A small amount of acidity from the vinegar might well be pleasant in a bland beer as you say. It would have a similar effect to adding lime juice to lager or drinking Mexican beer with a slice of lemon.

I might well try it sometime...

I was watching "Daily Planet" on the Discovery Channel a few days ago and they reported on this study.

Apparently they added a few drops of balsamic vinegar to a glass of beer then had several people try it and compare it with a glass of the same beer without vinegar. Those who knew which glass contained the added vinegar preferred the beer without it by a large majority. Those who didn't know which glass contained the added balsamic vinegar preferred the taste WITH it added by an almost opposite majority.

The experiment was set to investigate the effect that foreknowledge of the added ingredient would have on taste preference.

So last night I poured myself a glass of Keith's and added a few drops of balsamic vinegar. I found I did indeed like the taste of it in my beer. I don't know if it improved it or not, but it did make a nice change and I'll probably do it again, especially with some of the blander tasting beers.

My suggestion: try it yourself and see if you don't like it.

p.s. I think it might actually have had a beneficial effect on that slightly bloated feeling you get after a beer or two as well.

Well, Mr Fox, I've enjoyed pints of Dog's Bollocks, and other 'rudely-named' ales myself. I just think the names probably appeal to a limited market of 'hardcore' ale drinkers (like me and presumably you), and they may be alienating a lot of other people who might be otherwise interested in trying them. It just seems sometimes that the brewers of some ales are deliberately trying to stop people drinking their ales, which seems odd.

To me the name doesn't matter if the ale tastes good. What's wrong with names like Bitter, Best Bitter, Mild, etc.? It just seems brewers are desperate to think or more and more daft names these days. I think I'm probably just being a Grumpy Old Man though! :-)

I used to frequently frequent a nearby pub were the phrase 'The customer is always right'
did not apply.
A fellow drinker had the temerity to ask the barman to change his pint because the beer was 'cloudy'.
The barman said "there is nowt wrong with that beer,its crystal clear". Then as an
after thought he added " Its the glass,its filthy !"

Tonight at Faldingworth Live I had an 'Old Speckled Hen' and thoroughly enjoyed it...Went for a second bottle and it was sold out so I was left with a choice of 'Pedigree' or 'Piddlehole' and chose the latter....sadly I believe it had been passed by the management.

Talking of beer names, I sometimes wonder how some of the more rude or daft ones are supposed to help sell the ale. Yes, calling a beer 'Old Horse Piss' or 'Old Wanker's Delight' may get the punters' attention, but you won't get many ordering it at the bar :-)

The Rebellion Brewery in Marlow Bottom has some good beer names and tastes(we really enjoyed their Roasted Nuts at Christmas - try Google for their website), and so did the brewery that supplied beer for last year's Alcester in Arden festival (including For Fox's Sake).

Oh Be Joyful and Tanglefoot/Tangleleg are also old slang, usually for hard (and probably bootleg) liquor. At least as far back as the Civil War. Had not seen them appropriated for beer labels before, though.

I used to collect beer mats years ago. Believe it or not there is a name for this - 'tegestology' I think it's called. And the presidents of the Tegestology Society were none other than Morecambe & Wise. I threw all the beer mats out some years ago and now wish I hadn't!

Big fan of the Black Sheep Brewery (as I was of Theakstons before that) but have never tried the Monty Python Holy Grail...in fact never heard of it, though their Riggwelters I love...potent stuff, seemingly beyond its 5.9!

The last one which was surprising good for the price; it was one of the "cheap" beer deals at the Brewer's Retail here in Ontario last year. Can't find it here any more unfortunately.
