Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Barbara Date: 29 Mar 99 - 02:32 PM Me, Joe? Nah. Would I do something like that? But I notice I left the word 'her' out of the second line; if you would be so good as to put it in. Welcome home. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Mar 99 - 03:29 AM Aw, c'mon, Barbara! You made those verses up, didn't you? there's pretty good, I'll grant you that. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: Lyr Add: Johnnie Verbeck (more verses)^^ From: Barbara Date: 24 Mar 99 - 08:49 PM Hi, Joe, after some serious net research, I managed to unearth a couple of missing verses. Blessings, Barbara
Now Donna Rebeck was Johnnys wife, the fairest ever seen,
On day the thing got busted, the darn thing wouldn't go,
Donna woke with a start to see Johnny depart through the jaws of the machine |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Mar 99 - 08:07 PM Here 'tis: A Prairie Home Companion Camp Songbook. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Joe Offer, still waiting for Donna's confession Date: 24 Mar 99 - 08:03 PM Well, I'm still waiting for a song from Donna Rebeck. If she can't come up with a decent response song, it's 40-to-life for her in the Big House. I think the link I put in was just for songs in our own database, and the link expired when a new version of the database came out. Search the database for @camp or @kids for camp songs. Prairie Home Companion had a camp songbook on its web site for quite some time after its 7/4/97 camp song special, but I think it's not there any more. Most of the songs on that site are right here in our database. -Joe Offer, back at the library- |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Sandy Paton Date: 23 Mar 99 - 11:49 PM HURRY HOME, JOE! WE'RE LOST WITHOUT YOU! Cyberklutz #1 |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Night Owl Date: 22 Mar 99 - 12:54 PM I followed the links you gave for camp songs in the old thread. Can't get through to it. What was it? (Click here, sez Joe Offer) |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Mar 99 - 03:26 PM Aw, darn, I thought this was going to be a version of the song from the wife's point of view. I've always wondered if that "helluva yank" was premeditated. Click here for the version of the song that's in the database. It's one song that's a bit hard to find because there are so many versions. In Racine, Wisconsin, the song was known as "Johnny Verbeck." I didn't come across "Dunderbeck" until I went out into the Big Wide World to seek my fortune. Click here for a previous discussion of the song and its versions. -Joe Offer, whose time on the library computer is now up. Darn- |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Susan of DT Date: 21 Mar 99 - 12:11 PM When you don't find a song by a proper name that may not be spelled the way you think, try a distinctive word like sausage* or a phrase in square brackets like [be so mean] or several words like cats rats machine without brackets since they are not found as an exact phrase. |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Susan A-R Date: 21 Mar 99 - 11:59 AM Glad you didn't do it in the first place though, or I wouldn't have been reminded of that great/awful song. Thanks Susan (the significantly spelling-impaired queen herself) |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Night Owl Date: 21 Mar 99 - 10:57 AM duh.....er.....umm.......oh!........are you supposed to click on the name of the song after you find it????????? THANKS for the info Sandy, I found it! (Another old-fogey cyberklutz.) |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Sandy Paton Date: 21 Mar 99 - 10:45 AM Maybe Joe Offer will get home in time to explain this one to us. I just went through the drill again and got to dear old Dunderbeck, no problem! Anyone able to explain this? Have we all checked our spelling? Klutz, his own self |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Mar 99 - 08:39 AM Must only work for old-fogey-cyber-klutzes Sandy. Kids always like Dunderbeck and when I saw this, I thought I'd check out what verses were there. Typed in Dunderbeck and clicked on search...Ta-Daa. Maybe the computer gods have mercy on the cyber challenged. catspaw |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Sandy Paton Date: 21 Mar 99 - 01:13 AM Jeez, I dunno. I just go up there to the blue box and type DUNDERBECK into the blank space, click on "search" and then on the title when it appears. Pretty soon the song is there, an explanation of the source at the bottom of the page, and a line to click on to hear the tune. Works for me, and I'm an old-fogey-cyber-klutz! Sandy |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Night Owl Date: 21 Mar 99 - 12:59 AM Susan--you've got the same last verse that I knew but different name. Maybe?????you have more verses coming..when you're trying to sleep! I tried the database (my curiosity is out of control) and the other sites it suggested and didn't find verses....but, Sandy--am fairly new at this so may have done something wrong? Shep, can I suggest that you change the name of the thread to Dunderbeck? |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Sandy Paton Date: 20 Mar 99 - 11:36 PM Just type [dunderbeck] into the space up there in the upper right corner where it says "search the DigiTrad database" and you'll find your song. Welcome to the Mudcat Cafe, Shep. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Susan A-R Date: 20 Mar 99 - 11:33 PM I learned it "Johnny Rebeck" and the last verse that I remember is One day the thing was busted, the darned thing wouldn't go So Johnny REbeck he climbed inside to see what made it so His wife she had a nightmare a walkin' in her sleep She gave the crank an awful yank and Johnny Rebeck was meat. Hmmm, guess my mind is a shambles. or is that what is meant by carnal knowledge? Sorry, it's pretty late, for me, and I get . . . well, you see a modest example above. Susan |
Subject: RE: Donna Rebeck From: Night Owl Date: 20 Mar 99 - 11:21 PM I used to know the song but learned it as "Dunderbeck". Best I remember......"Oh Dunderbeck, oh Dunderbeck, how could you be so mean; grounding up those sausages in that ?????? machine; now all the cats and long-tailed rats will never more be seen; for they'll all be ground to sausages in Dunderbeck's machine." Not sure of the spelling! Lost the verses a looong time ago. Good luck. |
Subject: Donna Rebeck From: Shep Date: 20 Mar 99 - 11:02 PM My dad used to sing to us when we were children. One of the songs he used to sing had the following lyrics and I really would like to locate it. It seemed like an Irish or Scottish tune (although it seems to have some early German terms). "There came a man to our town, his name was Donna Rebeck He was very fond of sour kraut, of sausages and speck Then one day he invented a machine, that ground up dogs and cats It ground them into sausages, now what do you think of that? Chorus: Oh Mr Donna Rebeck, what makes you be so mean Some day you will be sorry for inventin' that machine No dogs or cats or long tail rats, no longer will be seen... They'll all be ground up in sausages ... in Donna Rebecks machine!
It has at least one other verse. Have you heard of such a song or came across it. If so, I would love the words or even to find it on your pages. Thanks again for such great music. Sincerely, Threads about this song: |
