Good luck with the new folk club Andy. Glad to see it will be traditionally orientated. The folk clubs in my area have mainly sixties songs and music. I do miss the trad songs.

Thanks for the goos wishes everyone, but I must own up. I am not actually running the club, just helping along the way.

It is the brainchild of Bob Russel. We are on the same wavelength though and the intention is to get away from what GRex laments in his post, i.e. 60's songs and music.

There is an undercurrent of interest in Folk on the Island as shown by sellouts to fairly frequent big name concerts. Bob and I just hope this will be reflected in attendance at the new venture.

Andy

Glad to here there will be folk on the island again.

Bit of a coincidence: We're bringing our Island Slices show to the Isle of Wight in a couple of weeks (this includes The Isle of Wight Hornpipe amongst 2 hours of trad and new songs, tunes and stories from the Channel Islands, Scilly, Orkney, Shetland, Arran, Farne, Man, Lundy, and others).

If anyone can get some fliers promoting the new club to us, we'll be happy to put them out at our three village hall gigs in Chale, 25th, Brading, 26th and Totland, 27th - which should bring a few folkies out of the wordwork.

Shame we can't come to the club this trip - though we'll certainly be visiting old haunts in Calbourne - my gran used to live in Winkle Street!

Please get in touch via our website:

Tom Napper Tom Bliss

(PS I'm playing Llantrisant on the 31st - I'll even do the IoW if you ask VERY nicely)!

Andy. Last time I was on the Island was about 1961 !

Rode in the "Round the Island" Cycle race. Used to be a dab hand on a bike in those days. Came 26th if I remember correctly, out of 120 starters.

Good luck with the club. See you at Miskin.

Well all the good wishes seem to have worked. We had 48 people in the room during the first half and still 35 at the end. A good selection of singers with an equally impressive variety of songs and music. Poems, stories, Fiddle, Concertinas and of course shanties and various songs.
Thanks again for good wishes, see some of you there one day.

Well done Bob.

Hey, it's our first Anniversary.

Yup, Downland Folk Club is one month old today!
Why not come along and celebrate with us?
We kick off about 8-15.

Have a look here for directions etc.

If you are a lurking Isle of Wight Mudcatter or just over the water on the North Island why not give it a try?

Would have loved to be there. The Sun Inn is a great pub. Many happy memories of summer evenings there years ago.

Will try to get across in March and look forward to seeing all the Islanders who head in the other direction o'er the water to the Gosport & Fareham Easter Festival on "the North Island" in April.

Andy (Mr. Miskin Man) -
Does this mean you are going to be around Hampshire on March 17th? I am planning on being in Alton that day for a George Gardiner gathering., probably with all the usual suspects. It is a Trad. Song Group meeting.

Sorry both, especially my old friend Tim. I go back to Wales next week and try and get my head around sorting Miskin at Easter Festival (I resist the urge for a blue clicky here)
I wont be back in the Hampshire/IOW area until I've packed it all away after!!
But please visit the Downland Folk Club ( Aaha a Blue Clickie ! )

We had another good night tonight and it looks good for the future.

Andy

I'm working on a more comprehensive answer, bt for the moment this link will at least show you where we are.
Downland FC Location

That strip of water is THE ONLY problem with living on the Island, but at the same time that is what makes it so special.

PM me if you are thinking of coming over. I won't be here for the next meeting though, a little matter of Miskin at Easter to sort out!

MGAS we can arrange for you to meet with me/us in Portsmouth for future Island Visit if you want. I've looked into ferry costs etc. and its a lot cheaper for a small group of folk to go than singles (think family type ticket) Also discounts available if form printed off website in advance. Route is Car Ferry (as foot passenger) Portsmouth to Fishbourne then lift from Miskinman or someone to club. NB Fishbourne is nearer to club than ordinary ferry which only goes Portsmouth to Ryde. Alternatively there would be a way from Southampton to that end of Island but thats further across mainland to start with for me and you too. Bit expensive to take vehicle across short-term.

Whoa !! Jillie's only got a little car.

I'm still looking at buses, taxis etc but the more you look the more complicated it gets as there are at least five different routes to the Island. On this side Yarmouth is ideal, with a direct bus to and from the Club. But that means the Lymington Ferry, fine if you are coming from that direction. Southampton - Cowes is quick and expensive on the Red Jet and slow and reasonable on the ferry. Beware they arrive in different parts of Cowes. Either way it's a bus to Newport and change. With me so far???

Annie's preferred route Portsmouth - Fishbourne only works if there is some gullible idiot over here to collect you (Me Me Me, please)
as they haven't seen fit to run the busses down there! Now we get to Ryde...I think I'll do that another day.
I hope as the club gets more settled in we can arrange lifts and stuff on a regular basis if required. Meanwhile just get in touch first and we will sort something.

Andy and Jillie

Calbourne used to get two busses a day if there was and R in the month and none after dark. Have things improved since then Andy?
Sat Hello to The Sun for me. I've sunk a good few pints in there over the years.

Hi Vectis,
what happened was...the horse that used to pull the tram decided on retirement on grounds of ill health, passive smoking he said it was from all them old steam trains. So they had to buy some o' them new fangled carts with engines in. Now they gone all modern, fancy buses and even a new Bus Station. I think it was an afterthought when they finished all those fancy clothes shops where there used to be a perfectly workable bus station.

More seriously..... I'm still working on a comprehensive guide to getting to and from Calbourne for the club.
Routes and times are okay but they are a bit secretive with the actual fares. I think I'm due for a breakthrough soon..

Loads a busses to Calbourne now tho'

One Newport - Yarmouth every 30 mins and a Newport - Freshwater once every hour.

They've had a big re-arrange of the buses over here and have a splendidly user friendly website, although doesn't show fares.

a href="http://www.islandbuses.info/">Island Buses

I have no connection with them, I just like a nice website..Oh did I mention mine..

Miskin at Easter

Tee Hee
