Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: John MacKenzie Date: 06 Dec 06 - 02:59 PM Well that's sad to see you go, and getting rid of the PC is a drastic step, many happy hours to be had on line. Enjoy your retirement whatever. Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Rapparee Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:02 PM Well, they danged well probably have PCs at the retirement home. So hang in there, and pop back in when you get settled. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: ClaireBear Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:03 PM My best wishes accompany you throughout your coming change in circumstances -- may you find great joy in surprising places for the years to come. Visit when you can. |

Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Naemanson Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:13 PM The hell with the PC. Keep the accordion. And keep playing. And enjoy life wherever you go as I know you do. I hope there is a place there where you can keep playing. Let us know. Good luck to you and Frances. Brett |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: fat B****rd Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:23 PM Good luck and happiness to you both. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:38 PM Sorry, I misread the thread title as "cat bowling" which is something else entirely. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Beer Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:44 PM Treat yourself and stay with a lap top as Richard Bridge suggested. Beer |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: GUEST Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:45 PM Show one of the other folks there the site. Community library nearby with a computer? Best wishes. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Bat Goddess Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:46 PM Hey, Joe! Does this mean I should phone you occasionally and give you a Mudcat update? Hear some more of your wonderful stories? Hope it doesn't mean we'll see less of you -- actually, I'd really like to see (and hear) MORE of you! And a lot of retirement communities DO have computers and internet access available for the inmates, I mean, residents. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: katlaughing Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:54 PM Best wishes to you both and I second the "they must have a community PC somewhere." :-) Sure wish we had that Mudcat Retirement community set up! kat |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: GUEST,lox Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:54 PM Of course you don't know me (except if by some miishap you have had the misfortune to read some of my blatherings). Seems hasty to me to get rid of PC As you are no doubt aware now it isn't just a bit of technology, it is a means by which to keep in touch with people and a window to the world. I wish you every happiness together where you are moving, I suppose one advantage of being rid of the PC is that you'll spend more quality time with one another in the real world, and someone you love dearly is of infinite value compared to some oul' box. But would you ditch your phone? or your stamps and envelopes? The PC is just another means by which to send and receive information. Whatever you do I hope it brings you happiness. Take care. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: GUEST Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:57 PM Bret: I have a problem . I have 10 accordions with room for two with a new one coming in April. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Divis Sweeney Date: 06 Dec 06 - 03:59 PM Best wishes to both of you and respect and regards given to a long and happy future. D.S. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 06 Dec 06 - 06:15 PM I'm always interested in giving new homes to old accordions - but sadly I'm in Australia... P.S. - you may not have much room, but PLEASE don't get rid of them all - PLEASE keep playing - why not start an accordion band there? :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: gnu Date: 06 Dec 06 - 06:19 PM Hopefully, you can find a way back. If not, thanks for being here and god Bless you and yours. Slainte. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Bobert Date: 06 Dec 06 - 06:25 PM Excuse not acceptable!!! Even my mom, age 88, still uses a computer... They have 'um in most assisted care facilities... Libraries... Coffee shops, ect... Like I siad, lousy excuse... Now had ya' just said, "Hey, you folks is a bunch of lunies so we're oughtta here" that would have been a perfectly logical and acceptable excuse for bowin' out... Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Naemanson Date: 07 Dec 06 - 03:35 AM Actually, Bobert, I don't think that excuse would have been a good one either. I know Joe and he's as looney as they come. Joe, just think what an accordion tree would look like. Put a heavy duty hat stand in the corner and load it with accordions... |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Teribus Date: 07 Dec 06 - 05:54 AM Hi Joe, Sorry to hear of your departure from the 'cat, but here's wishing both you and Frances all the best for a long and happy future in your retirement community. |

Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Schantieman Date: 07 Dec 06 - 01:47 PM Well, congratulations on coming of age! I think a 'retirement home for distressed gentlefolkies' would be an excellent idea. Have to go easy on the ale though. :-) Steve |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: bobad Date: 07 Dec 06 - 09:40 PM "Have to go easy on the ale though." Why? All your life you're being told that this and that is bad for you, hell now that you've survived to a certain age it's time to live it up - go ahead and indulge yourself and when someone tells you that it's bad for you you tell 'em "yer damn right it is" and snap another cap. All the best to the both of you in your new adventure. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Gurney Date: 08 Dec 06 - 02:07 AM You know what's best for you, But I have a retired friend still browsing with a 486! He points out that he only uses it for wordprocessing and only goes to trusted sites, and doesn't have an eMail address, so he uses a free viruskiller (or did, not sure if he can get one now)and he is an expert at formatting his harddrive and reinstalling. I think I'm going to have to go the Linux route. Windows is becoming a treadmill of incompatibility and hardware requirement. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Cats Date: 08 Dec 06 - 12:52 PM Don't leave us, just make sure the old folkies home will let you use their internet access a couple of times a week. All the very best for your future. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: SINSULL Date: 09 Dec 06 - 12:02 AM Damn Joe! You were missed at the Lobster Boil. Where are you? Still in Maine? SINS |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Alice Date: 09 Dec 06 - 11:21 AM Hope you log on to Mudcat at the community PC in the retirement home. They MUST have one of those, so many families stay in touch by email. If not, will there be a library nearby where you can log on? |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: kendall Date: 10 Dec 06 - 08:59 AM Joe, I hate to hear this. You are going to be severly missed. Please keep in touch via our dear friend, Kat. Folks, this is the man who directed me to the mudcat in the first place. I think back on all I would have missed if he hadn't told me about it. Thanks Joe. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: GUEST,woodsie Date: 10 Dec 06 - 04:22 PM There's bound to be a computer there. Shit, if not do they allow you out? If they do then you can use the free public conputers supplied inn nearly all (UK) libraries. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: JudyB Date: 10 Dec 06 - 07:24 PM Joe - Wishing you both the best, and hoping you find some way to stay in touch with the community here once in a while. And hoping you'll make it to the Side Door now and again - those accordians are going to get restless if you don't take them out for a walk once in a while! All the best, JudyB |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Zany Mouse Date: 11 Dec 06 - 01:29 PM Old Cat NOT bowing out! Just find an internet café. We won't accept this feeble excuse!!! Seriously, I hope all goes well in your retirement home and keep those accordions active. Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Dec 06 - 01:38 PM Joe- I almost missed this thread and I hope you know we in Maine are not going to lose track of you. Hey, now we've got your phone number! When we figure out where you're living, don't be surprised if you find a used laptop propped up against your door with dedicated access to Mudcat. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Naemanson Date: 29 Jan 07 - 06:29 PM I just got an email telling me that Joe is in the hospital and not doing well. I have no details. I'm sure Charley will have more info and will start a thread on what is happening back in Maine. |

Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Jan 07 - 09:13 PM Brett et al- Joe (Jets) is apparently not doing well. I got the same e-mail message from Jerry Blodgett: "Joe Theriault is not doing very well. He was in Clover Manor Care Facility in Auburn and has been recently moved to Central Maine Medical Center - room 479. Joe is well known at the Side Door Coffeehouse and other local venues. He is sometimes seen with his accordian playing as a street musician in Portland. He is an excellent performer, real character, and all around good human being. I don't believe that his condition is very good, but I'm sure he would appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and best wishes." I'll see if I can find out more details tomorrow and see if a visit would be welcome. Joe is also a fine storyteller. I'm especially fond of his stories of serving in the merchant marine in World War 2. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: gnu Date: 30 Jan 07 - 06:04 AM Thoughts and prayers. |
Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Bat Goddess Date: 30 Jan 07 - 07:52 AM It's wonderful to listen to Joe tell stories not only of serving in the Merchant Marine in WWII, but of life in the mills and the mill communities of Maine. Good thoughts, white light and prayers -- wish we had some more details of his condition. Linn |

Subject: RE: BS: old cat bowing out From: Charley Noble Date: 01 Feb 07 - 10:08 AM I'm sorry to report that Joe Theriault died yesterday at the hospital. There were multiple complications, most of which were compounding in the last two weeks. Joe among other things was being treated for lung cancer over the past year. The family will be planning a memorial service with music and I'll be happly to provide details as I receive them. I've known Joe for years and he's one of the friends who played music at our wedding. Here's a verse from C. Fox Smith's "Ship-Keeper" which seems to resonate this morning: The last rose leaves the skies; The river breeze blows chill; But still with age-dimmed eyes He dreams, as old men will, His pipe between his lips; Still, dreaming, seems to see The lost and lovely ships That no one sees but he.
