Enjoy your retirement whatever.

Hey, Joe!

Does this mean I should phone you occasionally and give you a Mudcat update? Hear some more of your wonderful stories?

Hope it doesn't mean we'll see less of you -- actually, I'd really like to see (and hear) MORE of you!

And a lot of retirement communities DO have computers and internet access available for the inmates, I mean, residents.

Of course you don't know me (except if by some miishap you have had the misfortune to read some of my blatherings).

Seems hasty to me to get rid of PC

As you are no doubt aware now it isn't just a bit of technology, it is a means by which to keep in touch with people and a window to the world.

I wish you every happiness together where you are moving, I suppose one advantage of being rid of the PC is that you'll spend more quality time with one another in the real world, and someone you love dearly is of infinite value compared to some oul' box.

But would you ditch your phone? or your stamps and envelopes?

The PC is just another means by which to send and receive information.

Whatever you do I hope it brings you happiness.

Take care.

P.S. - you may not have much room, but PLEASE don't get rid of them all - PLEASE keep playing - why not start an accordion band there?

Excuse not acceptable!!!

Even my mom, age 88, still uses a computer... They have 'um in most assisted care facilities... Libraries... Coffee shops, ect...

Like I siad, lousy excuse...

Now had ya' just said, "Hey, you folks is a bunch of lunies so we're oughtta here" that would have been a perfectly logical and acceptable excuse for bowin' out...

Actually, Bobert, I don't think that excuse would have been a good one either. I know Joe and he's as looney as they come.

Joe, just think what an accordion tree would look like. Put a heavy duty hat stand in the corner and load it with accordions...

Why? All your life you're being told that this and that is bad for you, hell now that you've survived to a certain age it's time to live it up - go ahead and indulge yourself and when someone tells you that it's bad for you you tell 'em "yer damn right it is" and snap another cap.

All the best to the both of you in your new adventure.

You know what's best for you, But I have a retired friend still browsing with a 486! He points out that he only uses it for wordprocessing and only goes to trusted sites, and doesn't have an eMail address, so he uses a free viruskiller (or did, not sure if he can get one now)and he is an expert at formatting his harddrive and reinstalling.
I think I'm going to have to go the Linux route. Windows is becoming a treadmill of incompatibility and hardware requirement.

Brett et al-

Joe (Jets) is apparently not doing well. I got the same e-mail message from Jerry Blodgett:

"Joe Theriault is not doing very well. He was in Clover Manor Care Facility in Auburn and has been recently moved to Central Maine Medical Center - room 479.
Joe is well known at the Side Door Coffeehouse and other local venues. He is sometimes seen with his accordian playing as a street musician in Portland. He is an excellent performer, real character, and all around good human being.

I don't believe that his condition is very good, but I'm sure he would appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and best wishes."

I'll see if I can find out more details tomorrow and see if a visit would be welcome.

Joe is also a fine storyteller. I'm especially fond of his stories of serving in the merchant marine in World War 2.

I'm sorry to report that Joe Theriault died yesterday at the hospital. There were multiple complications, most of which were compounding in the last two weeks. Joe among other things was being treated for lung cancer over the past year.

The family will be planning a memorial service with music and I'll be happly to provide details as I receive them.

I've known Joe for years and he's one of the friends who played music at our wedding.

Here's a verse from C. Fox Smith's "Ship-Keeper" which seems to resonate this morning:

The last rose leaves the skies;
The river breeze blows chill;
But still with age-dimmed eyes
He dreams, as old men will,
His pipe between his lips;
Still, dreaming, seems to see
The lost and lovely ships
That no one sees but he.

The first time I met Jets was at China Seas - a shanty sing. His eyes danced and he kept apologizing for playing the accordian. I loved him on sight. He was full of life and mischief and stories. He was at the first Lobster Boil and he and his wife planned on attending the second. There was a note left on my refrigerator. But life interfered.

Isn't there an old joke about getting a harp when you go to Heaven but an accordion in Hell? I think they'll make an exception this time. I have a vision of white robed angels and souls dancing while Joe sits there on a cloud, tapping his foot and playing to beat the band. I can still see the little grin on his face as he played.

Dear Friends of Joe E. Theriault
Thank-you for the many wonderous sentiments and good wishes you bestowed upon my late father. He often talked about this fine group.
I too am a musician, and plan to carry the torch and continue his works and traditions. I also play accordion and inherited his instruments. Although I know many of his songs, I am frantically learning more from his CD so I can play with his band at his upcoming party at the end of March. Again, I wish to thank each and every one of you for the love you gave to the best father in the world. Please stay in touch.

Please PM "katlaughing" for contact details, per Peter's consent.

Peter, this is a great place to hang out if you want to be a regular. No charge, all we ask is a modicum of civility.

Peter-

Thanks from me as well for posting, and I'm sure that some of us from Maine would really appreciate an update of the memorial plans for March if that is appropriate.

And I'll also join Kendall in inviting you to join Mudcat, with or without "a modicum of civility." As we say around here, let no aspersion remain unreturned!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I'm very sorry to hear this. He was an occasional visitor to Mudchat and was added lively comment and good humour to any conversation going.

Peace old cat

Rhiannon

Sherlock-

Welcome to the Mudcat Cafe as a member!

There are several ways to "post to an individual member" here:

1. If you click on the little blue "PM" (Personal Message) after a member's name, a screen should come up for you to fill in. If you receive PM's a number in blue should appear at the top of the forum indicating how many you've received; click on it and you can view and respond to the sender. You can't PM "guests."

2. You can also send a PM to any member by going to the "Quick Links" menue at the top of the page, select "Send a personal message" and go from there.

It takes a while to learn how to navigate this website but there are lots of options, and helpful people.

Do you play with a contradance band in your part of Maine?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
Richmond, Maine

Welcome to the Mudcat, Sherlock!

There is also one other way to send a private message: click on "Personal Page" at the top of this screen, then follow the steps to "Send a message."

All the best,

kat
