I'll be at home with the love of my life, probably both of us snuggled up and sleeping by the midnight hour. We have our favorite wine chilling and definitely plan to stay in tonight. We prefer a quiet evening at home to going out amongst the crowds on this particular night.

Too many miles of two-lane blacktop with too many drunks per mile between my house and anyplace a party might be happening. Maybe we'll do something tomorrow when the idjits are nursing their hangovers. Somebody we know always seems to opt for having an impromptu picking party on New Year's Day.

I always miss my mother-in-law on New Year's Day. She had a tradition of all of her children, their spouses, and their children going to her house for a big feast that day. It was always so lovely and she treated me, as her eldest's spouse, like a queen. She's been gone for too many years, now, but I still miss her. Love to you, Helene...we'll have a sip in your honour, tonight.

My wife and I will be going to watch night at the black Baptist church where we are members. Watch Night is a traditional celebration, remembering that night when slaves awaited the stroke of midnight the year that slavery was abolished. It's a very special night, with much music and celebrating. I'm going to be sitting with my wife, listening to the Men's Chorus sing. This is my 10th year with the Chorus, and the first time I've ever been there and not sung with them. But, this is New Year's Eve, too, and given the choice between spending it with a lot of guys (dear friends, even) or my wife, it's not hard to figure out what I'm going to do.

In the past few years a pretty low-key tradition has evolved at some friends' house. Everyone shows up in their PJs, eats Chinese food & plays games. We're now up to
something like 5 or 6 families, all of whom have kids, so it's a bit of a mob, but fun.
The multi-generational quality of the affair is nice, and since we're generally home by 1 or so, the new year doesn't start off *quite* so blearily as it might. This year my sweetie's twin girls are here along with my own three boys, and since their birthday is this week we're having a cake as well and counting our many blessings.

About the PJs, Desdemona... Let me guess... The participating families all live fairly near each other so driving is kept to a minimum, right? I can just imagine getting stopped at one of those random sobriety checkpoints the police are so fond of setting up this time of year and having to explain, "No, officer, I haven't been drinking and this is why I'm driving in my nightclothes...."

We do all live in the same town, but generally bring the pajamas along & change once we get there. That said, last year I drove home at 1.30am in my pjs (really just sweats & my "Teen Girl Squad"
t-shirt, but still...), and it did occur to me that I'd better pay particular attention to the speed limit!

Last night a good friend came over, and she and my wife and I just sat about snacking on crackers and smoked oysters and other nibbly stuff and talking. Nice quiet evening. At midnight we had a glass of red wine. Then we watch the tag-end of "Prairie Home Companion" on "Great Performances" on our local PBS affiliate. Then, our friend, who lives a couple blocks away walked home.

Today, a couple of long-time friends are coming over for lunch. They have an eighteen-year-old daughter who is turning into a very talented and accomplished ballerina. They'll be here in about twenty minutes, so I'd better get my rear in gear.

We tossed around ideas about what restaurant to eat at, and decided to be venturesome and drive a few minutes to an Indian place we hadn't been aware of until we skimmed the phone book. Very good food, with another full meal for two left to bring home. Then we bummed around, slipped into "something comfortable", and caught the Prarie Home Companion show.

My wife made a superb Indian vegetarian curry dish .... went over to some friends ... took my ukele, sang some songs all out of key, not everyone singing knew all the lyrics to the songs ... had a grand laugh ... swapped stories ... had a grand laugh .... brought in the New Year ... on the way home passed through a police road check ... didn't drink the whole evening ... got home .... turned on the TV, we watched a good music show on PBS.

And that was it. A good time was had by all.

I went to an early hockey game (Local AHL team) with friends and then we all went back to one person's house and watched movies and chatted the night away. First time in about 5 years I've been awake at midnight.
