Taking it all
And thinking so small

CHORUS: But the great taste of Coke has refreshed players
The hot and tired
The weary and the sore
But the great taste of Coke has refreshed players
The hot and tired
The weary and the sore

2. One of America's great national pastimes
Is chocolate fudge
Carrying a grudge
Bribing a judge
One of America's great national pastimes
Is poisoning rain
Acting insane
Inflicting pain. CHORUS

3. One of America's great national pastimes
Is the worship of speed
Planting her seeds
Taking more than she needs
One of America's great national pastime
Is cutting the grass
Grabbing some ass
Living too fast. CHORUS

Thanks for reminding me of this song, Shadowman--I've always liked this song(and the album it was on) and am glad that it lives on. The album never got much circulation, and, at least at one time, Roger McGuinn said that it was the only Byrds album he didn't own--a catchy tune only needs to be heard once to be remembered, though--

Hmm, not sure if it's the soft drink or the drug they're talking about - I assume the latter, as I can't imagine the soft drinks corp using that as an ad :-)

The song "America's Great National Pastime" is on the Byrds record "Farther Along". The lead singer is Skip Battin. If you like this song, please look for the record "Skip" which is all Skip Battin/Kim Fowley compositions.

Thanks a lot!!! A mystery of several years in my tiny brain, solved in the MudCat Cafe! One lyric board on the web titled it, "America's Great National Pastime." I never would have found it without you.

Pasttimes or pastimes? (The first would be a pun)

New member...I could not find anything in the search bases to help me. I am trying to pin down a song from circa late 1960's in the folk-rock-protest vein. I remember the phrase "One of America's favorite pasttimes is..." and then some cynical rhyming cuplets about materialism or greed or war or something, and the next verse opened the same way, "One of America's favorite pasttimes..." with something else that was thought-provoking for its day.
I think it was sung by someone like Phil Ochs, but I don't think it was him.
Does this sound familiar? Please reply with the name of the song and/or artist. I can search it out from there, I hope.
Thanks to all,
Shadowman
