Pity us at the Boat Inn.. the River Severn is a regular visitor to the pub this time of year. Shropshire is awash and the new flood barriers in Shrewsbury and Ironbridge mean water pushed higher into other areas. ie THe Boat Inn!

At the min there is about 6" of water covering the bar floor the chairs are stacked up - the peak is tonight.

THursday night during the session we kept an eye on the river, by 11.30 it was creeping into the carpark.

Regulars don wellingtons and tough it out. The markings on the door plot the flood levels.. the worst being in 2000 when the water came withing about 2' of the ceiling.

Needless to say when it gets too bad we decamp to another pub for the session till it is dry enough to go back.

We are hoping it will have gone in time for our Christmas Session on the 21st... mince pies and a tot of Irish whiskey.

Any other sessions have similar problems?

You could take the example of Stonehaven Folk Festival, which has an annual Aqua Ceilidh featuring such numbers as a Drip the Willow and a Splashing White Sergeant.

Ive been to Stonehaven. Its got a lovely harbour and we had some nice Fish suppers.

What the paper didnt show was the landlord with a radio controlled toy boat sailing it round the table legs!

Its above knee height today and renamed the Uboat!!

TOny and I are off to visit the previous landlord and landlady tomorrow. They have plumped for a pub on top of a hill this time:) Somewhere near Ashby de la Zouche. Im joining in their monthly folk session.

Premises that are frequently flooded can install blood barriers - in outline heavy duty impermeable membranes kept in trenches at the foot of walls and plugs to go in the drains - flooding looks likely you stretch the membrane up outside the walls and clip them up. It costs about £30,000 and may necessitate reinforcing the walls, depending on the depths and so pressures likely to be found.

But it does result in still being able to get insurance and maybe sell the property!

mm theyve done that in Ironbridge seems to have worked this time. Cant see the pub being able to afford to install its own. Anyway it gets a lot of publicity by being flooded!

Let's face it. The pub has photos of flooded bars going back to as early as they made photos. It is a nice pub - been there on the Museums Passport pub crawl and before then at one of the Bluegrass festivals years back.
I recall it was a nice pub for ducks...

Very nice place for ducks.. luckily not on menu tho:)

Hoping the pub will be dry enough for the session tonight. The river is still playing up tho.

Splashing white sergeant sounds very apt.
Perhaps The water is wide ? Im dreaming of a wet Christmas?

We have a Boat version of Drink old England Dry.
