Songs for Swinging Housemothers can be found used, it took only a couple of weeks of searching to find my copy. Really love this one. Folksingers Wordbook has been reprinted, you can get it at Elderly Music. It doesn't have the music, tho, so if you don't know the tune, you are out of luck. Frank Lynn (swinging housemothers) also did the Beerbust songbook. It is just that: a bust. I still am looking for his copy of Songs for Singin.

Two (probably out of print) books that lie around on the top of our pianola (I just peddle, my wife plays)are "500 top line greats" and "Life of the party" (c 200 songs) which both contain wide range of songs from different styles: serious, comic, music hall, pop, folk, jazzy,spirituals etc. I've not traced them on Amazon but may be in music shops.

For Ed Burk or whoever posted the first message: could the song book you're seeking be "The New Song Fest"? It's got stuff from "Abdul the Bulbul Amir" through "She Is More to Be Pitied than Censured" to "Poor Lil" --including "The Lady in Red." Published at a time when and in a milieu where racial stereotypes were commonly held and were a source of humor: "The Darkie Sunday School," for example--so occasionally offensive beyond mere political incorrectness and certainly not a "people's songbook," but interesting (and probably out of print). --seed

Sorry if what I'm about to recommend is free, but you can download a songbook from http://www.nor.com.au/community/musicmagic/SongBook1_A-Z.zip

It contains popular songs from circa 1960 plus and included are a number of pop folky songs. Not a bad collection for party pickin. Guitar chords are included, but its real strength is its collection of lyrics that people only half remember. I haven't counted them but there must be a couple of hundred songs in the collection.

The UK sail training organization called the Ocean Youth Club has a song book which it uses for teenagers and teachers on cruises I will try to find an E Mail for a past Skipper and post it back. I have a copy and could possibly photocopy for you if it would help

Another great source for out of print books is the Advanced Book Exchange. It is a large network of used book dealers with all their inventory in one database. I recently got a copy of _My Pious Friends and Drunken Companions_ (another good party book) through them. A search there showed one copy of _Songs for Swinging Housemothers_.

sounds like you want something like SHINE YOUR BUTTONS WITH BRASSO or those verses of She'll be coming round the mountain such as "She's got a lovely bottom set of teeth" and "she's got a lovely titillating smile" ? (censorious note - I hope that's not the only sort of thing you sing at parties)

There's a new book from Dover that looks promising if you like singing old-time songs with a group. It's called 500 Best-Loved Song Lyrics. I suppose I'd agree that Rise Up Singing is flawed, but I still think it's the best group singing songbook currently in print. I don't know if the Folksinger's Word Book from Oak Publications/Music Sales Corporation is still in print, but I occasionally see it in stores - it's a bit pricey at $35, but it's good.
Songs for Swinging Housemothers is a great resource if you can find a used copy, but it's long out fo print. Some other out-of-print gems that are commonly available in used bookstores are Ditty Bag, 357 Songs We Love to Sing, and one that I think is called Songfest. There are also several Fireside books that are good for group singing. You can find used songbooks at www.bookfinder.com.

But then you must have done either a forum search or a long refresher when you first put your query on an old and too-generally named lyrics-wanted thread.

Quite a few years ago I served with an Amphibious Training group in Little Creek Va. I believe it was 1960. On base there were in the NCO and Officers club a number of songbooks with old, humourous songs that go well with private parties, much like a Frat House party. Such songs as "The Lady in Red" were included. Does anyone know where one could find such songbooks, or Lyrics and music for such party songs. I would appreciate any response. Thanks, Ed Burk
