Born 86 years ago today (December 26, 1920). Happy to see he is still working his at his craft. My hat's off to him.

One of mine too. At school my piano teacher gave me a copy of "Time Out" and "Time Further Out" (the music, not the records) and I was never quite the same after that! I used to be able to play some of those classics like "Blue Rondo à la Turk" and "Take Five" and I'm still wondering whther to work up an arrangement of Unsquare Dance for two concertinas...

Happy Birthday Dave!

A lot of jazz purists hated Mr. Brubeck's pop success*. An attutude which has always bemused me. If more people went on to check out other jazz players then the effect must be beneficial for the music form.
Anyway Happy Birthday Dave.
*Sound familiar ?
PS Nice one, Brucie. How are ya ?

Oh happy birthday indeed. I just saw Dave in concert about a month ago, and he's still an amazing musician. Age has affected his walk, but certainly not his playing. He is truely a legend, and for good reason.

I first heard the Quartet as a young teenager. I was floored that there could be such a thing as 5/4 time. And floored that it could be so cool. Then the friend who introduced me to Brubeck introduced me to Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis and the amazing Buddy Rich vs Max Roach album, and if I can ever find that on CD I will snap it up in a second. Hoooooooooooooooooooooooly. Man. Pete Fountain seemed a bit 'tame' after that, and so did Glenn Miller, but I never lost the knowledge that music takes lotsa forms, and just because I don't understand it at the time--hell, that don't mean it don't 'rock'.

Never very fond of Brubeck's piano - but loved the group. Paul Desmond had such an amazing tone and lyrical swing on alto - and they always seemed to have great bass and drum players.

regards

86 and still playing - wow! And, yes, wasn't he great at popularizing things in weird time signatures that wouldn't have seen the light of day in less melodic hands?
