I have a problem. Suddenly the screen is so full when I'm in the chat I can't log off using the log off button. It's hidden somehow. How do I shrink the screen?

You've got quite few choices: close the chay window (the cross at the top right corner), minimise the box (the minus sign at the top right corner), reduce the size of the box (the square at the top right corner), use Alt + F5 to close the box.
Any of them work?

PS the square at the top right corner is between the minus and the cross. If the box is full size this should look like a square on top of a square.

Check at Start|Help, search for Keyboard shortcuts, and see if you can find a keyboard combination that will back you out?

One that might work is Alt-Tab which should step you through the open windows, possibly to the point where the logout button will show.

Alt-Esc steps through open windows in reverse order.

Ctl-F4 should close the active window in most programs that allow multiple windows open at the same time.

Theoretically, F6 should cycle you through all the "buttons" in an open Window, including any that are covered up, so if you poke repeatedly it should eventually highlight and show the logout button, in most programs if you haven't reset a bunch of options.

Or maybe I just don't get what the problem is since I haven't been to chat.

The /help command list says that you can type /logoff in the input box to log out, assuming the input box is still visible?

For anyone interested, Kendall said in chat that:

1. Problem is only in chat.
2. The display runs off the right of the screen on his monitor.
3. Buttons at the bottom of the chat screen and the input box both disappear (or are off-screen).

My most recent guess is that updates to WinXP changed the meanings of some of the security levels in his IE, so even though he's got the same selections, they apply more restrictive levels of permissions than with his old setup. Since chat seems to be entirely in jscript, and that's blocked with some default security levels, it may be a matter of scripting being blocked. (add lots of ?????...?)

Whether your browser allows use of java is sort of embedded into which security levels you set.

A start, while I see if I can find something more specific, would be to run Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Disk Cleanup.

The is supposed to clear out all applets not currently being used, so it would get rid of one that might have been corrupted somewhere along the way. It also clears old page downloads in temp space and such. It shouldn't clear cookies, unless they're expired ones.

I'm using IE7 which has all the same stuff but in different places, so I may have to go to "her" machine to remember what IE6 looks like. (I'm assuming IE6 is what you have.)

In IE - and should be the same for IE6 or IE7 - at Tools on the top menu, there's a "Manage Add-ons" button. When you click on it, it offers "enable/disable" or "search for."

If you click the enable/disable it should show you a list of all the "ActiveX" add-ons. You can take a look there for anything "strange" that might have gotten to you, and can enable/disable individual ones.

Note that there's a drop down roller at the top of the window that gives you four different lists of stuff to check.

Most of the stuff there will be "applets" that come with one or another of your programs, but a quick look gives some assurance that you haven't picked up something phony.

The real point of entry for java is in IE Tools|Internet Options, on the Security tab. Click the "Custom Settings" button, and scroll down to where you see "java" something. It's probably about half way down.

My setting is at "high security" but one of the options is "disable java" and if it's clicked it would prevent mudchat from doing much of anything, since the program appears to be mostly jscript.

Lots of people recommend turning off jscript except when you really need it but I haven't found any problems with letting IE use the default "secure" setting. With all the latest bells and whistles, a site that wants to use java should trigger a popup in IE that asks if you want to turn it on - temporarily, for the current site only, or full on (but that may also be a WinXP Firewall function that I'm seeing).

I gave up and took it to the computer clinic at Staples office supply.
My next move was going to be to kick it down the road for a mile or so.Jacqui didn't like that idea.

Business analysts are suggesting that with the pending appearance of Vista in quantity, lots of computer makers will be trying to dump existing inventory in order to make room for new models. Many of the ones that are expected to be offered at deep discounts should be fully capable of running Vista, unless you want all the "super features" (that most people will never figure out how to use anyway).

Possible a great time to dump the old and get a fresh start!

Well, he was a lot better than he has been before. At one time a few years back, he probably would have kicked the thing down the street. He was known to have done that to, I think, a toaster or a typewriter!

I think that he is beginning to mellow in his golden years.
