Subject: RE: We Shall Not Be Moved From: Jon W. Date: 17 Mar 99 - 11:04 AM Mississippi John Hurt recorded a version that had more religious overtones - come to think, it was flat out gospel. Such verses as these (from memory):
I'm on my way to Heaven, I shall not be moved...
I'm sanctified and holy, I shall not...
Oh, preacher, I shall not... |
Subject: RE: We Shall Not Be Moved From: Night Owl Date: 17 Mar 99 - 12:28 AM The Civil Rights "era's" version that I knew of this song included lines like..."black and white together....; we're fighting for our freedom.......;" Its another one of those songs that continued with made up verses depending on the situation and the need to sing. I may have some of the real verses here somewhere, but it would take a loooong time to locate them! The chorus has the tree standing BY the water rather than IN the water.....(better for survival). |
Subject: RE: We Shall Not Be Moved From: Date: 16 Mar 99 - 10:03 PM From "The Original Talking Union & Other Union Songs", Folkways Records #FH 5285, c. 1955: WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED We shall, we shall not be moved (2x) Just like a tree that's standing in the water We shall not be moved. The Union is behind us, we shall not be moved (2x) Just like a tree etc. We will stand and fight together, we shall not be moved (2x) Just like a tree etc. We are black and white together, we shall not be moved (2x) Just like a tree etc. There is also a version from the civil rights era which is pretty much the same, but I don't think I have a version of it.---John (not Jon) |
Subject: RE: We Shall Not Be Moved From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Mar 99 - 09:05 PM Hi there Ted...The second song is in the database and is named "My Mother , the Queen of my Heart." Let me show you how to search the DT... See the box in the upper right hand corner? Pick a word or phase you are absolutely sure of and type it in...if a phrase use square brackets to enclose it... [ ]. Hit "search".....It's that easy. Since I know this song from one of Arlo's "jokes" I knew that "Queen of my Heart" was DEFINITELY a phrase. Had I been less sure, I'd have typed in Queen, Heart. catspaw |
Subject: We Shall Not Be Moved From: Ted McInnis Date: 16 Mar 99 - 08:52 PM Howdy Anyone know the complete lyrics to the song We Shall Not Be Moved ("like a tree planted by a river..."). Thanks. Also while I'm at it many years ago while an uncle of mine was well into his hops he sang a great song about a mother begging her son not to go to town and gamble but he didn't listen and got shot for his troubles and died in his Mama's arms. It was agreat song which contained a line "the cards were neatly dealt around the table" and it was quite lengthly. Alas when my Uncle was sober the next morning he couldn't remember the words. I would love to have the words to this song also. Thanks. Ted McInnis t.d.mcinnis@ns.sympatico.ca |
