Maplins has remaindered (now down to 50 quid) some gadgets that let you use your house mains wiring (UK) to feed a PC up the network - you put a LAN cable in each end and one comes of fyour router and the ohter goes to the upstiars PC.

They only claim 14MBPS - but that is about twice a good internet connection and surely should be good enough to put my old W95 machine in a spare bedroom.

Has anyone tried one?

I don't trust the security of wireless, and it's going to be abit of a pain to run a network cable even though I have a shedfull of Cat4, and I'd have to buy crimpers and connectors anyway....

We have a pair. They work quite well. We have wireless but it's an old house with thick walls so reception isn't very good downstairs.

They are trying to flog this sort of stuff (on a larger scale than just inside one dwelling) as large scale ISP distribution gadgets over mains distribution networks too - but you have to remember that this stuff (especially at the higher thruput bandwidths) sprays RFI over an enormous band, often crippling or terminating many other radio services over wide areas.

They are trying it currently in Tasmania I believe.
