Subject: 'In the Year 2000...'
From: kadelbug@earthlink.net

Back in the days when I was in 4-H club (1960-something) we used to sing a song that went "What will we do in the Year 2000?"

All I can remember is "What will we wear in the year 2000?" "Spun glass hose and plastic undies..."

The tune was The Old Grey Mare

Anyone remember the rest of the words?

Thanks...Delbert Long Kadelbug@earthlink.net

WHAT'LL WE DO IN THE YEAR 2000?

1. What'll we eat in the year 2000?
What'll we eat in the year 2000?
What'll we eat in the year 2000,
Many long years from now?
Energy pills and protein capsules,
Energy pills and protein capsules,
Energy pills and protein capsules,
Many long years from now.

2. What'll we wear in the year 2000?
Spun glass hose and plastic undies.

3. How'll go in the year 2000?
Rocket ships and flying saucers.

4. What'll we see in the year 2000?
Silent films and talking popcorn.

5. How'll we live in the year 2000?
Cook by ear and sew by radar.

I sing this song in kindergarten in 1973. Of course the year 2000 seemed like make believe at that age. We might as well I’ve been “what will we on ten million years from now m…” As a 5 year old I had no concept I would actually live to see the year 2000. I often wonder if our teacher thought, “I’ll like see see 2000 and so will my students”. Anyway, I’m happy to have found this song - I think of it every now and then as I contemplated plans for 2030, etc. Yikes! I’m going to be around for a while yet. I might see 2050?!? Thanks for posting this song. I’m glad to have found it.

some time in my much younger days I counted forward to the year 2000 & realised I'd be 48!!!!!

Impossible for anyone to be that old.

A serious book with the title _The Year 2000: A Framework for Speculation on the Next Thirty-Three Years_ by Herman Kahn and Anthony J. Wiener, was published (of course) in 1967. A great variety of scenarios are presented -- _not_ including the breakup of the USSR. It might well be amusing to reread the whole thing, but I have not done so.

Wow, I suddenly remembered this song today and this page is the only trace I can find of it ever existing now!
My music teacher taught us this song and had us sing it between 1999 and 2000, then phased it out after that, obviously. Once we got into 2000 she'd always make some remark like "I guess they were wrong, huh guys?" after we were done and we'd all get a big laugh out of that. Glad to see others remember this and it's been around for so long.
