As far as I recall, the lineup in the two gigs we saw near us in the early 90s was Gino, Cathal, Gerry and Kevin. Indeed, I have a photo signed by all four from that time. They've survived better than most bands do if all four of them still play in the band either sometimes or always!

Four Men and a Dog are playing a gig at Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, Derry, Northern Ireland on Friday 3 Feb, part of the Imbolc festival at an Cultúrlann. Cathal Hayden (fiddle and banjo) and Gino Lupari (bodhrán) are still in the group.

I think the line up is somewhat flexible. Sometimes banjo player Gerry O'Connor plays with them (I saw him with the band a year or two ago anyway). The band's facebook page cites this lineup: Donal Murphy, Cathal Hayden, Stephen Hayden, Gino Lupari, Kevin Doherty; and gives the first gigs of 2017:

Friday Jan 27th: Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 7:30pm, Celtic Connections Festival. [Four men and a dog & Imar)[Imar will be at Imbolc fest Derry on Wed 1 Feb]

Saturday Jan 28th: Printworks, Dublin Castle, Ireland, 8pm, Templebar Trad Fest. (Trad Gala with Four men and a dog, Altan & Bofin to Burren)

Fri 3rd Feb: Culturlann Ui Chanain, Derry (Four men and a dog plus guests)

The Belfast Telegraph says that original band member Mick Daly, a Cork native, was affectionately known as "the black dog," to answer the who-was-the-dog question.

Neil Johnston, now deceased, who wrote the lyrics to "Wrap it Up," is identified as a Belfast Telegraph journalist.

I found this today on the NGs.

I have been getting loads of mail asking if I will be playing with Beware of the Dog at this years Festival in the Barbican in London. The fact that Beware of the Dog are still advertised as playing there is surprising in itself. I will explain. Just before Christmas due to some personal conflicts between Danny Collier and the other members of the band it was decided that we would split up. We decided to continue our gigs up to and including Monday February 1st in the Swan in Stockwell. After that Beware of the Dog would be no more and Gino would continue his Gino Lupari and Friends gig in the Swan which he is doing successfully, I would move to Ireland and myself and Brian Mullan would be writing and working together with Barry McGuigan. Obviously Danny and Dick have decided to continue with the name Beware of the Dog and because of that Brian and myself just felt it would be better to distance ourselves from that form of the band which can in no way be anything like what we worked on for so long. As far as we know Gino has nothing to do with that line up either. Officially we would like to state that Beware of the Dog in our opinion does not exist anymore. We would however like to wish Gino and Dick all the best for whatever they do in the future
John Cutliffe and Brian Mullan.

Hi, its Sam Pirt here again I'm staying with Bill Sables this week but as soon as |I get home I'll be joining mudcat. Anyway back to the subject, Geno Lupali has now formed his own band that also has the name 'Dog' in its title but I can't remember the name. The fiddler out of 4 men and a dog has now started to play with the piper that used to be in the bothy band before they broke up. I can give you more specific names when I get back to my house.

Hi,

The band hasn't technically disbanded. The official word they're working on individual projects at the moment.

This all happened when Gerry O'Connor announced his intention to leave the band. I guess that was about a year or two ago.

Here's a little trivia for you: who remembers the dog's name?

Rich

I love it Catspaw. I guess you got that from 'The Good Ship Venus'

The ships dog's name was Rover,
my god they worked him over,
they ground and ground the faithful hound
from Tenerife to Dover.

Anyone know what Four Men and a Dog are up to these days? There hasn't been a new album in a long time.
