From: GUEST Date: 08 Jan 07 - 02:06 PM For ease of use, moderation, being able to choose by section topics, etc. I really like Capercaillie's web forum It is a fan site forum. But it is so simple and easy to use and well moderated! However, I think their overall website sucks. Arlo's forums I like too, and they are a lot of fun. They've had a lot of troublemakers there over the years, but still keep chugging along merrily. Features here are similar to the Capercaille forums (I'm purty sure it's the same software, but haven't checked), but I think Arlo's has them beat for ease of use (like a button at the top of the screen for contacting a forum admin). People can post as guests. Those who wish to remain anon easily can, while still registering as a user, by selecting the option of hiding your online status. That means only you and the board administrators can see your identity. Traffic is too heavy at the Beeb forums for me. |

The owner gets mad if you talk about lyrics. I had my hand slapped for answering about a song, so I don't go there much anymore. If you are most interested in ITM instrumentals, it is fine. |

It's very specific about what it does. By chance, I met the guy who runs it last year when he came to do a seminar to the web developers in our company and I happened to flip through the first couple of pages of his book and see that he set up thesession. Interesting to chat to but he set it up for a very specific reason and polices it accordingly. Unlike Mudcat it is highly moderated because those are the rules. Fine site though. He's a very keen musical player when he's not developing websites and writing about dynamic sites and stuff and he said he'd drop in for a tune next time he's over in Yorkshire. |

But not much for folk lovers in the latter two if you don't take the view all music for/by folk is folk music. |

But it has a lot of problems: - a culture of anonymity even worse than this place (what the fuck are you all afraid of, not signing your posts with your real names?); - a somewhat prissy policy of censorship which goes far beyond the commercial requirements of the site; - a few posters whose self-indulgence screams "censor me" loudly enough to make the average reader want to hand the whole shebang over to the Taleban; - a plague of Celtic-wannabe American dickheads wanting translations of Engliush mottoes into Gaelic, which leads to deadly spiral as more and more of those requests are indexed by Google thereby sending more and more of the morons to Footstompin; - technical support people who neither fix problems nor respond to bug reports and don't even acknowledge who they are. |

There is a lot of good discussion and Dick is tolerant of everything except personal attacks and advertising. Everyone must register using their real name (and display that name, unless they have a good reason not to - in which case Dick will make an exception). Dick himself pops in quite frequently and it's fun to hear his views on everything from music to politics - and he is very outspoken. He makes no bones about the fact that his forum is not a democracy, it's a benign dictatorship, and it seems to function well. There's also a forum on www.tradmusic.com that is useful sometimes for information. There is nothing quite like Mudcat, though, despite its problems! I can't seem to stay away even if I don't post very much! |

From: Tootler Date: 08 Jan 07 - 06:23 PM I like concertina.net I have seen adverse criticism of the forum from time to time, but I have found it a helpful and friendly site with members being willing to give valuable advice to newcomers to the concertina like me. My other favourite is the Noteworthy Composer users forum which is one of the most courteous forums I have come across. At one time it was a good place to post original compositions, but it has tended over time to become a place where people post transcriptions of symphonies and other classical pieces - true these tend to stretch the capabilities of the program, but the variety of musical tastes that used to be represented has declined somewhat which is a pity. OTOH, the members are always very helpful if you have a problem even if it is only vaguely related to the software. One I do not like is uk.music.folk which I found cliquey and unfriendly. I'm afraid I upset them by telling them so. I am not saying all members were like that but too many were. |

But now it seems just as cliqueish as uk.music.folk, which is almost as cliquesh as Mudcat, but not quite as cliqueish as the Beeb forums. I hope that clears it up for everyone. |

Nick - it comes as no surprise that the guy that runs TheSession is both a decent and keen player, and a website developer. The way in which the site is 'policed' shows understanding of the music and clarity of purpose, and the site's stability, robustness and ease of use does credit to the owner's abilities in his "day-job" ! For me, the worst has to be the BBC board - inhabited by warring tribes of imbeciles and trainspotters and moderated by dolts. Those who want more moderation here, think on't and ponder! Thanks to all for the other suggested links, though - I shall look foward to exploring them. |

This site too offers the same friendship,there does seem however a stronger desire here for a few contributors to play devils advocate and try and score points if they upset the people trying to have a serious discussion.I can cope with that up to a point and then just lift my hat and retire.I enjoy listening to the opinions of others and sometimes a good point that is raised can change my point of view.That is what discussion is about. It is Alt.Binaries.Karaoke This is strictly a Midi forum with lyrics added. MP3s are not allowed. All copyrights are respected and strictly adhered to. There are some very knowledgable folks on there such as Alan Sharkis, Ron Tilden, Bunty Pritchard Jones, Dr. James Pitt-Payne, & Johan Komrij. They tend to have a fairly short period of real vitality. Brawling chaos works better. |

From: The Sandman Date: 10 Jan 07 - 10:23 AM it would be easy to say, that other forums are as good as the people that participate on them ,but this is not quite true. design of the forum is important,one very well designed forum is Jon Gindicks harmonica forum,there are video lessons for improvisation, video lessons on how to work with a metronome,[important for dance musicians].a beginners glossary,hamonica classroom with backing tapes,Tab convertor and theory room,and a repairing harmonicas section,this is in my opinion a well designed forum. concertina net,has a very good repair and very good history section,a very good links section[information to other sites]a useful whats on section,but I think the teaching section,is inferior to Gindicks harmonica forum.[just a personal opinion],. FOOTSTOMPING seems like a good forum,and it has one advantage,for people who wish to improve their playing technique[traditional style]in that Simon Thoumire is an excellent player and well qualified to advise people. www.dickmiles.com |
