Musical of course!

Amongst other things I got a few albums from my Amazon wish list -

Fairport Convention - What we did on our holidays
Mark Knopfler - Rag Pickers Dream and Shangri La
Kate Bush - Ariel
Ed Alleyne-Johnson - Purple Electric Violin Concerto

Listened to them all today while reading one of the other pressies, Neil Gaimans Anansi Boys.

What did the rest of you find in your socks?

Cheers

Oh, an embarrassment of riches:
Emily Smith - A Different Life
Steve Byrne - Songs from Home
Kris Drever - Black Water
John Doyle - Wayward Son
Malinky - 3 Ravens
And with all the holidaying I've had no time to give them a proper listen. Today for sure.

A guitar. Tried out a low-cost solid top Washburn when I was in London last week to attend the graduation & swearing in of my girlfriend's oldest son to the London (Ont) police force. Went into a music store while the rest of the family was mall-haunting and sat down to play a few instruments. I wanted a new campfire guitar that was a solid-top and this one was on sale and sounded and played great. So I went and got my girlfriend to talk me out of buying it and she listened and offered to pay half as my Christmas present. I love her.

I got a Toyota Corolla. It's musical because it gets around 35 MPG so I can afford the 100-mile round-trip into town and back to play music much more often than I could when my 14 MPG full-sized cargo van was our only vehicle.

Besides that viola, a CD/DVD American Idol How to Sing set. What the Hell? I should have mentioned to Santa that it would have been cheaper to tell me to shut up (not that I actually believe that Paula Abdul or anyone else could teach me to sing . . .).

And then my mother chewed me out for not telling her before about all the stuff on my Amazon wish list.

I'm listening to it as I type, and not for the first time, either :-)

Best wishes,

A fine CD from my Secret Santa, 3 Martin Simpson albums (Bramble Briar, Righteousness and Humidity, and Kind Letters), Nic Jones "Game Set Match" and Loreena McKennitt's "Ancient Muse". As to reading material ... "Who Killed Geoffrey Chaucer", "Thud" (Pratchett), "A Dorothy Dunnett Companion" and "Britain in the Middle Ages" (Francis Pryor).   Then there's the wind-up waterproof radio and all sorts of other stuff.

"His" contained a set of finger picks. "Hers" contained ear plugs.

One I got for Sue as a last moment stocking filler turned out well. A punt on a £2.99 budget CD by an unheard-of band called Planxty O'Rourke. Most of it is very good, even if it looks like someone has had fun making up the tune names.

Sue got me a router, and I've got lots of scrap MDF so I can make my own Stradivarius.

Blackie And The Rodeo Kings
Rory Gallagher (2)
Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life

Also rec'd from my parent's estate dozens of music books from old hymn books and texts to folk masses, psalters, and liturgical music.

My brother and I had a spontaneous piano duet of Frosty The Snowman on Boxing Day, the first time I've heard him play in probably 40 years. I owe my love of blues and rock to my brother so it was kinda touching...hope it doesn't end up on YouTube 'cause there were cameras, LOL!

Peace, Mooh.

My Santa, Chanteyranger, gave me a CD I had asked for - the soundtrack from the movie "Amelie". It's lovely!

Another thing I asked for, something I've been wanting for ages, as a Pink Floyd fan, is their Dark Side of the Moon CD, as well as a double DVD Pulse, which has 4 hours of concert footage! That ought to keep me busy for a while.

An old fashioned shoebox tape recorder, by request. I plan to use it extensively at a Fiddle Retreat in January. I gave someone a portable CD player with detachable remote speakers, also by request. I gave someone else a CD holder (book style) and some copies of some CDs I bought for myself recently.

Nothing musical. But Ive been given a very delap 36 base accordion and a friend sat during my christmas house session and took it apart and stopped it playing the reeds when not invited to. We hoovered out the dust and Ive been working out a few carols and Irish tunes on it. And sneezing:)

Oooowie! I got me some major mudcat boogie:

My Secret Santa sent The Boarding Party's: "Too Far from the Shore."
Jerry Rasmussen's "Handful of Songs" also turned up in the mailbox.

A library card is a wonderful thing. I am spending some quality time with the series, "Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues": A series of documentary films made by seven different filmmakers about the history of the blues. They contain terrific archival footage, much of it never seen before. There are some tapes recorded by John and Alan Lomax. The film about Chess Records in Chicago is particularly interesting, and one film takes place partly in Mali, in West Africa, exploring the African roots of blues music.
