Right here in Virginia, 2007 is two and two-thirds hours old. I'd wish you "nothing but happiness all the way through," but let's face the truth:

In even the best of times, the New Year loses its luster by February, is downright tarnished in June, and by October, most of us are looking forward to the next chance of a do-over.

So here's my wish for you:

That even in your darkest moments in 2007, you will have:
  • Friends to give you a shoulder to cry on,

  • Kitten pictures from the Internet, to make you laugh,

  • Good music that gets stuck in your head when you want it there, and new songs that are worth learning,

  • Beautiful sunsets and dew-covered spiderwebs that make you go: "Aaahhh!"

  • and that, 365 days from now
  • All of these things shine bright and clear in your memory.

I love you guys.

Ring it in, ring in the New Year,
Ring it in, ring in the New Year,
Bells are ringing, bells are ringing,
Bells are ringing, bells are ringing,
Peace and love, throughout the New Year, (!!!)
Peace and love, throughout the New Year,
Joy! Joy! Joy!
Joy! Joy! Joy!

The round we sing at the annual Tucson Friends of Traditional Music New Year's Eve contra dance.

Here we bring new water from the well so clear
For to worship God with, this happy New Year:

Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, the water and the wine;
The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.

Sing reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her toe,
Open you the West Door, and turn the Old Year go:

Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, etc.

Sing reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her chin,
Open you the East Door, and let the New Year in:

Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, etc.

Trad. Anon, arr. B Britten.
An explaination?

Happy New Year to everybody! Maybe with a 7 in the year, it'll be lucky for all of us.

Becky--

We do the same New Years round. In 4 groups, singing it through 3 times, then as each group finishes the last time, each one just sings "Joy, joy, joy"--until everybody is singing that. Then several of us go up the 3rd to end the song. Makes it even more joyous. Is that the way you do it?

Joy, health, love, and peace be all here in this place ...

May you all have the best of everything in 2007!

Post-hangover, of course. A 37 hour day including 22 hours of travelling, lost luggage, Indian meal and a fair bit of drink was my Year End to 2006. Hope there are some good films on telly this afternoon!

sian, west wales
