Subject: RE: Obit: Magnus Magnusson From: Cluin Date: 08 Jan 07 - 05:34 PM Knew of him from his many translations of Icelandic sagas: Njal's Saga, Laxdaela Saga, King Harald's Saga, The Vinland Sagas, along with Hermann Pálsson. Read those many years ago in the Penguin Classics, bought at the Uni bookstore. Studying Geology and reading old sagas instead of my Science textbooks, quaffing beer, sipping Irish Mist, listening to Mike Oldfield and debating the merits of Tolkien. Ah, memories... RIP, MM. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Magnus Magnusson From: Fliss Date: 09 Jan 07 - 09:04 AM Sounds a good selection of books to look for. Think I may have read The Vinland Sagas. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Magnus Magnusson From: GUEST,Bill the Collie Date: 10 Jan 07 - 06:58 AM A convivial gentleman was Magnus (the Magnificent to some of his pals). "The Icelandic Sagas" (first volume) from the Folio Society 1999 is a great place to start if you're looking for good English translations. Magnus edited it, wrote the introduction and prepared new translations of 3 on his own and, jointly in collaboration with Hermann Palsson , translating 3 others. The remaining 6 in the book are by Palsson (2 of which in collaboration with Paul Edwards). |
