Thanks - I know a couple of verses and the chorus (including the soundbite which I was aware of) but was after the whole thing.

Thanks though

Nick

Here's what I pieced together from several sound samples:

I was feelin' kind o' wasted from wakin' on some stranger's ...,
Shakin' my head in the memory of what I'd said and done,
Ordered up a beer, pulled in my stool, and I sat down.
The sun streamed in the window on the old piano by the wall,
Some relic from a bygone day in some old music hall....

[There seems to be more than one recording, and the words vary somewhat, for example, "The relic of..."]

Are you still looking for those lyrics?
I once wrote down what I understood from listening to a recording by the John Wright band - and I'm sure I've still got the file somewhere.

Here's my transcription from the recording on Spotify:

WASTE THE PAINT
Written by Jim Hunter
As sung by Jim Hunter on "Sparks in Flight: Live" (2003).

[Spoken:] This one is to the memory of Wink Martindale.

I was at the end o' the bar, tryin' to see the damage o' the night before.
I was feelin' kind o' wasted from wakin' on some stranger's floor,
Shakin' my head in the mem'ry of all that's said and done.
I ordered up a beer, pulled down my stool, and I sat down.

The sun streamed in the window on the old piano by the wall,
A relic of a bygone age in some old music hall.
There right above it, as the mornin' light spread its rays,
Hung this old four-by-three picture that took my breath away.

And a voice right behind me said, "If you like it, it's up for sale"
As I turned to face a girl leanin' up against the barroom rail,
And I said, "I wish I had the money; it's gone the last few days,"
And a wisp o' hair fell on her eyes; I fought the earth to brush it away.

She said, "Waste the paint an' you can't go wrong
In the stroke o' the brush; it's in the line o' the song.
Good words come easy when they come from your soul."
She paints the pictures that no frame could ever hold.

Well, true vision comes in strangest of places, strangest of times,
But I found out that day that all I wanted was already mine.
We breathe life into our dreams, send 'em off into space.
This one's for the girl in the flat-heel shoes, the angel smile on her face.

She said, "Waste the paint an' you can't go wrong
In the stroke o' the brush; it's in the line o' the song.
When they made us they threw away the mold."
She paints the pictures that no frame could ever hold.

She said, "Waste the paint an' you can't go wrong
In the stroke o' the brush; it's in the line o' the song.
Good words come easy when they come from your soul."
She paints the pictures that no frame could ever hold,
Could ever hold,
Could ever hold.

[Jim Hunter also sings this song on "Uphill Slide" (1991) and "The Temple Records Sampler" (1992).]

Hi Jim,
Sorry for the long wait, I have been rather busy lately. Here's my transcript from "The Things We've Handed Down" by the John Wright Band (Fellside Recordings FECD106, UK, 1996)

Waste the Paint (Jim Hunter)

I was at the end of the bar trying to shape the damage of the night before
I was feeling kind of wasted from waking on some stranger's floor
Shaking my head at the memory of what I'd said and done
I ordered up a beer, pulled in a stool and I sat down

Well, the sun shone through the window on an old piano by the wall
Some relic from a by-gone age in some old music hall
And there up above it as the morning light spread its rays
Hung this four by three picture near took my breath away
When a voice right behind me said if you like it, well it's up for sale
And I turned to see a girl leaning up against the bar room rail
And I said I wish I had the money but I guess I've drunk it all these last few days
And as her hair fell in her eyes I felt the urge to brush it away

'Cause she said waste the paint and you can't go wrong
It's in the stroke of a brush it's in the line of a song
Good words come easy when they come from the soul
She paints the picture which no frame could ever hold

True vision comes in the strangest of places and at the strangest of times
And I realised that day that all I wanted was already mine
To breathe life into her dreams and send them off into space
This one's for the girl in the low heel shoes with the angel smile on her face

'Cause she said waste the paint and you can't go wrong
It's in the stroke of a brush it's in the line of a song
Good words come easy when they come from the soul
She paints the picture which no frame could ever hold

And she said waste the paint and you can't go wrong
It's in the stroke of a brush it's in the line of a song
Good words come easy when they come from the soul
She paints the picture which no frame could ever hold
Could ever hold
Could ever hold

I wrote to Jim Hunter some years ago after starting this thread and he sent me the words to the song. Perhaps even sweeter was (unprompted) he sent me the CD that it was on and hopefully enjoyed the version sang by a friend that I sent back to him

Top man
