If you need a foreigner or two to countersign the citation and thus convince the chain of command, just call on us. When we visit Mary, we get a real bed, a magnificent breakfast, and all the feline company we can stand!

It is too bad that in our efforts to achieve egalitarianism, that the US doesn't have knighthoods and other honors, that could be bestowed on the 4th of July.

Mary, bitch or no bitch, is a prime candidate for something like the MAR or OAR, Member or Order of the American Republic, for all she does to promote folk singing and international relations.

Perhaps we can prevail upon the Governor of the State of Maine to set Mary's birthday aside as the SINSUL International Relations Day, and present her a LARGE framed certificate to this effect.

I'm a park ranger, we're all corrupted, otherwise the phrase would be going ranger instead of going postal. As for the five letter f-word, I usually use ass, guess I should've kept using it.

Mario, Tami came to us delightfully corrupted on her own. There may be a case for encouragement and blossoming into the current form, but I don't think we can blame Jacqui or Mary for planting the seed.

OK - this is what you've all been waiting for.

The premier of SINSULL's serenade to Seamus.

This was shot with a small, fairly basic still camera that allows for a little video. The lighting was crap and the camera doesn't hold still because I was laughing too much but I reckoned it was still worth looking at.

Octave mandolin. Ah, so!

Yeah, Charmion, I figured that you were either concentrating on someone who was singing, or possibly checking the progress of something that was swimming in your drink. . . .

We arrived home about an hour ago after staying with Susan A-R again in Montpelier on the northbound trip. We are both tired, but with a lot of good memories. Thanks to Mary for a great party.

The instrument Charmion is playing is an octave mandolin.

The French song I sang was "Les enfants de Pontoise", one of the grimmest hanging ballads I've ever heard. I also sang The Leatherwing Bat and River Driving. (I must buy Jeff Warner a beer the next time I'm in the Press Room for including that last one on his CD).

If I recall what Charmion said correctly, it's an octave mandolin. If it isn't, someone will hopefully correct me.

Looks like a great bash!

I just started looking at the pictures, but I gotta know right off. In the second picture, what is the instrument that Charmoin is playing (or, at least, gazing into the goblet over the fingerboard of)? Bouzouki? Mandolin on steroids? What?   Clicky.

Love the suit of armor in the corner!

Okay, back to looking at the pictures, then reading the rest of the thread. . . .

Ahh Jeri now that my Damn dog has slept through a frist rate home invvasion I figure it would serve him right to have Kendall show up unexpectedly. I leave the acceptance of future garden statuary to the goddess of first right who is already there. I figure she'll dispose of unacceptables in her own way. Whoops that might Be a bit of an open invitation... perhaps I should resever first right of refusal and hope the car is always packed to full on the way to Getaway.

I still want a transponder-- Maine and New Jersey what a wonderful combination. Neither one would ever be the same.

Perhaps we should keep it a secret.

Jeri, I have already been giving some serious thought to a visit. It wouldn't be this year, because the big obstacle is money. We're a long way away here in Oz.

What I have been hoping, what I would LOVE to do, would be to come for the 2008 Getaway. I would love to meet some of you people. With every Mudcatter I have met so far, it has felt like meeting an old friend. I think it would be the experience of a lifetime! So that is my goal. It totally depends on whether I can save the money. I will certainly be trying!

Just kidding. I meant to collect it. Maybe you could (once it dries out) just throw it in a plastic bag labeled "Jeri's Jerms" and stick it under the counter for next time?

Jenny, you should consider a visit, for the Getaway, the August 'Lobsterpalooza' or some other occasion. You sound like you'd fit in.

Mary, it wasn't a nun, was it? If it's a nun, I know who did it.

Yes Micca - a good word indeed! What a shame they are all so far away. You do realise that I had the pleasure of being Mary's Secret Santa this year? I had some elves do some rather naughty things for me, and as far as I know, she still doesn't know who they are.

So I think I'm quite capable of being pretty EVIL myself! *cackle cackle*.

You don't want a transporter. Kendall will use it to pop in unexpectedly and frighten Freddie, and your back yard would be full of plaster people.

Jeez...didn't even say thank you. THANK YOU!!! Roast beef is my favorite, the Ted S. (non-mudcatter) au jus was outta dis world, and I don't think anything could have been better... except for maybe the sharing of the hidden deserts. Like THAT wasn't intentional.

Sinsull, how do you manage to HAVE 236 glasses?!?

Charley, when I found it it just seemed to be the sort of prop you could work into something. And I'd run out of pirate stuff.

Actually, it was a fairly laid back evening (probably because we were all so comfortably full of a lovely meal!) and we even got to sleep at a more or less reasonable hour (and we really appreciated not having to cope with late night New Year's traffic and the expected freezing rain) and woke up in pleasant company after enough sleep to function through the day.

Not a bad way to start the year!

And the singing was excellent, as usual. (Although my voice wasn't 100% after last week's cold -- which I gave to Tom.) Really nice to have Charmion and Edmund be able to join the feast and festivities again!

Gotta go to work. Sigh.

Later,
Linn

Belated thank you to Char;ie and Judy. I love my mermaid. I don't know if you noticed but she is happily ensconced in a pot on a shelf in the kitchen.

I wish, I wish. KT and Ebbie, Dani and Tinker, Susan A-R and Janie, Carole and Andrew and Linda Goodman and Big Mick and Micca and Leadfingers and Morticia and and and. Then again I am always thrilled to have Kendall and Tom singing and playing in my living room. You too Jeri and all others. I suspect that when I am long gone the new owners on Bonny Bank will be awakened by strange music and some crazy woman going on about Peppersass.

Susan - thank you for the wine but I would have preferred your company especially since I cleaned out the "closet" so that you could sign the wall.

I found some more desserts I forgot to serve and lots of wine mostly opened.

But on the bright side, I have started 2007 with a job and Salsa free.
When the hell are they going to perfect that transporter?

Reminds me of the Press Room. Anyway, I had a good time, the food was GREAT, and it's always wonderful to spend time with friends.   I STILL need more sleep, but you know, I think I almost enjoy the morning-afters better than the night-befores.

Missed some folks. It was too bad everybody who wanted to be there couldn't make it, but only one person had to sleep in the living room.

I tried to stop everyone including Charlie from opening the Salsa jars but they insisted and I ended up with about 12 open jars. The one you unearthed was in the back and moved to the front when an abundance of wine necessitated rearranging the frig.
Fortunately no opened the kimchi with the bulkging lid, I have to remember to toss that before it explodes.

I do not keep many leftovers or out of date food. All fuzzy entrees were delivered by generous guests.

The last of the revellers left about ten minutes ago. I am taking a deep breath before tackling the dishes. This place is a mess!

The music was wonderful. Thank you all. Charlie and Judy did bolt at midnight. I half expected to see a pumpkin pulled by mice out front.

The weather has been miserable today but the sleet finally changed over to rain.

Drive carefully evereyone. And Happy New Year.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to speak with Dani, Carole, and whoever else called.

We're back safely home, an hour up the road to Richmond, Maine. We did a rather hasty departure after midnight to avoid the mess that iced up the roads later New year's morning. But it was a great party!

The roast beef dinner was superb (well, the roast was less rare than I like but very tasty), the wine/beer/harder stuff were all available in abundance, although this year I elected to finish the last two hours off with the more sedate diet gingerale.

And there was a wide variety of songs sung, including traditional holiday songs and some parodies of the same. Mary certainly can channel the late 19th century heart throb songs, including the unfortunately unforgettable "Poor Kitty Popcorn." I got a chance to revive "Pity the Downtrodden Landlord" which apparently people were unfamiliar with; it's tune is based on a music hall song that Linn had been leading, "She's More to Be Pitied Than Censored." BobBi regaled us with "The Fatal Glass of Beer." I tried out "The Tasmin Buster," another of Bob Watson's fine songs that I've recently fallen in love with; Jeri followed it with Watson's better known "Mollymauk." I also did my favorite Si Kahn song, appropriately titled "New Year's" which is dedicated to long-term organizers. JudyB did a fine rendition of Doug McCarthy's "Merlin." For some reason there were a number of cat songs, with an appropriate chorus of meows. Jacqui led a couple of Utah Phillips' songs, with Kendall doing his usual fine guitar accompaniment. Tami led "The Lewiston Factory Girl" which inspired several more texile industry songs. Edmund led a fine rendition of "Sam Hall the Chimney Sweep" and what was the title of his old French ballad? Tom led an Ewan MacColl favorite "The Thirty-Foot Trailor" and his more obscure eviction protest song "Hey, Ho, Cook & Roe." And in honor of Micca we did the "Gladiator" chorus. Charmion led several jigs and reels on her long-necked madolin (?). This is a mere sampling of what folks were singing over the four hours I was in residence. Lord knows how long they continued after our all too hasty departure (the small blue-green insulated chest is mine).

I'm glad I thought to bring fresh salsa, as an optional replacement for the gray and hairy salsa that Sinsull had been growing in her refrigerator since the last house party.

It was a lovely party, and it was fun to have folks from all over the world periodically phoning in.

Thank you, Mary, for hosting this one again.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble and JudyB

Thanks for the explanation of 'two bits'--I didn't know that. BTW our next TruBrit Newsletter is going to be about old English money so there'll be some explanations of the 'bobs, half crowns, tanners etc.....'

Jeri - I know what you mean about time differences and their challenges. In another life when I worked for corporate America, I managed a group of people who supported the sales office in Hawaii. There seemed to be a window of about 10 seconds a day when we could actually communicate with them......

Have a wonderful party at Mary's.......

Won't make it this time   Got in at 3 a.m. (thanks to Delta, and having slept in about 6 different beds in 10 days (alas, not as much fun as it sounds)with WAY too many Reids (lots of fun, but exhausting.) I'm curling up with the cat. May sneak out and see the Woodchucks though.

I did come home to find Edmund and Charmion pretty comfortably ensconced with the cat on the futon (although somewhat concerned about my whereabouts) and have sent them on their way after a lovely breakfast.

I'll be thinking of you all tonight. (I think there'll be a song challenge soon re. the "Delta Blues" )

Humph. These chickens are bantams (half size chickens) and mostly free-range; hardly worth the effort to pluck, there would be so little meat. Having said that, anyone who takes the extra 4 really handsome roosters is the new owner and free to make that decision. I call dibs on the best feathers!

The alpha rooster Airlie and the heir apparent Calico will remain here, along with Lil' Bit the mille fleur dowager queen, her two daughters Spice and Hawk, and three young granddaughters, who provide eggs and garden insect control.

By the bye: Truly free-range chickens can be quite tough due to superior muscle development. We haven't tried any of ours for meat. Zucchini might find its way into Kendall's and Jacqui's house without warning. :)

Remember, Kendall thinks I'm timid. Don't frighten me off. ;)

Pieces o' eight from the Spanish dollars was my best guess above. But I didn't know anyone referred to the "pieces" as "bits."

But the quarters that we gave 'em was to sink them in the tide..."

Two Bits: (from answers.com)
United States

"... a holdover from colonial America, when Spanish dollars ... were deemed equivalent in value to a U.S. dollar. To provide smaller denominations, they were cut into eighths, or "bits". Thus, twenty-five cents was dubbed "two bits," as it was a quarter of a Spanish dollar. Correspondingly, the terms "four bits" and "six bits" referred to fifty and seventy-five cents, respectively.

Because there was no one-bit coin, a dime (10 ¢) was sometimes called a short bit and 15c a long bit. For example, "Six-Bits Blues" by Langston Hughes included the following couplet: Gimme six bits' worth o'ticket/On a train that runs somewhere…."

By the way, Kendall, it's cold and slippery and snowing steadily here. The chickens refuse to have anything to do with their chickensitter, Mrs. W. Coyote, or her good friends young Ms Weasel and Mr. Jeremy Fisher. And they thought they'd enjoy the ride to S. Portland, but when I read them the post about chicken recipes, that was the end of that! So we'll be staying here for New Year's.

However, if we drive down during August, fellow mudcatters in attendance might return to their cars the next morning to find 'em filled with zucchinis and our extra roosters. Be afraid. Be very afraid...ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Yours truly,

meek maeve

Well, here in Oz, we are actually 16 hours ahead of Mudcat time, which means that midnight here will be 8am Mudcat on THE DAY BEFORE - the 31st. I'd ring somebody at 8am on the 31st if I knew any phone numbers - probably just as well I don't ;-)

On the other hand if anyone from the US were to ring me at midnight their time, I would have moved on to 4pm the next day, and there's an outside chance I might be up by then - well I do like to party!

We're 11 hours ahead of the UK, so our midnight will be their 1pm on the 31st, and their midnight will be our 11am on the 1st. Good chance I'll still be in bed then.

Actually we're going out to a friends' place and we're going to get a tram in to somewhere near the city where we can see the fireworks. I was looking at a preview last night where they were trying out some of the lighting they always do on the Harbour Bridge. It's affectionately known as "the coathanger", and I saw a lit-up coathanger on the side of it. They've forecast rain but we won't let a little bit of that slow us down.

Wish I could be a fly on the wall at your party, Mary! So - DID you let the snowman in?

TRU-B, MMario is only right about the time difference if we're being serious. Since it would be rude to call Micca at 5 AM, and Mary is not rude, so it's not 5 AM. I'm actually quite good at time zones. I once tried to make a work-related phone call to Hawaii from Korea on a Monday. They're an hour behind... not really. Hawaii is actually 25 hours behind S. Korea, and no one's there to answer the phone on Sunday. And then there's the complicated task of asking an Air Force pilot what time it is. Preliminary answer: "Do you want Eastern Standard, local or Zulu (GMT)?"

...but I digress.

Maybe you could mess with your clocks, convince your guests it's later than they think, and when they go to bed, sneak over to Mary's?

Well - I was regretting missing the party before I read this thread.....now I KNOW I should be there.........but probably not unless for an hour at the end after dinner.

Jeri, MMmario is right -- UK is five hours AHEAD. MMario - good thing someone gets the time difference between here and the UK ..... it is a bit shocking to hear the phone ring at some wierd time (= in my imagination, SOMEBODY DIED OR WHY ARE YOU CALLING SO LATE.....!!!!!!!????)...

I have never understood how two bits could be a quarter -- two bits of what I ask myself? This country can be very complicated!

Mary - did you let the snowman in?

Everyone make a mental note not to sit too near to Mr. Finn when he is singing shanties or if so, vet the choice of song very very carefully ...............'next to and below him??' - the mind boggles.

Happy New Year everyone from TRUBRIT who is still officially on holiday until January 2 (British visitors still here til the first) but missing the mudcat so stole a minute to check in ...... think of what I might have missed if I hadn't done so!!!!!!!

Sorry Mary, I may have lost my mind, you may be a maiden lady. I will not ask you to prove anything either way. So why's that snowman across the street knocking at the door?
LOL

Barry! Have you lost your mind! 2-bit whore? I am a maiden lady and I dare you to disprove it!
Melinda,
6PM sit down dinner followed by music. Breakfast depends on who is willing to cook but someone usually produces scrambled eggs, toast and occasionally bacon.
Mudcatters worldwide are welcome.

Hi Melinda & welcome

There are a few here (I'm in southern NH) from the Albany area & many of us attend the Old Songs Festival which is in your neck of the woods & we do get to meet each other in person there & at other festivals too. It's been a few years for me & I do miss it.

Sinsull's a 2 bit whore but she's our 2 bit whore & pretty much loved by all. Aside from monthly sings she also hosts house concerts. Some of her performers are mudcatters (that's us) & some are not but they're all worth seeing & hearing. She also posts info on those concerts here.

You could, if you wanted to, post your self as as a newbie & meet the animals or just hang about & get to know us better as you go. You could also check out the site & find out where other members are from & who here comes from around your way.
You could also ask in a post for any folk music happenings in your area & see what up.

Barry

Melinda......Feel free to join and join in. We get hammered at times for beink "clique-ish" but we ain't. Some of us have been here 8 or 9 years or longer and this place itself feels like home so private parties like Sins happenings are often posted just as Judy said. There may not be much in your area but sometimes we enjoy the vicarious party as well!!! I'm in Ohio and I love hearing about Sins' parties.........a bit too far for this ol' dog to make it though.

Hi Melinda -

SINSULL has been having song circles at her house in South Portland, Maine, for a couple of years now, so we sort of assume everyone knows where it's at - sorry!

My understanding is that SINSULL quite sensibly doesn't want to post her address and phone number where they'll become available to every telemarketer and spam generator this side of Jupiter, so she prefers that potential new attendees PM her (shorthand for "send a Personal Message") for details - if you're interested, it's easy (and free) to join Mudcat, and then you could send her a message and get the details.

Hope that clarifies things a bit.

JudyB

I'm a little, or a lot, new to this forum, and I'm not sure what this thread is about. What/where/who is Sinsull's? If this is a public event, where is there more information? If it's a private party, how come it's on this forum?

Thanks,
melinda in Albany

Alice usually pours -- but only on items on the floor.

Hmmm...that gives me another idea for a Christmas gift. And I don't mean a lifetime supply a DooDoo VooDoo!

Actually I did invite several people who are regulars at the Song Circles. Once I knew how many were definites, both yes and no, I had a handle on a seating plan. It will be the usual chaos. Seamus and Clancy will be in attendance and possibly Asher later.
Alice will pour.

Charley,
Consider yourself uninvited.
Anyone remember that great old movie called The Uninvited? Haunted house on a cliff, tortured young girl, balmy psychic. Great stuff.

What do we do with the herring's head?
Oh, what do we do with the herring's head?
Herring's head, loaves of bread,
We'll stuff 'em into SINSULL'S bed!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I like pickled herring
I like picled onions
Pickled eggs can be alright,
But they give you gas in the middle of the night...

I probably need a bed. In this weather (ain't no such thing as global warming), I could pitch a tent. Well, if it weren't for the pet by-products.

Jeri,
Still in balmy Toronto, but not for long.

Linn won't bring a lot of pickled herring in sour cream sauce (unless there is a loud popular aclaim), but BG & 'Mudge at least need to eat some that evening.

Gotta have herring. There's a couple other New Year's traditions we adhere to, also, but won't inflict them on anyone. (They can even be accomplished at home when we're not there.)

Peter and Joanne said something about First Night commitments as did Fred and Julia.
This has been a strange year for a variety of reasons so no invitations went out. As always the thread announces the event. I just need a head count to set the table. It would be great to see Nor and Eli and Bobbie.
Sit down dinner. Cold antipasto followed by roast beef, roast potatoes, assorted veggies. Assorted sweets for dessert.

No need for buffet donations although I suspect Linn will inflict pickled herring on us.

We could use some wine, bread, and a lot of music.

I believe than Peter and Joanne (dorymates) are planning to attend.

BobBi Keppel was also interested but wasn't sure if she was invited.

Nor and Eli were not certain that they were invited either, and may have other plans by now.

But Judy and I are definately planning to come, eat, drink, and sing all night (we have a place to stay).

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
