This time his surgeon is trying to give him more of a voice than he has had for quite some time. He took a little 'fascia' from behind Kendall's ear and used it to fill the right vocal chord, to bring it up to meet with the left VC.

We had to go to Albany NY for the procedure, which took place on the 7th December. The same surgeon did the original laser surgery back in 2004 and is one of the best in his field for this kind of work. With the pre-op exam and a night in hospital post op we travelled down on the 6th and came back yesterday.

Mary came with us to do the driving and keep me company while the Old Guy was on the table and I was very glad of her company. She and I were talking about our fears and both agreed that the worst thing about Kendall croaking on the table would have been the logistics of getting the body back to Maine. We agreed that we would have had him cremated and brought the ashes back - takes up less room in a crowded van as Kendall pointed out this morning.

Anyway, he now has to keep silent for about 72 hours from the op and then to speak very little for the next few days. I have told locals - no visits please until at least the middle of the week as he finds it highly frustrating only being able to communicate by writing.

The surgeon says that we won't hear the full result until, probably, the New Year and he isn't making any promises as to what kind of voice Kendall will have then. All he will say is that it should give him a voice. We're probably back down in Albany in about three weeks time for the check up and we'll see then how successful this has been.

So, anyone who wants to put up a prayer, to any God you believe in, we would welcome the good energy here.

Glad to hear you did get the "Grumpy Old Git" back with you, and in a condition where he's supposedly still capable of kicking (albeit not screaming at the present time).

72 hours of silence, huh? Must have been sheer agony keeping quiet for that amount of time... How about issuing the poor bugger with a selection of squeaky toys, so he can make his presence felt that way? If Seamus won't donate, I'm sure I could dig out a few from Milloup's box of belongings :o)

Anyroads, I'm glad to hear all has gone well so far and I keep my fingers crossed that the end result will be up to or exceeding expectations. Looking forward to hearing more of this, as the healing progresses.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas (whispering "Silent Night"), and a Happy New Year with lots of "volume".

Have Kendall tell them about the nursing assistant who was none too bright. Catspaw will appreciate that one.

Kendall's eyes speak volumes. He will be OK for a few days as long as he has his remote and his dog.

Bente - I only mailed the package. It is not a Christmas gift and you will have to open it to see who it's from (from whom it is?)

For anyone interested, the hospital in Albany could not have treated us better. Jacqui and I were looked after by some very caring people who kept us updated on his surgery, provided coffee and orange juice and most of all sympathy and a sense of humor. They even managed to get us on the road by 10:30 when they learned we were driving back to Maine.

Glad to be home.

I had a nurse assistant who came in with a series of questions. Over my bed was a huge sign that said TOTAL VOICE REST. At first I answered the yes and no questions, but they became more complex, so I handed her a note saying I was unable to speak. She apologized and started writing her questions! At first I was amused, but then it got silly and I had to tell her I wasn't deaf.

Somehow the word got around that I'm a humorist, so the whole staff came by to see.

Another incident... one of the nurses came in to do her thing, and at the same time one of the other attendants was there doing his thing. They were in each other's way, and finally the nurse said to the assistant, "Would it be easier if I get into the bed with him"? he said "No, it might be harder" I gave her a note that said "If you get into this bed, it WILL be harder."

All in all, it was a pleasant visit.

LOL....Kendall, what makes the first story so funny to me is that the same thing happened to me.

My wonderful friend Wayne is about as empathic as a person can get and has been in emergency med for most of his life. When I had the bypass, he stayed with me in recovery while Karen attended to things only she could do. I was on a vent and I awakened with Wayne's hand on mine. I wanted to know where Karen was but obviously could not talk. Both of us know some ASL thru Connie but neither of us is too great. I'm trying to ask him and pointing at my ring finger, etc. HE on the other hand is signing back, also quite badly. The silly part for us was that this went on for about 5 minutes before he heanded me a piece of paper and a pencil. I wrote in large letters, "YOU CAN TALK DUMBASS"............at which point he looked both chagrined and then started to laugh. My problem then was that you can't laugh on a vent and I went into a coughing frenzy.

It's become a great piece of family folklore.

Right now we're hoping for a speaking voice. There was scarring and rigidity to the right chord and that will probably affect the tone of Kendall's voice.

My voice teacher has done rehabilitation not only on performer's voice, but on her own, as well. She had a stroke and had to learn to sing and talk again, which included returning to the opera stage in Europe and the US.
When you can use the cords again, she says to begin with just humming a short note pitched slightly above the speaking level. Gradually lengthen the hum in duration and build the muscles up again day by day with the single note humming.

I have been told by some that you are more usually known to speak through a different part of your anatomy altogether. But I never believed 'em. It's a good thing you don't have a tin ear or trying to sing again would put you on your mettle, I guess.

Having spent eight days on a respirator in an I C ward after parking a motor bike in entirely the wrong place at entirely the wrong speed
and only being able to communicate on bits of paper I can at least say
I know what its like ! Military Nurses seem to have a bit more common sense than most , 'cos I didnt have any problems like that ! Which is probably a good job , as trying to laugh on a Respirator is HARD work !

For what it's worth: we knew an older gentleman who, in the process of acquiring a very distinguished service record in WWII, was wounded severely in the throat. The doctors told him outright he would never talk again. He worked his way, by sheer determination, back to a strong, clear, if slightly raspy, speaking voice; I don't know that he was ever a singer, but he could have so far as his rehabilitated voice was concerned. Hope some day to hear you sing.

Bernie reminded me of something that happened to me on a previous visit to the hospital. I'm lying there and the nurse, a very young, inexperienced nurse came in with a foot long needle to draw blood. Being somewhat intimidated by this old salt she said "I'm sorry, but I have to give you a little prick." To which I replied, "That's ok, then I'll have a matched pair." It took her a while to hit my vein, and it is the size of a mop handle.

Kendal, you have to remember that hospitals pay poorly, and hire cheap, so that the real nurses we were accustomed to in our youth have been replaced by a group of people just off the street, supervised by one real nurse for the entire floor. In this respect, hospital care has gone way, way down. On the other hand medical science has progressed so far and fast that even the cheap help can't totally diminish the miracles that can be achieved in medicine these days.

Get well soon, but don't push things too much. Good effects come from small steps forward, not giant attempts at leaps.

Dave- we didn't want to say anything until the surgery was over and the surgeon was happy with the result. We're still really just holding our breath to see if there is any improvement.

We can't fault the hospital at all - the staff were all so helpful and kind. When we discussed getting Kendall discharged the nurse did say that sometimes the doctors have to be chased up to sign the forms but I explained that we would have a five hour drive back to Maine and, by 8.00am, I'd had a phone call to say that he was being let out at 10.00am. That wa a complete contrast to the Boston hospital where he had the laser surgery two years ago - I couldn't even get an update on his condition the day after surgery from the very rude person on the other end of the phone. Mary had to ring back and use her New York accent to get the info!

Kendall is being very good about not talking and now thinks that when the time comes for him to try to talk he will have to force himself to do it.

He still hasn't spoken - he really is quite worried about whether he will have any voice.

For the moment it's probably not a bad thing - it will give the area more time to heal, but, at some point I'm going to have to really piss him off and make him say something. Either that or find him a difficult repair job to do and then the first word will be "goddamitsumbitch!"

His wit was dry (I did not get it either). However, since I mentioned Olive Oyl he referenced her acute angina (I cannot verify she has one) and thus the joke that no one but Giok got. However, I am glad we got verification from the source.

I explained a bit of dry wit in another thread and got my hand slapped because I was told to explain it, ruined it. Some people need 'splaining to in order to "get" wit or a joke. It this case we all needed an explanation and then it was funny.

We got back yesterday from the post-op checkup in Albany.

His surgeon is very pleased with his progress but the false vocal chords are still tending to cloak the efforts of the true chords. Somehow Kendall has got to ease the tension in the area to let the vocal chords do their work. He's talikng about getting VERY drunk to see if that works so New Year's Eve could be interesting!

Shapshay suggested that, in a couple of week's time, Kendal should start with a voice therapist again and we're looking for one that takes Medicare. The one he has been seeing doesn't and costs the earth which, right now, we aren't in a position to pay. However, we have time to look for someone.

We have to go back to see Shapshay, probably when I get back from the UK in March, weather permitting. He's talking about the possibility of 'fine tuning' his work, although we're not sure what more he can do and, more to the point, what Kendall wants to go through. That will be his decision - I will stand back and leave him to sort that one out.

Many thanks to Peter and Kris Cady for putting us up on Wednesday night - it made for a much easier journey to Albany for the 11.20 appointment.

I suppose I should mention that Kendall is trying reflexology, deep breathing exercises and a variety of other relaxation techniques. Over erving himself was meant as a joke.

Surely there are some good books on voice therapy that he could read and start out very slowly with those exercises.

Misuse seems dangerous to me realizing vocal cords are muscles and muscle memory is important. Otherwise, those cords may become "cords of wood" and not chords of music.

Basic solfege would work, but stay away from yodelling for a spell.

Just as long as you keep understanding that telling story--musically, verbally, or in writing--is THE most important thing you can do with your life.....You can teach others to recognize and/or give love & understanding that way, as well as give both yourself. Keep telling story whatever way is given to you to do so. But I certainly recognize that frustration of not being able to use your own voice can make for reeeeeeeelllll stress & pressure. I wasn't going to say anything, but I am my father's daughter and can't let it go...
To Tannywheeler....the most important thing he can do with his life is to continue to be a wonderful father, husband and grandfather and to continue BEING. Voice or no voice, stories or no stories. I'm just glad he's still here even if he can't talk.

That said, I hope the op works because I know how happy it will make him.
