Subject: BS: Chanteyranger in hospital
From: Elmer Fudd
Date: 23 Dec 06 - 02:30 PM

Following a performance with "In Harmony's Way," during which he started to feel unwell, Chanteyranger went straight to the emergency room. He was diagnosed with cellulitis, an infection in the skin and connective tissue, and put on an antibiotic IV. He was admitted to Kaiser-Permanente Hospital in Oakland. The docs think he will be there for a couple of days.

Any good wishes you want to leave for him here will be conveyed to him. All thoughts, prayers and general good vibes, whether silent or written, are greatly appreciated.

Heck, Peter, what is this? What a bummer to be sick at Christmas.

I don't know if you were planning to go, but I was hoping to see you at Camp Harmony, which is usually the only opportunity I have to spend quality time with you. So get better, already, and I hope to see you soon.

Hey, Peter:

Just wanted to let you know that Ruth and I are lifting up prayers for a quick and complete in-time-to-celebrate-Christmas-in-whatever-way-you-celebrate-Christmas. I know that antibiotics work wonders, and right now, they are beating the stuffing out of them little buggers that got under your skin.

I know you have family and countless friends praying for you, so how can you do anything but heal?

We look forward to hearing wonderful news.

In spite of all of this, have a beautiful Christmas season. If you have to celebrate a day late, who's going to complain? Not me.

You are blessed to have a loving family to support you in these times.

Love,

Jerry and Ruth

Many thanks for all your good wishes. Keep 'em coming! The docs continue to pump antibiotics into Peter and take blood out of him (for tests; as far as I know, blood-letting isn't back in fashion). However, it's too soon to tell what their ministrations are accomplishing.

Radriano is at the hospital with Peter right now. I'll read your posts to him a little later today.

Thanks again,

Elmer

I was just researching the notes from the Mayo Clinic:

Introduction:

"Cellulitis (sel-u-LI-tis) is a potentially serious bacterial infection of your skin. Cellulitis appears as a swollen, red area of skin that feels hot and tender, and it may spread rapidly.

Skin on the face or lower legs is most commonly affected by this infection, though cellulitis can occur on any part of your body. Cellulitis may be superficial — affecting only the surface of your skin — but cellulitis may also affect the tissues underlying your skin and can spread to your lymph nodes and bloodstream.

Left untreated, the spreading bacterial infection may rapidly turn into a life-threatening condition. That's why it's important to recognize the signs and symptoms of cellulitis and to seek immediate medical attention if they occur."

SOB! Peter... thoughts and prayers.

All who read... take warning. Anytime you see this, don't delay. I had a spider bite years ago that developed into this. Ever since, every little scrape has to be taken care of with antiseptic immediately and followed up with CARE. Now, I know that sounds silly, but it is actually quite common, even amongst the healtiest of us.

Just take care of every cut, scratch, wound, even pimple... times have changed.

I read all your posts to Peter over the phone, and he thanks you all very much. He appreciates everything everyone wrote (I skipped the Mayo Clinic info though, Charley N. Too scary). He's still running a high fever and they're dripping stuff into him. The next dose is scheduled for 1 AM. They keep musicians' hours in that joint.

The fact that CR is getting IV antibiotics is great to hear because it means they are treating the cellulitis aggressively, and because it was caught early he will be fine despite being sicker than a dog right now. IV antibiotics kick in very quickly, and although they make the patient feel out of it for about 48 hours, the regimen is as effective as treatments get. They are attacking both the strep and the staph, and he'll be right as rain soon. Hold that thought.

Hi Peter

Stop hanging out with Richard & you'll begin to feel better. He's got you singing & playing at all hours of the day. He's probably calling & visiting you at work "come on Peter, try this one more song". Then he's bringing catchy stuff out of the hospital when he visits & he's giving them to you. I'm telling you the man's a walking ticket to the ER. Once you're in there I bet he's singing you this new crap that he's just found & you just gotta hear & learn the harmony to it. I know Peter, just no rest for the weary. He's probably gonna set up a little studio so you can record all your new material while you're relaxing there doing nothing. Well, tell him I'm sorry you're not doing to well at the moment & to back off, or no more songs for you guys until you get better. Hope you get out soon, best of luck
Happy holidays & at least an improved New Year
Barry

Oh dear, that was frightening news, particularly when I saw a thread at the top of the music section - "Passing of a Chanteyman", which turned out to be someone else.

Now that my blood pressure is starting to go down again, I'm thinking good cleansing healing thoughts and directing them at Peter. He has been a wonderful Santee and more - one person I would really like to meet if I ever get the chance. (If my suspicions are right, I will have even more to be grateful for after tomorrow.)

Sending you a PM soon, Elmer Fudd.

If you gotta be in the hospital Christmas is not the worst time to be there. There aren't as many patients in, which means you get more attention, everyone feels so sorry for you because you're in there "over Christmas", and groups -some of them very good - come in and sing for you. (The fact that most of them are Christmas songs is a pity but they DO take requests)

So get yourself feeling better- and start enjoying it.

Let the healing begin...

In response to a PM, I decided to post here as it may be of benefit to others....

PM... "If I may ask, how soon did you get treatment after you got the symptoms of cellulitis? Were you hospitalized? How long did it take for the meds to take effect? How long did it take to recover?"

The spider bite was a regular spider bite. It was a red bump about 20mm in diameter, reddish, hard and itchy. I got bitten during the night and noticed it upon waking. Scratching made it hurt quite a bit, just as a spider bite will. Infection set in and the the adjacent skin began to turn red by late in the day... albeit very slowly. I saw my doc the next morning when the red area was about 35 mm and not quite round. He prescribed some heavy duty oral antibiotics and gave me a shot to get things started. With a pen, he drew a line at the edge of the infection and a parallel line about 7mm away... that was the "go to the hospital" line. I was fine in a few days.

However, since that, as I stated above, I have to look after every wound, no matter how insignificant. You all know how we just make a small wound bleed a bit and go on... not a good idea. Clean it, whack the antiseptic to it, put some Polysporin or similar on it and bandage it.

Since that spider bite, a hornet sting and a scraped knuckle have developed into cellulitis, simply because I did not look after them right away. Apparently, once you have had a bit of this, future wounds are more susceptible to it.

Of course, not every infection develops into cellulitis. I have had minor infections from wounds which took a "normal" course without meds or docs.

Again, thoughts and prayers for Peter.

Good news at last!

The cavalry finally arrived today in the form of a team of infectious disease specialists and pharmacists. They confirmed that the diagnosis of cellulitis is correct, but changed the IV medication. Long story, but basically there are now some signs of improvement: white blood cell count is down to normal and there are a few signs and portents that the infection is receding.

Thanks to all for your healing thoughts and prayers. They are being answered.

Here's an old poem to help carry Chantyranger through the New Year from the Draft C. Fox Smith Anthology:

Eight Bells
(By C. Fox Smith)

Eight bells chimed from the fo'c'sle
Back to the chime from the poop;
Out tumbled the port watch, cursing;
The cock crowed loud from the coop.

The sea was bright as a mirror,
The moon was shiny as steel,
When Ginger limped aft at midnight
For to relieve the wheel.

He spat on his hands as he took it
And the course, which was "Full an' by,"
And "'Appy New Year," says Ginger,
And "Same to yourself," says I.

"'Ere's a bit more meat in the lobscouse,
A few more plums in the duff,
A few less kicks wi' the 'alfpence,
A bit more smooth wi' the rough."

"'Ere's grub whenever you're 'ungry
An' drink whenever you're dry,
An' a ''Appy New Year,'" says Ginger,
And "Same to yourself," says I.

Notes:

From SAILOR'S DELIGHT, edited by Cicely Fox Smith, published by Methuen & Co., London, UK, © 1931, pp. 78-79.

This gruff interchange between sailors changing watches, seems to ring true, especially when holidays come and go while the routine of sailing the ship continues on.

Bob Zentz (US) has a adapted this poem for singing on his yet to be released recording of C. Fox Smith poems; an alternative setting was done in 1995 by Alan Fitzsimmons UK) as recorded on SEABOOT DUFF & HANDSPIKE GRUEL by Pinch o' Salt in 2000.

This came in last night from Tom Wagner:

I dropped by Peter's room today, but he was away from his bed: having an
ultrasound scan of his leg.   I didn't wait, as the nurse said it might be
1/2 hour or more until his return, but I did call him later in the day.
The news is good, finally. The ultrasound showed no further, hidden infections, and the cellulitis is responding well to a one-two punch of combined antibiotics prescripted by the ID specialist. He's on track for release tomorrow afternoon, and his sense of humor is already completely
recovered.   He was eloquent on the subject of his Xmas dinner as provided
by the hospital kitchens: turkey jello served quivering on petri dishes....and, is pudding supposed to be purple?

Keep those cards and letters coming though...he likes the attention.
Flowers might be nice too.   And chocolate.   And single malt, preferably
speyside. And maybe one of those inflateable ... ;-)

Since Peter doesn't drink single malt we can only assume that it's for his visitors.

While I am, of course, very glad to see that Peter is on the mend I also mourn the lost opportunity. Think about it, a sea-farin' chantey-singin' man with a wooden leg. What a deal! I was picking out parrots and tricorns for him, but now....sheesh. Friends.....

Glad you're better, ol' pal, and thanks to Elmer for being your press secretary.

Dave

And for an added touch, the peg could have been made from one of the Boomer/Windesmere poles used previously in a crepitation contest. What could be better? Proven strength and aromatic as well. I was going to say "aromatic to boot" but since there'd be no boot involved..........................

The above remarks about "peglegs" remind me of another old ditty "Dr. Dogbody's Leg" which concludes:

And so, kind friends, this evening ends,
Let's toast that surgeon bold;
Likewise his leg, and his famous peg,
Now these stories have been told;
And while some may doubt, the truth will out,
Your forbearance I'll not beg,
Though these tales be wild, I'd not beguile,
I'd never pull your leg.

Great news!!! Here is what you need to know katmyluv......or not.

The pole we refer to here is the "Farting Post" and this particular post was used in the first OFFICIAL Crepitation Contest between Lord Windesmere of Whopping Foghole, England, and Paul Boomer of Australia.

If you're unfamiliar with these contests, each contestant is scored by the judges on his repetoire of sounds and effects of his nether blasts. Here is some of the lingo you need to know:

Bloop - Sudden and rather dangerous blast (now dropped from open competitions)
Crepitation - The academic word for windbreaking.
Farting-Post - A 4 feet high wooden post, approximately 9 inches in diameter.
Fenêtre de Brise (Zephyr Window) - Aperture in the seat of competitor's trunks
Flutterblast - Self descriptive. (10 points)
Followup Phlooper - see Phlooper. (15 points)
Fundus-Break - Long, deep throated blast. (30 points)
Phloop - Short and rather dangerous blast. (2 points)
Phlooper - Long blast (10 points)
Phreep - Short and fairly high-pitched. (1 point)
Phuzzyphart - Self descriptive. (5 points)
Plotcher - Near accident. (deduct 15 points)
Sizzler - Self descriptive. (5 points)
Thundersprecht-The most difficult of farts, very risky. Can result in a Plotch (30 points)
Trillblow - Long blast of variable pitch. (10 points)
Triple Flutterblast - Self descriptive. (25 points)
Zusaarspiegel - The woodwind horn used to start the contest. Similar to a Mukkinese Battlehorn.

If you'd like to catch the excitement and action of that historic contest, you can hear most of it in two parts:
PART ONE
PART TWO

Although not widely known, Chanteyranger is a student of this artform so the chance to have a pegleg made from that historic post......well, I'm sure just the thought (if not the smell) will bring tears to Peter's eyes. Oh well...............

There are some of us who have chuckled over the "Great Farting Contest" and Mark Twain's "1601" for over 40 years. One would think that we would tire of such archane humor/humour. But no. When we hear that "The Champion is disqualified!" we still chuckle.

And sadly Charley, I am one of those "40 Year Vets" and you're right.....somehow, you just have to chuckle.

Then too, you can sort of find a brother every now and again in some strange ways..............A couple of years back I was in line at a fast food joint (Burger King actually) and I turned to see what everyone wanted and finally gave up after much him-hawing around, I turned back to Karen and said, "Ah the hell with it, let's just get 6 double plotchers with cheese".........and the guy behind me cracked up. I gave him a kind of curious grin, not knowing what he was laughing at and he said, "That's the perfect name for these burgers! Is that from the uh, er, uh.....that uh, you know, record?"

I said it was and we talked about when we had each first heard it. Is there an American male, specifically one who went to college between 1960 and 1990, who doesn't know this?

I swear to you, as many antibiotics as I have had these past years, they are as we all know a truly mixed blessing. Sometimes the side effects or the viral mutation bring on a situation the equal of the original. Hospitals here are all having severe problems with things like C-dif and others where the antibiotic treatment has become the cause of a new problem.

Peter has all of my best thoughts and I will be anxiously awaiting good news from Fudd or one of you other Frisco 'Catters. We'll forestall any further jubilation of the passing of gas for that matter until the lad arrives home.

Tell the Docs to get your ass out of there CR. Hospitals are no place to get well!!!!!!!!!!

Have people study some aromatherapy possibilities, using them only with medical permission at this point. I think the cellulitis could be helped fairly easily with some aromatherapy and there are some that help the liver but this is obviously a complicated situation so consult with experts. mg

Sorry for being uncommunicative. I was waiting for something definitive to report. Peter's still in the hospital. The cellulitis is just about gone, but there are some problems with liver and kidney. The doc thinks they are probably caused by dehydration. He says there's no cause for alarm, but he's pumping fluids into him and monitoring Peter's vital signs.

Anyway, it looks like Pete will spend New Year's Eve in Kaiser-Permanente, a happening place. If he's lucky, he might get to celebrate with some of that isopropyl alcohol, 70% proof (for external use only).

70% alcohol is about 140 proof. It will make his liver go crazy.

thank goodness for modern medicine - this new year will truly be a time of hope and regeneration after all you've been through Chanteyranger.

and from a less modern medicine - see if you can get hold of some Milk Thistle supplements - naturopaths claim that milk thistle can not only protect the liver, but assist in regenerating it.

good luck in your recovery, Chanteyranger

best wishes

Jack Freaking Halyard, your chantey did the trick. CR will have to re-read it repeatedly as his daily dose of the laughing cure. And about the part about plumbers. Peter said he comes from a long line of plumbers: father, grandfather and two uncles. So you were spot-on.

As to the isopropyl alcohol, indeed it would make his liver quiver. I'm sure the nurses will keep it locked up. I drank some absinthe of approximately that proof once upon a time. Nay, I didn't even drink it; I only wet my tongue with it. My entire body began to burn and suddenly the world looked like an awfully nice place.

Elmer-

The lab alcohol of choice is NOT ISOPROPYL alcohol; it's enthanol. Isopropyl alcohol is deadly in even small amounts. Pure ethanol will also do you great harm if you imbibe more than a jigger (paralyzing your tongue in the process) but you'll at least die happy, and your body will require no embalming fluids. Isopropyl alcohol is recommended for external use only.

Happy to hear that Chantyranger may soon be outward bound!

Charley Noble

Still no word yet about any chantey man seen escaping from Kaiser, though.

I just printed out the entire thread for Peter up to this point. It came to 32 pages, and that's in 12-point type with all the subject headers removed! Thanks to everyone who posted, prayed, joked, heal-hauled and otherwise kept CR in their thoughts--AND let him know about it.

The chantey man is resting comfortably, as they say, at his mother's abode. She, however, does not have internet. So anyone who wishes to send a message can PM me or leave a missive on this thread. Better yet, PM for his phone number if you're within phone call range. Even better, a Bay Area 'catter with a laptop containing Airport or another wireless chip might take pity and let him have a look. It can beam in on the neighbor's wireless.

So glad to hear Peter is up, out and about! I could lend him a Macintosh if he'd be interested. It is system 9.x and has airport, but I haven't used it so I'd have to check with another mudcatter to see how to use it wirelessly. It should be fabulous in comparison with a dial-up connection!

Happy New Year, Peter! I'll share pictures of Hawaii if you'll share stories of various antibiotics... ;-)

I'm finally back at my own place and at my computer (thank you Linda Mattson for your generous offer, though). I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the good wishes, healing thoughts and prayers, and good hunor of you all.....well, maybe I can;-). First, a tremendous thanks to Elmer Fudd. To take such time away from chasing wascally wabbits is a feat all of itself. You're the greatest. We talk often, so 'ol Elmer knows how much I appreciate everything, but I would be amiss not to say it here as well.

I'll be resting up this week, keeping my leg elevated when sitting or lying down, and then it's back to work on January 16, easing into things with a light duty schedule (staffing the visitor center front desk, catching up on paperwork and govt email, etc.) Yesterday morning I took the last dose of antibiotic. There's still a little warmth on the leg, but a call to the doctor today reassured me that it should go away in a few days. I just keep monitoring myseld, looking out for any signs of fever, chills, gastro-stuff, etc.

This Mudcat community of ours really comes together in times of need. I'm really moved by all this! What's interesting, too, is how much you learn about otherrs experiences with infections, hospitals and self-care. A thank you, too, to Radriano, Jerry Rasmussn, Catspaw, and Katlaughing for your phone calls Good to connect Jerry, Kat, and 'Spaw's voices with the mudcat monikers.

My Secret Santa sent a hilarious book, "The Little Book of Pervs: Sexual Weirdness From The World's News." Nothing cheers me up more than reports of a man having sex with a traffic cone, another guy leaving his wife for the pet dog, and yet another guy taking his blow-up sex doll home to meet his parents.

Thank you, JennyO, last year's Santa and this year's Santee, for your friendship, and to Jack Halyard for that brilliant parody of Away, Santiano. Well, too many people to thank here, so
I'll be sending PM's to all of you over the next few days. You all deserve a proper thank you from an improper chanteyman. All my best to you for this new year!
