Subject: RE: Sessions in Glasgow in Wintertime? From: Maryrrf Date: 02 Dec 06 - 11:58 AM It has been a while since I've been there, but try the Lismore located in the WestEnd of Glasgow off Byers Road. I went there a couple of times, I think they have sessions on Monday nights. It was a nice session, mostly instrumental but some songs too, and I was made to feel very welcome. And the repertoire of most of the participants was Irish. Somewhere on the net there is a list of Scottish sessions, but I can't recall the name. You might have better luck posting on www.tradmusic.com , which tends to be a little more "Scot" centric! Good luck. |

Subject: RE: Sessions in Glasgow in Wintertime? From: Mr Red Date: 02 Dec 06 - 12:57 PM the Scotia BAr used to be a performance venue - all sorts of music through the week - though that sort of information can change overnight |

Subject: RE: Sessions in Glasgow in Wintertime? From: Maryrrf Date: 02 Dec 06 - 01:45 PM Oh and there used to be a session at St. Andrews Square (in the church, if I'm not mistaken) but I think it was mostly singers and not really Irish oriented - but maybe you could check it out. |

Subject: RE: Sessions in Glasgow in Wintertime? From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 02 Dec 06 - 06:49 PM Footstompin is a Scottish music forum, you would be better trying a specifically Irish one (thesession.org is mostly that). One place Irish sessions happen is the Clutha Vaults in Stockwell Street, and somebody there is bound to know what else there is. There is a long-standing locally rooted tradition of Irish music in Glasgow, but you may have a hard time finding it behind the crowd of wannabes who learned everything they know off Chieftains recordings. You get both Scottish and Irish music at the Saturday afternoon session at Babbity Bowster's (near the Tron). For my taste there's too much not-very-interesting Irish music and you can get a situation where the musicians might as well have table flags, with almost-non-overlapping subgroups playing Irish and Scottish sets alternately. And the place is helluva noisy. Look at my website for a collection of utterly basic Scottish session repertoire, it would be a good idea to know at least that much. |

Subject: RE: Sessions in Glasgow in Wintertime? From: GUEST,Bobby Date: 16 Nov 07 - 12:51 PM Neis Bar in the West End is always good on Sundays. The Victoria Bar (Vicky's) down by the Clyde is under new management, it's been tarted-up and the long-running Friday night sessions appear to have ceased. Pity. |

Subject: RE: Sessions in Glasgow in Wintertime? From: GUEST,Bobby Date: 16 Nov 07 - 12:53 PM Apologies. Thread above should have said Nevis Bar on Sundays, not Neis. Glaswegians have difficulty with their v's! |
