I was a student at University of Saskatchewan way back then and had purchased tickets to a Pozo Seco Singers concert to be held there but at last second it was canceled and we were told that the group had split up because of an alleged love triangle . . . .

I know you sang lead vocal on "The House of the Rising Sun" and "Ribbon of Darkness." When I listen to the song, "Changes," it sounds like your voice as lead at the beginning and end of the song, but possibly Donnie's in the middle. Can you clarify that? I didn't go clear to the bottom, but we know about Don Williams. The beautiful voice of Susan Taylor is the one I was interested in. She still sings a little and goes by Taylor Pie. There's some good stuff on Youtube. She still has a great voice.

I reckon it was '66 or '67 when I first heard the Pozo-Seco Singers... They had come to play in the gym at Richmond Politechnical Institute (RPI)(Now Virginia Commonwealth University, VCU) and my wife saw a poster and we went to hear them... I must admit that before then I had never heard of them but go we did and it was great... I had been playin' geetar for about 3 or 4 years at that point and seein' then was very inspirational... At the time I really didn't know that Don Williams was one of the members tho we had two or three of their LPs...

Fast forward to the 70's and I was doin' some coffeehouse stuff and playin' the genure of the day (folk/country/rock) like everyone else and even was doin' a couple Don Willimans songs and still didn't have a clue that he had been the same guy I'd seen that night in the gym or a member of the trio until...

...one day I was havin' a conversation about Don Williams with someone and they mentioned that he had been one of the Pozo Seco Singers and it blew me away... First thing I did that night was hunt down my ol' Pozo Seco LP's and check it out and sho nuff, it was for real...

BTW, I loved alot of Don Williams songs and now and then, when my wife requests it, I do "Say it Again" which I have done so many times in my life that I can just do it in any key or tunin'...

The song, however, that has always haunted me by them was the one that went:

"Johnny, run to the window
see daddy comin' thru the meadow
whats that he holding in his hand...

I did some recording and a couple of shows with Lofton in Corpus a few years ago. We played a club on the main drive in Corpus and a house concert. I very much enjoyed working with him. He's a fine singer and performer and a good guy.

Wow, its amazing how many people like this group... Just to let you know as im sure you have noticed above, the group split up and they all went there seperate ways, but all 3 of them continued to persue there love in music...They did get honored in Corpus Christi,tx a few years ago for there music.. You can view loftons website at www.loftonkline.com, he has some music on there and if you dont see what you are looking for just email him and surely he can help you... He is still making new albums as we speak, He is actually in the process of completing a new christian country album.. You can get some of his music of off itunes... Any ways just thought i would share a little of what i know...

The albums 'Time' and 'I can make it with you' were done by the 3 of them: Lofton, Susan and Don. Lofton left the group in 1967.
Then, Don and Susan continued together and released the other 2 albums, not as the Pozo Seco Singers, but as 'Pozo Seco', without Singers.
After that, they split up. But, Don didn't leave because he wanted to pursue a solo career. He moved back to Texas and started a furniture business with his father-in-law. But, after a year they moved back to Nashville, and then got into music again, but, not with the goal to become a country music singer. Don wanted to be a songwriter. He started to work with famous writers like Allen Reynolds, Bob McDill, but couldn't find anyone to record the songs...so, finally he recorded them himself and that's where his solocareer started.

Apparently, the group was active 1965-70. The All-Music Guide has this biography:

Although they are most remembered for including Don Williams in their lineup prior to his ascension to solo country stardom, the Pozo-Seco Singers were much more oriented toward pop/folk than country music. The Texas threesome formed in Corpus Christi, Texas, where Williams and Lofton Kline had a duo called the Strangers Two; with the addition of Susan Taylor, they became the Pozo-Seco Singers. Playing cleanly executed, coffeehouse-style folk, the trio could sound like a far more commercial, pop-conscious version of Ian & Sylvia with their conscientious blend of male and female lead vocals and harmonies. Not as hip as Ian & Sylvia or Peter, Paul & Mary, and not as blatantly commercial as, say, the Seekers, the group had a few small pop hits in the mid-'60s, "I Can Make It with You" and "Look What You've Done" both entering the Top 40. After a few albums for Columbia in the last half of the 1960s, the act broke up, leaving Williams to pursue a solo career in the country field.

I didn't realize the group had only three members. I pictured them as being the size of the New Christy Minstrels. Their four albums were:

I just came across this information about released singles by the PSS.
They were released by Certron in 1970

Bringing It Down To You / He's A Friend Of Mine - 70

Does this make any sense to the PSS experts :-) ? Could this information be right? I don't know a lot about the Pozo's, because it's hard to get any material about them. The songs I have, are 'Don Williams - featuring the PSS', like the songs 14-18 listed in the previous message. I'm more like a Don Williams-solocareer expert :-).

He did write that song himself, didn't he? I just have it on a DW compilation. But I can't find out when he recorded it.
But Don didn't do Tulsa time in the same period as The shelter of your eyes. Tulsa Time was later, it's from his Expressions album of 1978, same year when that song became 'Single record of the year'. And The shelter of your eyes was recorded for his first solo album. I also should say that He's a friend of mine, came from that first period in the studios of Jack Clement. But it was never released on an album I guess....

My best guess would be 1973 for the recording of "He's a Friend of Mine." It was near the time he did "The Shelter of Her Eyes" and "Tulsa Time". It wasn't a PSS song as far as I know.

A good number of the Pozo Seco Singers songs can be purchased individually at iTunes. I came across them when browsing the Don Williams songs they had available. I picked up a couple myself but haven't burned them yet. iTunes is becoming quite a good source for 1960s and early 70s music.

Both Lofton Kline and Susan Taylor[Now Taylor Pie] have websites;both active primarily in Texas and the American Southeast......Don Williams is the same Don Williams who became one of the biggest stars in Country music in the seventies,eighties and early nineties....now happily semi-retired[I think],but still does occasional tours,including one in western Canada a couple of years ago[told this by an aquaintance,can't verify it]....one or two other people I think filled in when Lofton left[Russell Thornbury?],las time I saw them they were just a duo of Williams and Taylor,but still classy....

I worked for a few years with a program the church ran in prisons, when I lived in New England years ago - just to clarify: I was a volunteer for the program, not an inmate ;-) .... one night I had a presentation in whihc I used a rewrite verion of the song TIME ... you see Time was not only a great song, but the word itself had very string meaning to the men with whom I was working.

These folks were just inducted into the Texas Musis Hall of Fame (2006). I did a show and some recording work with Lofton Kline who lives again in South Texas and has truly developed into one of the very finest singers I've ever worked with. He's a great guy too, and I'd work with him again in a heartbeat.

Susan Taylor, now known as Taylor Pie is apparently active in the music world and Don Williams also has an active website.

Lofton had really good things to say about his former bandmates. We had planned to do some work with Taylor Pie last Winter/Spring, but things changed at the last minute due to some family issues with one of 'em. I haven't heard from them since.

Yup, that's one of the two albums I had... Speaking of I'll be gone, I know of a dynamite song by a sister of our friend's who wrote a great tribute to her father who had Alzheimer's.. called Gone Forever.. Their name is Curtis & Loretta, & they play professionally all over, but base out of Minneapolis.. They just released a new CD by that name with that song as one of the cuts..

To give you an idea, I'm laying down the 2nd verse & chorus...

This song really gets to me..& I don't even know anybody close with the illness.. Loretta & her husband are going to be doing a house concert at her sister's next week & we've been fortunate to be invited.. Looking forward to it..

Gary D, I only had one album and I do believe it was (is) called Time. I'm sure I still have it although my spouse has "organized" our records beyond all hope of my finding anything.

There's a song on it called "Time": "Some people walk, some people crawl, some people don't even move at all. / Some roads lead forward, some roads lead back, some roads are dressed in white, some wrapped in fun'ral black. / Time, oh time, where did you go? Time, Oh Good, good Time, where did you go?" ... Something like that anyway.

Another song I used to play a lot from that album was "I'll Be Gone."

Thanks folks...& yes, Ferrara, that's the gist of the song.. Sure would like those words.. but I understand about not having time of your own...I've been a bit burned out for a while, too.. Some of you who have communicated with me in the past know that I go hot & heavy on Mudcat for a while..then something happens to my computer or personal issues & I miss coming back for long chunks of time.. Speaking of time...think one of the Pozo Seco Albums I was talking about had "Time" in the title?...

I happen to have just gotten a Double CD from Music Blvd. (on line music sales). I am posting a frew details copied from the liner notes. The group's sound was born....in Corpus Christy TX. Donnie Williams and Lofton Kline.... billed themselves as "the Strangers Two". Susan Taylor... met them and they Blended their talents.

There are seven musicians credited on the "Time" album. If any one really wants the names.....E-mail me and I will post them.

Nothing mentioned about where they are now....sorry. I'd like to know myself. But ya all ought'a be pleased that you can replace those scratchy old LP's. BTW I have never had any luck finding any other albums by them. If you know of some .....POST "EM UP.

Gary, Ian and Sylvia did "The Renegade" too. I've always loved it. BUT. Have been spending too much time typing in lyrics lately, forgive me, I'm too lazy right now to hunt for the record, transcribe, etc. If I don't remember within the next week, and no one else posts it, would you send me an e-mail or personal message to remind me? I really enjoy finding and typing songs for other Mudcatters, so don't hesitate to nudge me. Don't know, but I sure did love them. Saw them once at the Shadows, the folk club that replaced the Cellar Door in DC. I still do songs I learned from them.

One of them was Don Williams, the popular Country singer of the late '70's and early '80's, who, if memory serves, was last months cover story in "No Depresion" the alternative country music magazine.

Just came across a couple platters of music from the Pozo Seco singers, a group I loved way back then... Curious to know any history about the group, & what ever happened to them. Do they still entertain? Did they break up? Or did they become some hot rock & roll band!
