Now I am an adoring fan of them. The man is six month's older than me. I'm proud my generation produced a man of such talent. |
Subject: RE: Happy Birthday Shane MacGowan 25th Dec. From: keberoxu Date: 08 Jan 17 - 02:10 PM Nobody posted for his birthday this year, that doesn't mean he is forgotten. Although I've never been anyplace near him, I think of him every Christmas. This past December was his last Christmas/birthday with his mother; condolences to him and those near him. As a US dweller I didn't hear about his mother's tragic death right away, not front-page news on my side of the ocean. New Year's Day....took eight days for me to hear about this. Subject: RE: Happy Birthday Shane MacGowan 25th Dec. From: keberoxu Date: 24 Jun 18 - 06:30 PM I know, I know. Not yet his birthday. On the other hand: this thread missed his 25 December 2017 birthday, which just happened to be Birthday Number 60 for Shane MacGowan. And there was a public celebration of the event (if I read right, not held on 25 December but a few days later), for which MacGowan was present in his wheelchair. Most of the music-making was done by other people, but MacGowan came on stage at one point and sang one song. For the course of a report on this event, the journalist interviewed a very emotional Nick Cave, who did some of the curating and MC'ing for the evening, and said: "this man is so loved." Now, here's what made me think of Shane MacGowan in June 2018. Rolling Stone magazine has just published an in-depth feature story about Johnny Depp. Remember how Shane MacGowan and Johnny Depp used to be fast friends? Perhaps they are still friends today, but joint sightings of the two are rarely reported. It's funny how what goes around comes around. Not that MacGowan has had exactly an easy time of it, of late. The pelvic fracture that he sustained, how many years ago was it now, is something from which his recovery is not yet complete. The full mouthful of dental implants was a success, and yet it must have been one heck of an ordeal at the time it was done. Then, in short order, the death of MacGowan's mother, to whom he was painfully close, in a car crash on New Year's Day a year or more ago; then the death of Frank Murray, former Pogues manager. Yet he is still together with Victoria Mary Clarke, happily so, and the mass media do not beat him up regularly as they used to do. Back in the day, MacGowan's every public appearance -- I don't mean musical performances -- occasioned comment, and often in print. And the comments were often not favorable. At the time, Johnny Depp was extremely successful, happily domiciled, a family man, and was supportive of MacGowan regardless, they even did a video together. Now MacGowan's life is on a rather more even keel. And Johnny Depp has been through the mangle: on location during a film, he had a mad love affair with the female lead actress, which broke up his family. His ex, Vanessa Paradis, made a graceful and emotional public statement and retired from the fray. Depp married the actress. They spent obscene quantities of money and had all these knock-down, drag-out fights. The divorce ensued, an especially nasty one. Now Depp, as reported in the Rolling Stone feature, has suffered the loss of his mother who died of cancer. And he is in a terrible fight with his agency/management and his financial partners, including at least one sibling; he claims to have been stolen from, also in obscene amounts. The Rolling Stone journalist paints a grim portrait of a man who sleeps during the day and is awake all night, who refers to himself as Captain Jack Sparrow, and who is counting on the Rolling Stone article to support his side of the story of his troubles. And I remember Victoria Clarke telling one of the magazines, years ago: "But if you want someone who's going to be faithful for life, be totally loyal and always there for you, then Shane's your man." And I wonder how MacGowan sees all this. Thanks for listening. P.S. I was absolutely FLOORED to discover that, years ago, MacGowan himself posted to a Mudcat thread. |
