Subject: Origins: Down in the Valley (All Dressed In White)
From: John M.
Date: 26 Dec 06 - 02:34 PM

Hello,

Does anyone know the following song?

DOWN IN THE VALLEY   [pg. 6]

The first time I saw her she was all dressed in white,
All in white, all in white, my God, her cunt was tight,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in brown,
All in brown, all in brown, I took her knickers down,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in green,
All in green, all in green, I filled her soup tureen,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in fawn,
All in fawn, all in fawn, two little bastards born,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in red,
All in red, all in red, two little bastards dead,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in black,
All in black, all in black, boards nailed across her crack,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

Notes: This is from the unpaginated Songs My Mother Taught Me: Originally compiled by 77 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, Japan and Korea, 1950-1951.. ND (ca 1971), no publisher, no location (Australia).

I have heard a "clean" original of this sung as "Down in the alley" or something similar, and will try to find it

In the meantime here is a more colourful version from the South East Nottinghamshire Venture Scout Song Book!!!

For the record, here are the lyrics Snuffy linked to:

Down the Dark Alley

The first time I saw her she was all dressed in white
All in white, all in white, she kept me up all night
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in pink
All in pink , all in pink, she made my fingers stink
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in blue
All in blue , all in blue, she showed me what to do
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in red
All in red, all in red, I shagged her 'till she bled
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in cream
All in cream, all in cream, I really made her scream
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in brown
All in brown, all in all in brown, I shagged her upside down
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in magenta
All in magenta, all in magenta, I came so hard I bent her
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in mauve
All in mauve, all in mauve, I sucked 'till my lips froze
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in green
All in green, all in green, I licked her pussy clean
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in beige
All in beige, all in beige, but not until I paid
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in grey
All in grey, all in grey, a little goes a very long way
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The next time I saw her she was all dressed in rose
All in rose, all in rose, she's cheap and God it shows
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

The last time I saw her she was all dressed in black
All in black, all in black, I want my money back
Down the dark alley where nobody goes

I found another version at this site:
http://www.odps.org/glossword/index.php?a=term&d=3&t=108
down in the valley / down the back alley
  1. This oddly unsympathetic little ditty has been sent in as the "Oak Park School Camp Song", but I'm sure the original title is "Down in the valley" etc:

The first time I met her I met her in pink,
All in pink all in pink.
    She made my finger stink.
Down in the valley where I laid her down.

The next time I met her I met her in white,
All in white all in white.
I shagged her all that night.
Down in the valley where I laid her down.

The next time I met her I met her in green,
All in green all in green.
    She said the doctors been.
Down in the valley where I laid her down.

The next time I met her I met her in blue,
All in blue all in blue.
She said the twins were due.
Down in the valley where I laid her down.

The next time I met her I met her in red,
All in red all in red.
She said the twins were dead.
Down in the valley where I laid her down.

The next time I met her I met her check,
All in check all in check.
    I'll break her fucking neck.
Down in the valley where I laid her down.

The next time I met her I met her in black,
All in black all in black.
    I want my money back.
Down in the valley where I laid her down.

  2. Version 2:

The first time I met her I met her in white.
All in white, all in white,
She was a fucking good sight.
Down a dark alley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, I met her in pink.
All in pink, all in pink,
    She made my fingers stink.
Down the back alley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, I met her in red.
All in red, all in red,
She was so good in bed
Down the back alley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, I met her in green,
All in green, all in green.
    She said 'The doctor's been'!
Down the back alley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her I met her in blue.
All in blue, all in blue,
    She said the baby's due.
Down the back alley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, I met her in fawn,
All in fawn, all in fawn,
    She said 'The baby's born'.
Down the back alley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her I met her in red.
All in red, all in red,
    She said 'The baby's dead'.
Down the back alley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, I met her in yellow,
All in yellow, all in yellow,
She said 'I've got another fella'.
Down the back alley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, I met her in CHECK.
All in check, all in check,
    I BROKE HER FUCKING NECK!
Down the back alley where nobody goes.

Hi, Moorley Man - I moved my message from today over to this thread. One reason for keeping two threads is that the song is known by various names - I gether that "Down the Dark Alley" is the more common one.
I moved my message from today over to this thread, so there's nothing recent on that thread to keep it on the Forum Menu.

I always thought that this was another of our Liverpool vulgar songs. Kids used to sing this on school coach trips when I was a kid, and the lyrics may have been slightly different to some pasted here. It was always 'down the back alley' not anything else.

Another line I haven't seen mentioned above, was the exceptionally vulgar 'all in green all in green, I filled full of cream' yeah, not exactly rhyming! Poetic licence?! The closest one to the Liverpudlian one is Joe Offer's version 2.

Hey, let me tell y'all a true story.

My husband was in a casino just two days ago, and a lout dressed in camo called a female pit boss a cunt. (A pit boss is one step higher than a dealer.) Then what happened?

1. The pit boss was relieved of her place and a different pit boss came on, so the insulted woman would not be involved in a confrontation.

2. Three burly, steel-eyed security people (one female, two male) escorted the player and his sniggering buddy out of the casino.

3. Their hotel room for that night was cancelled.

I'm telling you this just so you know that there are places in this world where the kind of nastiness in this song is not considered funny. In fact, 'abnormal and vicious' would be more like it.

==================
PS Do you really believe a swash-buckling, two-fisted fighter wrote a verse with 'mauve' in it? Give me a break.

Chris Griffiths

My favourite version is this one dripped to me, in episodes, by two delightfully mischievous, eleven year old female classmates during our exploratory flirtations at Hill Top Municipal Park, West Bromwich, in the 1958 summer holidays before moving on to different secondary schools in Wednesbury.

At the time, it seemed pretty steamy to us three youngsters - but it's certainly not as vulgar as some of the other more unpleasant versions remembered elsewhere in these lists.

Thank you Diane and Carol - I wonder whatever became of you wicked little girls?

The first time I met her she was all dressed in white,
All in white all in white,
She held me to her, tight,
Down the dark valley where no-body goes.

The next time I met her she was all dressed in fawn,
All in fawn all in fawn,
She drew me by the horn,
Down the dark valley where no-body goes.

The next time I met her she was all dressed in black,
All in black all in black,
I kissed her lovely crack,
Down the dark valley where no-body goes.

The next time I met her she was all dressed in green,
All in green all in green,
I filled her up with cream,
Down the dark valley where no-body goes.

The next time I met her she was all dressed in blue,
All in blue all in blue,
She said the Doctor had told her a baby was due,
Down the dark valley where no-body goes.

The next time I met her she was all dressed in red,
All in red all in red,
She said her mother insisted that we must be wed,
Down the dark valley where no-body goes.

The last time I met her I was all dressed in grey,
All in grey all in grey,
I left home, the very next day,
Ne'er again to venture, down the dark valley where no-body goes.

The closest thing I can think of as far as a tune goes is the folk song 'Maids when you're young never wed an old man'. Here's a verse

When we went to church
Hey ding dorum down
When we went to church X
Me being young X
When we went to church
he left me in the lurch
Maids when you're young never wed an old man.

excluding the 2 lines marked 'X'

John Mehlberg has a website somewhere with all of these bawdy pieces being sung. I have a vague recollection of singing this to him over the phone to go on the website. Have you tried Googling it?

Okay according to my indexes the tune is available in various volumes.

Ed Cray in The Erotic Muse gives an American version to the ubiquitous 'Vilikins' tune which is related to the American bawdy song 'Charlotte the Harlot'. He states though 'Originally from Great Britain' However the tune of the 'all in blue, all in blue, I said 'How do you do' bit is the same tune as I sing.

One of the earliest versions I have is in Nettleingham's 'Tommy's Tunes' from WWI. Unfortunately the way the tune is set out in harmonies (piano music) I haven't the skill to work out what the tune is. Above the score it states 'TUNE: Special' which I take to mean it has its own tune. It could be related to Vilikins but that's just a guess. It has 11 verses and a sort of epilogue that has the designated tune of 'Farmer Giles' which I do believe is the Vilikins tune.

Danny Brazil's version which is a different tune again can be heard on the triple CD from Musical Traditions website 'Down by the Old Riverside' The title is 'I met a girl all in white'. It's track 17 on the 3rd CD.
The same version is printed in Mike Yates' book 'Traveller's Joy' published by EFDSS in 2006. p75. with score.

Down in the valley(where nobody goes) * Some colors may not be in the correct order; * Some lyrics may not be correct:{Nikki Vokes}

The first time I saw her she was in white, all in white all in white, she was a pretty sight, down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I saw her she was in cream, all in cream all in cream, she was a pretty dream, down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I saw her she was in beige, all in beige all in beige, she just turned of age, down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I saw her she was in pink, all in pink all in pink, she made my fingers stink, down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I saw her she was in brown, all in brown all in brown, I got her knickers down, down in the valley where nobody goes.

Song #247 in the Fighter Pilots Song Book Undated (ca 1962). Internally attributed to the 523rd Tactical Fighter Squadron but the cover image shows the design of the 421st "Black Widows" TFS. Most likely the 421st just photocopied the everything and changed the cover image.

The first time I met her, she was all dressed in white.
All in white, all in white,
Her apron strings where tight
Down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, she was all dressed in red.
All in red, all in red,
I got her into bed
Down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, she was all dressed in black
All in black, all in black
I stuffed it up her crack
Down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, she was all dressed in grey
All in grey, all in grey,
She's in the family way
Down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, she was all dressed in green,
All in green, all in green.
Down where we won't be seen.
Down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, she was all dressed in blue.
All in blue, all in blue,
Her waist was swelling too
Down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, she was all dressed in brown
All in brown, all in brown
I pulled her knickers down
Down in the valley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, I met her in yellow,
All in yellow, all in yellow,
She had another fellow.
Down in the valley where nobody goes.

The first line is difficult. You go through all different colors:
All in pink, all in pink, she made my finger stink. That would have been a cadet song.

March 5, 2006. Transcribed from the singing of Steve Gardham. He was uncertain of the tune.

The Song of Colors

The first time I met her in blue
All in blue, all in blue
I fucked her through and through
Down in the valley where she followed me

Next time I met her, I met her in red
All in red, all in red
I took her maidenhead
Down in the valley where she followed me

Next time I met her, I met her in green
All in green, all in green
I fucked her on the green
Down in the valley where she followed me

Next time I met her, I met her in black
All in black, all in black
I fucked her on her back
Down in the valley where she followed me

Next time I met her, I met her in pink
All in pink, all in pink
Oh what a fucking stink
Down in the valley where she followed me.

March 21, 1960. From the singing of Jean Robertson, New Pitsligo (Scotland).

Listen here: https://egrove.olemiss.edu/kgreels_uk/70/

Song is at the 14:30 mark

Of course, this song shares many of the verses of "I knew a lady dressed in Red".

I wonder if this song has any value or validity today.Who would want to sing it, particularly to a mixed audience? Not all songs are worth perpetuating just because they exist, particularly as a historic example of a so-called bawdy song.Women tuning in to this thread must surely find it offensive and possibly threatening.
Nonetheless, bawdy songs have been studied and written about by some of the most notable folklorists of the last two centuries. Bawdy songs are some of the best examples of "folk process." I don't sing them myself, but I do find them interesting. So, we discuss and study them.

Down the Dark Alley where she followed Me

The first time I met her, she was all dress in white,
All in white, All in white, I said "I'm free tonight."
Dow the dark alley where she followed me.
Followed me! Followed me!
There were ham rolls, and jam rolls, and rissoles and wheels
Down the dark alley where she followed me.

Blue. She said, "I'll come with you etc

Red. I laid her on her bed etc

Black. I rolled her on her back.

Brown. I slipped her panties down.

First Time I Met Her, The (Down in the Valley, Down in the Dark Alley)

DESCRIPTION: "The first time I met her, she was all dressed in white, All in white (x2), She gave me such a fright, Down in the (valley/dark alley) where nobody goes." Each time we see her, she is in a different color, telling stages of her baby's birth and death

EARLIEST DATE: 1966 (Palmer)
KEYWORDS: colors clothes baby death
FOUND IN: Britain(England(West))

NOTES [85 words]: Palmer's version of this is rather explicit (interesting for a song sung by a group of 13-year-old girls), and the two versions cited by Roud are also from sources likely to produce rough versions -- and yet I seem to recall, somewhere in the past, running across a clean version. So I suspect this is a parody, even though I don't know what it is a parody of. It's clearly related to "Down in the Jungle" and "Down in the Valley Washing Her Clothes," but I rather suspect those aren'tt the original either. - RBW

The first time I met her, I met her in white
All in white, all in white, she gave me such a fright.
Chorus
Down in the dark alley where nobody goes.

The next time I met her, I met her in pink,
All in pink, all in pink, she gave off such a stink.

The next time I met her, I met her in brown,
All in brown, all in brown, I pulled her knickers down.

The next time I met her, I met her in green,
All in green, all in green, she said the doctor's been.

The next time I me her, I met her in blue,
All in blue, all in blue, she said the doctor's due.

The next time I met her, I met her in fawn,
All in fawn, all in fawn, she said the baby's born.

The next time I met her, I met her in red
All in red, all in red, she said the baby's dead.

The next time I met her, I met her in check,
All in check, all in check, I wrung her bloody neck.

THE FIRST TIME: sung by Hazel Dagless, Tina Haynes, Jacqueline
Bluck, Sandra Evans, Beverly Barker, Helena Romanowski, and
Jennifer Cox (all aged 13) of Birmingham; collected by Roy

88. DOWN IN THE VELLY.
Tune: Special.

[ Music ]

The first time I met her she was dress all in green,
        All in green,
        All in green,
        Prettiest girl I've ever seen,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was dressed all in grey
        All in grey,
        All in grey,
        Oh ! I'll ne'er forget that day
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The third time I met her she was dressed all in mauve,
        All in mauve,
        All in mauve.
Guess how my eyes did rove
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was dressed all in pink,
        All in pink,
        All in pink,
Took her to the open air rink
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was dressed all in brown,
        All in brown,
        All in brown,
On the grass did we sit down,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was dressed all in blue,
        All in blue,
        All in blue,
You should have seen us bill and coo
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was dress all in white,
        All in white,
        All in white.
My ! -- I had an awful night
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was dressed all in yellow,
        All in yellow,
        All in yellow,
        Kissed by some other fellow
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was dressed all in scarlet,
        All in scarlet,
        All in scarlet,
        Just like a common harlot,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was dressed all in red,
        All in red,
        All in red,
        Two little kiddies dead,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The last time I met her she was dressed all in black,
        All in black,
        All in black,
Out on the other fellow's track,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

Tune for Last Verse: "Farmer Giles."

Now this is the moral to all those who think:
Don't take a strange girl to an open-air rink;
Don't sit on the grass, as I've already said,
Or may all your toubles be on your own head.

Charlotte The Harlot

I was ridin' through Texas where the bullshit lies thick
I was ridin' through Texas with my hand on my prick,
When I suddenly saw her the girl I adore,
Twas Charlotte the Harlot the cowpuncher's whore.

CHORUS:

She's easy, she's greasy, she lives on the street
And, whenever you see her she's always on heat,
She'll do it for a dollar, come less or come more,
She's Charlotte the Harlot the cowpunchers whore.

She lay on the bed and was feeling quite fit,

When all of a sudden she felt like a shit,

So she up with the window and out with her arse
Pity help the poor bastard who happened to pass.

CHORUS: She's easy....

The poor old night watchman was pounding his beat,
Up and down, up and down, up in the street,
When he heard a great thunder, looked up in the sky,
And a bloody great turd hit him fair in the eye.

CHORUS: She's easy...

The poor old night watchman was blinded for life,
With seven screaming kids and a syphilitic wife
You'll see him on the corner of Market and Pitt
With a sign round his neck saying "Blinded by Shit”

CHORUS: She's easy...

The first time I met her she was all dressed in white,
All in white, all in white,
I had my finger in tight,
And she followed me down to the valley below

The next time I met her she was all dressed in pink,
All in pink, all in pink,
Oh how my finger did stink,
She followed me down to the valley below.

The next time I met her she was all dressed in puce,
All in peuce, all in puce,
I sucked her menstrual juice,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was all dressed in red,
All in red, all in red.
Oh, how her hymen bled,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was all dressed in mauve,
All in mauve, all in mauve,
Fucked by another cove,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

The next time I met her she was all dressed in black,
All in black, all in black,
I got my money back,
Down in the valley where she followed me.

I Met a Maid all in White

As sung by Danny Brazil, The Pelican, Gloucester 5 January 1966
(Springthyme 66.1.24). In: Shepheard, Peter. Folk Songs and Ballads
of the Brazil Family of Gloucester (1967).

I met a maid all in white,
I kep her out all night,
Down by the castle where she followed me.

I met a maid all in blue,
All in blue, all in blue,
I met a maid all in blue,
All in blue was she;
I met a maid all in blue,
I swep her Foggy Blew, [**]
Down by the castle where she followed me.

I met a maid all in black,
All in black, all in black,
I met a maid all in black,
All in black was she;
I met a maid all in black,
I layed her on her back,
Down by the castle where she followed me.

I met a maid all in pink,
All in pink, all in pink,
I met a maid all in pink,
All in pink was she;
I met a maid all in pink,
I played her tiddly wink,
Down by the castle where she followed me.

I met a maid all in red,
All in red, all in red,
I met a maid all in red,
All in red was she;
I met a maid all in red,
I layed her on the bed,
Down by the castle where she followed me.

Danny indicated that other verses could be made up:

I met a maid all in green,
Prettiest girl you’ve ever seen.

I met a maid all in yellow,
She was with another fellow.

** Foggy Blew: perhaps the same symbolism as Foggy Dew. Danny Brazil
clearly understood this to have sexual symbolism - as is clear,
in any case, from the rest of the text. It has been argued that,
in the popular song The Foggy Dew, the term would not originally
have had sexual symbolism but that Foggy Dew was a corruption of
bugaboo or bogulmaroo as in the earliest printed copy of the song.
This, of course, would only be true if the printed broadsheet of
the Fright'ned York-shire Damosel in the Pepys Ballads collection
(dated 1689) was indeed the original of the song. The various
regional words bugaboo, bogie, bogle, boggart are all related and
refer to a fearsome goblin - see the Scots dictionary entry for
bogle.

I Met a Girl All in White

1. I met a maid all in white,
All in white, all in white,
I met a maid all in white,
All in white was she.
I met a maid all in white,
I kept her out all night,
Down by the castle where she followed me.

The remaining stanzas follow the same pattern:

2. I met a maid all in blue,
I swept her foggy blue.

3. I met a girl all in black,
I laid her on her back.

4. I met a girl all in pink,
I played her tiddlywink.
