On Thursday January 11th, 2007, at The Railway at Rodley, Calverley Bridge, LS13 1NR, and fortnightly thereafter, a singaround. Singers, musicians, audience all welcome, real ale, initially in the bar but if we get enough support we can use the separate dining room. A new initiative by the landlord Martin, former barman at The Abbey in Kirkstall, available on 0113-2576603 and on www.therailwayatrodley.co.uk.
Come and support us, and get it off to a good start.

Good news about a new singaround starting up, and all credit to Martin for the initiative.

But O what a shame it's on a Thursday, a night when folks are already spoilt for choice with several good, well-established clubs and sessions (Topic, Polaris, Half Moon, Black Swan, Brewer's Pride, Earby - to name but half a dozen within striking distance).
Is no alternative night of the week available?

From what I see, it's the weekends that are in dire need of revitalising as far as singarounds go - whatever happened to all the Saturday night folk clubs for instance?

I would agree with all that, but finding a night that suited everyone or clashed with no-one was never going to work, and Thursday was the night Martin wanted. However, if Doncaster is not too far away, then on Saturday 13th January 2007 at The Three Horseshoes, near the prison, there will be a new singaround starting, and that is planned as a weekly event. Something is better than nothing, too much is preferable to not enough.

I think the answer to a lack of folkie things happening at weekends could be a simple commercial one. Landlords have crowded pubs at the weekend and Thursday and other midweek times are often 'dog days' so, naturally, the Landlord would like to hold folkie stuff then - to fill his till.

Not that I am complaining, I just appreciate commercial need!

But another Saturday night venture is just starting at The Stanley Arms, Lee Moor Road, Stanley, Wakefield, on 6th and 20th January 2007, then every 1st and 3rd Saturday, 8.30. OK everybody, I do appreciate the commercial considerations; the world has changed I know!

Peter - I am also grateful for the other suggestions re weekends. Although sad to say Doncaster is not easily accessible from where I am, Stanley might be a little better. (PS - It would be good to keep in touch without having to take over "Mudcat space" with our two-way conversations! - would you be prepared to PM me your contact details perhaps?)

Of course this does also conflict with singeround at Pool in Wharfedale but seperate room idea sounds good for sufficient numbers as Pool suffers from Boozy bar noises.

This might seem so obvious as to not need clarification, but will the Railway at Rodley be strictly every fortnight, or will it fall on weeks ? and ? each month? Trouble with strictly fortnightly is that if you get out of kilter with it, it is impossible to guess when the next one will be - and Leeds is a long way from Ilkley Moor if it is the wrong night!

On the web site it is billed as a Bluegrass night.....?

If all goes well, and there's no reason to think it won't, then The Railway will be every fortnight. I don't like weeks ? and ? for the same reason. The bluegrass night is also fortnightly, and the plan is that we alternate with them. I am trusting that the landlord has given me the correct first night.

That's great. I'll come down. It'll be good cos if you do make it to the wrong night you'll get great music anyway. Mark on the banjo for instance. Storming!

Don't listen to the naysayers Peter. We could do with another folk night in Leeds. Pool, Bradford nights? pah! It's always better to have a night that's a lot nearer. Otherwise if you're clever you can get the train and jump off right outside the pub! Or even grab a narrow boat. I wouldn't recommend either personally.

Good news Peter, well done. I've often thought the Railway would be ideal for folk music. Perfect location. Shame about Thursday (it's actually me and napper at the Topic on the 11th as it happens) but I'm all in favour none-the-less. The more the merrier, and everything that gets people into the habit of going out to hear or play music is a GOOD thing.

It'll be a while before I can pop in, but it's on my list of Folk Places in Yorks To Go To On A Thursday Whenever I'm Free!

Martin was tremendously supportive of the Abbey Tuesday evening sessions during his time there and has already made a positive impact at the Railway. It's a friendly place and the beer has improved out of all recognition during recent months.

Given that Martin is keen and that Peter is more than adept at running a singaround, this should be a fine regular occasion. Do try and support it!

(By the way, Peter, Martin has a fine repetoire of monologues and doesn't need to much persuading to perform!)

I feel I must challenge the opening remarks made by the "Chairman" of the singaround last night when he said that arriving on the alternate thurdays, would mean "being SUBJECTED to Bluegrass music". As a regular listener to the excellent musicians who have been playing fiddle, banjo, guitar and accordian and singing fortnightly for many months at the Railway I can assure readers that they would ENJOY a range of celtic, traditional and contemporary music of a very high standard. As one of the aforesaid musicians has contributed musically to the Railway for more than 30 years, I do not like to hear his skills belittled in his own local.....

I apologise for offending the above guest. It was not my intention, merely my way of talking. The important fact is that there is live music every Thursday. Last night was a successful start, which we shall do our best to build upon, in the hope that we too can attract an audience in the way that the bluegrass musicians obviously do.

A fine start! Many familiar faces & some new. The music flowed nicely all evening and a jolly time was had by all.

I don't believe that the Doctor was being overly rude about the alternative Thursday sessions, merely pointing out that the next singaround would be two weeks hence rather than the following week. I do hope that relations between the two sessions can remain cordial!
