Hi, Joe, after some serious net research, I managed to unearth a couple of missing verses.

Well, I'm still waiting for a song from Donna Rebeck. If she can't come up with a decent response song, it's 40-to-life for her in the Big House.
I think the link I put in was just for songs in our own database, and the link expired when a new version of the database came out. Search the database for @camp or @kids for camp songs. Prairie Home Companion had a camp songbook on its web site for quite some time after its 7/4/97 camp song special, but I think it's not there any more. Most of the songs on that site are right here in our database.

Aw, darn, I thought this was going to be a version of the song from the wife's point of view. I've always wondered if that "helluva yank" was premeditated.
Click here for the version of the song that's in the database. It's one song that's a bit hard to find because there are so many versions. In Racine, Wisconsin, the song was known as "Johnny Verbeck." I didn't come across "Dunderbeck" until I went out into the Big Wide World to seek my fortune. When you don't find a song by a proper name that may not be spelled the way you think, try a distinctive word like sausage* or a phrase in square brackets like [be so mean] or several words like cats rats machine without brackets since they are not found as an exact phrase.

Must only work for old-fogey-cyber-klutzes Sandy. Kids always like Dunderbeck and when I saw this, I thought I'd check out what verses were there. Typed in Dunderbeck and clicked on search...Ta-Daa.

Maybe the computer gods have mercy on the cyber challenged.

Jeez, I dunno. I just go up there to the blue box and type DUNDERBECK into the blank space, click on "search" and then on the title when it appears. Pretty soon the song is there, an explanation of the source at the bottom of the page, and a line to click on to hear the tune.

Works for me, and I'm an old-fogey-cyber-klutz!

Susan--you've got the same last verse that I knew but different name. Maybe?????you have more verses coming..when you're trying to sleep! I tried the database (my curiosity is out of control) and the other sites it suggested and didn't find verses....but, Sandy--am fairly new at this so may have done something wrong? Shep, can I suggest that you change the name of the thread to Dunderbeck?

I used to know the song but learned it as "Dunderbeck". Best I remember......"Oh Dunderbeck, oh Dunderbeck, how could you be so mean; grounding up those sausages in that ?????? machine; now all the cats and long-tailed rats will never more be seen; for they'll all be ground to sausages in Dunderbeck's machine." Not sure of the spelling! Lost the verses a looong time ago. Good luck.

My dad used to sing to us when we were children. One of the songs he used to sing had the following lyrics and I really would like to locate it. It seemed like an Irish or Scottish tune (although it seems to have some early German terms).

"There came a man to our town, his name was Donna Rebeck
He was very fond of sour kraut, of sausages and speck
Then one day he invented a machine, that ground up dogs and cats
It ground them into sausages, now what do you think of that?

Chorus: Oh Mr Donna Rebeck, what makes you be so mean
Some day you will be sorry for inventin' that machine
No dogs or cats or long tail rats, no longer will be seen...
They'll all be ground up in sausages ... in Donna Rebecks machine!
