Subject: Origins: Today Is Your Birth Day/1st Time on Earth
From: Joe Offer

This is not my kind of song, but somebody in choir asked me to inquire about it. She learned it a long times ago, in the 1940's or 1950's. Anybody know more about, know where it might be in a songbook, or where I can find a tune to transcribe?
thanks.
-Joe-

    Today is your birth day!
Your first time on earth day!
Time to be happy and gay!
So let's drink a toast to our most kindly host!
    It's somebody's birthday today!

Well, I know it's a corny song, but does anybody have information on it?

Well, the Barnard College radio station (WBAR) lists a song in its playlist a called IT'S SOMEBODY'S BIRTHDAY TODAY. The artist is Desparate Bicycles, and the album is "Remorse Code." Somehow I doubt that's the one you're looking for.

Also, there's a children's song called SOMEBODY'S BIRTHDAY TODAY, written by Frances Dillon and Christopher Hedge, and recorded by Frances Dillon (known as "Francie") on an album called "Toy Box." CD Baby has a sound sample, but that doesn't sound like your song, either.

I don't know where it came from but this song is a tradtion in my family - we all grew up singing it (I'm 42). But I learned it as:

For it's our __________'s birthday, his/her first day on earth day, a time to be happy and gay. [whoo whoo] So let's all drink a toast to our most charming host, for it's our _________'s birthday today.

For it's somebody's birthday
Their first time on earth day
A time to be happy
And gay
This delightful occasion
Is in celebration
Of years as they pass away
( they pass away...)
So with music and flowers
We'll spend happy hours
We'll dance and we'll laugh and we'll sing
So let's all drink a toast....
To a most....
Charming host....
For it's somebody's birthday today!

Sorry, mistake above-- I meant to write
" we'll laugh and we'll dance and we'll sing".

These are the full lyrics as I know them.
