Does anyone know the chords to this GBS song?

I wouldn't have thought a guitar accompaniment would have suited it!   If you mean that of course.    Piano if anything, since it's a music hall song.

George Bernard Shaw didn't sing it - Walter Pardon did, and he didn't need accompaniment!

But if you needed chords, it should only need three and in very obvious places. Use whichever key suits your voice range.

I'm fond of Peter Bellamy's version.

Thanks Robyn!

So you are thinking along the lines of 1-4-5-1?

For what it's worth, a Google search shows 14 Web pages which credit Johnny Burke as the author of Old Brown's Daughter.

And here's Johnny Burke's brief biography.

I have been listening to Great Big Sea sing this on youtube, and they sing the last line as "and by jingo, next election, I will run for trinity". Can someone please explain this? Is a political office, or a common reference known to everyone but me? Thanks

It means to stand for Parliament in the Trinity constituency. In Britain you stand for public office, in America you run for it!

Oh, and Newfoundland (like mainland Canada) tends to use British words and phrases for elections (except for the term 'riding.')

I think Walter Pardon's version says: "By jingo, next election I shall put up for MP", i.e. Member of Parliament.
