Anyone remember the Settlers who sang the The Lightening Tree theme of Follyfoot in the early 1970's, what ever happened to them ?

They made some very good "pop-folk" records in the 1960s but never really broke through like the Seekers (with whom they were often compared, havinga female vocalist and being "folky"). I like them, anyway (and I like the Seekers too!)

May not be "cool" in the folk world but who gives a toss - they were good! (IMO of course)

I always liked them and was deeply in love with Cindy Kent.

A music shop in Glasgow was asked to order a L/H Martin tenor guitar for the left-handed tenor guitar player who paid a deposit on what was a special order. By the time it arrived the group had broken up so the shop had it on sale in the window with the price, which started at about £500 IIRC, coming down by about £100 a year. I wonder if they ever sold it. How many left-handed tenor guitarists are there after all?

Guitars are ambidextrous!!, all you do is turn the nuts and saddle around i.e. if the gooves are made to fit then restring.

Thanks for the porridge joke - the old ones are always the best!
Forgot to say that the L/H tenor guitar had a pickup installed with tone & vlume controls on the left segment of the lower bout. The pick-guard was also set up for L/H playing - not much use to a R/H player unless there was a R/H Jimi Hendrix type who had always wanted an electric Martin tenor guitar!

The shop was called Biggars IIRC.

In the late 70s John Fyfe (banjo) ran The Hope Inn at Sedgefield, County Durham. He was always friendly and gave my 2nd wife and I a bottle of Champagne for our wedding. He played at a charity concert I compered using a 4 string Martin copy guitar. Last I heard he was running The Sun Inn at Wackerfield also in County Durham.
That's my twopennorth for what it's worth.

I was at college in Birmingham with John and Mick...that would put them in their 60s now. Cindy definitely went into Sunday morning religious broadcasts, but don't know what happened to the fellows. They left before completing their teaching certificates in order to take up a recording contract...wonder if they ever ended up in teaching after all

i seem to remember that John eventually ran something like a country or health type club in the early 80's. To the best of my knowledge he wasn't singing & I seem to remember him saying that he felt too nervous to do so which is a shame because he had a fantastic voice.

Hi - let me tell you what happened to us!
Sadly Mike Jones died 2 years ago from throat cancer.
Geoff Srodzinski married a Dutch girl and lives in Holland where he's a piano tuner and does gigs.
John Fyffe did indeed move into the public house business, now owning an hotel - The Dunstanburgh Castle Hotel - which is lovely - and he still gigs.
I'm now an ordained Anglican Priest - at a church in North London - and still broadcast, mainly for Premier Christian Radio. Tune into my late-night phone-in show 11pm to 1am - SKY 0123 Freeview 725 or Premier National Digital.

Yes, I am still around, tuning, repairing, and renovating pianos in Holland, where I live with my Dutch wife Gerry. It may seem like a pretty dull way to earn a living, but every piano is different, just like the owners, the vast majority of whom are very pleasant people.
I see John (Fyffe) regularly enough - desptie the water in between - and I do play with him both here in Holland and on visits to good old Blighty. Contacts with Cindy (Kent) are frequent, but mostly on a she/he-mail basis, or over the phone. We got together to write a song for poor old Mike (Jones), who died a few years ago after a long illness. The song is called "Song For Mike", and it is included on my first solo album "I'd Like.......Geoffrey Srodzinski." Catchy title, what? Want a copy? Send a e-mail to [e-mail], and I will get back to you. I am still in touch with my old flat mate Tony Hooper (of Strawbs' fame).

i got a vynil record of the settlers at a boot sale recently and was very pleased with it.i have listened to cindy on premier sometimes.she seems very fond of tamborines on record.
being a humble soul,i dont think i,ve heard her play settlers on her shows on radio.

John Fyffe alive and well and living not far from me! I am in Barnard Castle.
He went on to buy and run a successful hotel in Northumberland.
Now retired and enjoying life!

funnily enough, in the mid 80's a colleague told me that when he went to Hereford Hospital for a tennis elbow cortizone injection he recognised the doctor but took a while to place her. She confirmed it, he said.

Despite that the cortizine treatment (as per usual) was not an unmitigate success. It did not bring Express Reilief

Happy memories here. Started reminiscing when we heard a recording of Early Morning Rain (not Settlers) over a posh breakfast on my 70th birthday. That kickstarted much googling on The Settlers. They were fabulous. My husband booked them for a YMCA gig around 1964. That started us following them around and enjoying their records. Last saw Cindy at a CRE exhibion

Actually, the settlers are doing a gig in Sheerness on 10th December 2016. I believe lightening tree will be sung. May be the last time to see them together. John still has an amazing voice.

It the late 70s (I think) John was giving young talent a chance to get out there and had, on this particular evening, booked the Brown Jug in Durham. Unfortunately, the youngster didn't show up so John took the stage with his 4 and 8 string guitars (no mic, PA, or amps) and filled the room with his music. His rendition of American Pie was, simply amazing. I also used to see him regularly when I visited my parents in Esher ley when he had the Sun Inn. Very happy memories!

John had a folk night on friday evenings in the pub in Sedgefield, he also would sing at charity events for Hartlepool workshops for the blind. He had an amazing voice and would sing Amazing Grace ... acapello.

I met Cindy Kent (and Paul & Fiona Jones) at a Christian exhibition ( we went to support a friend who had a book to plug). Our fiend had worked on a radio show with them. Paul sang and Cindy interviewed our friend a jolly now grey lady vicar.
