If anybody in the Okanagan has some vinyl they want to dispose of, let me know. The Peach City Radio society in Penticton is trying to set up a community radio station, and are raising money through throwing a vinyl swap (The Peach City VinylFest) September 30, and are open to receiving any vinyl records that anybody wants to donate.

Our website is http://peachcityradio.org/

Also if you have records, cd's, or anything related to music that you want to sell, you can rent a table for only $25.

Hiya,

A lot of my cds have seen better days but they sound as clear as when I 1st got them, bar one where 1 line plays too fast. I don't have any vinyl because it's easier for me to put a cd in. I've known lots of people who dispose of their own vinyl by passing it onto me – I get someone to put it on cd then keep the original in case the cd scratches – unless it's not mine, in which case I give it back.

Since you're getting rid – have you got any blues??

Even reel to reel tapes are dependent on storage conditions. I work in the biggest user of storage media in the world...the seismic exploration industry. Even now I'm occasionally asked to try and recover data from old 9 track tapes recorded in the 70s and early 80s. A lot o fthe time we can't...sometimes you can even see the oxide sitting in the tape case, having fallen off the carrying medium.

Our industry generally re-transcribes stored data every 5 years, often onto 2 or 3 types of media. It's a massive on-going job: just the positioning data from a 12 streamer marine seismic line ( 2-3 hours worth of acquisition) can take up a gigabyte, and the seismic data volume for the same line can take up 15-20 Gb. My QC guys, who are only *sampling* small subsets of the data, generally fill 3 x 2 Terabyte disks on a single 4-5 week survey.

I'm sure everybody is aware, but it doesn't do any harm to remind.
CDs have a shelf life (7 years was mooted to me once).
We have spent the last few years storing our collection on external hard discs, and have housed copies in the National Sound Archive at the British Library and at the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Dublin - we have also deposited copies with trusted friends.
Any valuable or irreplacable material you have is well worth the money and effort of backing up somewhere.
Ironically, it is reel-to-reel recordings that have stood the test of time better than all other formats (some of ours date back to the mid 1960s

I had a similar problem last year, Janie. MAKE the kid look them over and pick the ones he absolutely wants to keep. I had good luck selling a mixed lot on craigslist. I priced them at about 50 cents apiece, and insisted they take the whole lot. They sold in 3 days. The guy was muttering, "My wife's gonna kill me!" as he loaded the car. If he made money on one or two albums, I figure he earned it.

I wouldn't trash them.

Vinyl is still there (all coomments about it wearing out, warping, etc accepted). Most new "indie" music is brought out on vinyl as well as on CD and downloads. In fact it's normal for a new release to be issued on say, a limited edition 200 or 500 pressing vinyl which includes a download code in the album packaging.

So most youngsters I know have turntables as well as download players. My own vinyl collection is constantly being raided by my kids (19 to 25) and whenever I visit one of their flats I usually come back with a few records I've had to retrieve...only to see them disappear again a few weeks later!

The message is, I think, that unless I am inclined to clear the storage space to keep these LP's for my son, I may as well put them up on Freecycle or trash them.

A few years ago I got the urge to dig out my old (very good) turntable and play some of the few vinyls I had. The problem was that I felt that I really needed to replace the needle/pickup due to some "storage deterioration."

Conclusion: It's a lot easier to find a decent turntable than it is to get a good needle for it, and using a worn-out or damaged one can be very hard on your vinyls.

It's also advisable to use the right needle for the vinyl you're playing, since the "skinny ones" intended for stereo LPs can cut the bottom of the grooves in older mono records, and the big ones intended for mono disks may plow the entire groove out of existence on an LP.

It also is an absolute fiction that "vinyl lasts forever." ALL MATERIALS you can make anything out of will "spontaneously" creep and change dimensions in time, and vinyl is among the "really creepy" things in common use. The recordings will still "sound good" after a very long time, but probably don't really "sound the same" as when they were fresh. Fortunately(?) it's a lot harder to "quantify the changes" for analog signals than for digital ones, and even harder to hear them (until they get really gross), so it's still appropriate to protect and preserve what you have on good vinyl, if it's of value to you.

It's impossible to pick a "best" method for archiving, since we can't tell how long anything will last until we live long enough to say "well, that one didn't." With a little optimism, we can guess that what we can pick off of older forms now, and save in digital form, may quite possibly remain unchanged when all the vinyl has sagged into heaps and lumps. (But I don't expect to be around to settle the arguments about what "shoulda been done instead of ..." by then.)

From: John on the Sunset Coast

Intersting read some of our posts from 5-1/2 years ago. There are several references to vinyl outlasting CDs. So just HOW LONG will a CD last?

I got my first ones in 1984/85 and they sound as clear and pure as the first day I got them. Even ones I recorded from vinyl perhaps eight or ten years ago sound as good as when first transferred them.

Vinyl on the other hand may warp over the years, and definitely the sound degrades after many plays no matter how careful one handles them.
All the other negatives about their use is true, too. That said, when at home I would rather listen to an LP with its smoother and ambient sound than a professional or homemade version of that same album.

Janie, if 18yo wants them, perhaps if he indexes and researches them he'll learn that there are only a few he truly wants. Which isn't necessarily realistic in your situation depending on personalities, how much/soon you need that kitchen space etc; it's just a thought.

Subject: RE: Disposing of Vinyl

Are they worth keeping or giving away if their condition is essentially unknown but probably far from "mint" for most of them, and is also probably dependent on the equipment on which they might be played? I'm sure none of them are "mint" condition.

When I left my ex the collection was locked in a storage unit that I could not get to. 5 years later he has recently returned them to me. I live in a very small house with little storage. The 2 long crates are now sitting in my kitchen, and I either have to get rid of them, or get rid of other stuff to be able to store them. (My 18 y.o. son wants me to keep them for him, btw, and that figures into the equation, but is not the primary factor.)

200-250 LPs, a very eclectic collection that includes all the LP's my parents owned, dating back to the late 1950's when they bought our first stereo system. Some folk, but not a lot. Would take a lot of research that I don't have time or inclination to do to figure out what might be currently unavailable as remastered CD's (or even what is worth hanging onto to insure it is still available, even if on a noisy LP if it hasn't been remastered and released in a more post-modern format.)

I suspect the collection includes a lot of "trash" i.e. readily available on CD, and if not, not worth preserving, and a few "treasures." Because the collection includes so many genres and covers so many years there is much here that I have no idea whether to value or not. By value, I mean worth hanging onto or finding good homes for in order to preserve.   I'm guessing there are a few, but not many albums in the collection that have some monetary value beyond the postage to send them to a buyer.

Foolstroupe- This store pays or gives credit according to the value of the items brought in. Typical dealers' discount though, so one could do better on Ebay, but still a good store. One can spend hours going through their well-organized stacks. I search mostly for old classical material that has been dropped from commerce; too many people are looking for blues, folk, jazz, so scarce and it goes quickly.

Why all the legal nonsense? It is true, but, like used books, there is no enforcement of the implied contracts.

Surely, if you are converting vinyl for other people, then all you have to do is give them back the record along with the copy.
It solves your problem of storage, and it covers the legal argument, because the original owner still has the right to own a copy.
If they don't want it, tell them you have to give it back to stay out of jail- which is nearly true.

Such stores gamble on people just giving them 'everything' - they know what to look for to find the 'valuable' LPs among the junk.

I have two turntables hooked up, one being for the old 78's, both fitted with proper cartridges. Hard to find for the 78s. Some vinyl is still being produced for collectors, no problem getting equipment for lps. There are 3-speed ones available in these Teac-Crossley advs., but don't mention stylus size. ??
I was transferring vinyl to tape on my tape deck; no problem with my old Luxman "stereo integrated amplifier."
My daughter also has a good lp-45 turntable, and feeds into her computer, producing cds, so I haven't felt the need to get a cd recorder, unless my daughter rebels...

My old 'vinyls' are stored, some I would never get rid of since they keep much, much longer than cds. We have a store specializing in old 'wax,' they will take old vinyl if in good condition and give credit- not much, it will go toward cds in their stock.

Most turntables on sale these days do not appear to have a suitable needle for 78s - and only a very few ever even have the 78 speed capability. I have seen one 'retro' 'record-player' with teh 78 speed that had no turnover needle, and the woman tried to assure me that the single type of needle would be ok for 78s!!!!!

My guess is that when the time comes that I buy a different, more sophisticated turntable, it will have the needle(s) for 78s.

Incidentally I don't think all turntables have the in/out lines that this Teacc does. Do they? The turntables I lived with nigh on 40 years ago did not.

As you play all your new CDs
Give a thought to your old LPs
Throw them out with a cold cold heart
Or transform those LPs into art

Chorus:
Spray them gold like the harvest moon
Hang them up in the living room
Go right now to where paint is sold
Buy a can, go outside, spray them gold

Heat 'em up in an oven warm
When they're soft you can change their form
Let them flop, let them bend and then
When they're cool they get hard once again

Make a clock out of Johnny Cash
Make a lamp out of Monster Mash
Lawrence Welk, done with vinyl corn
On the wall they can all be reborn

"78s use a DIFFERENT needle. They use a thicker needle. And if you use the thinner needle that we use for our 33s and 45s on a 78, you can cut the grooves deeper, and RUIN the disc"

78s use a 2.5 mil stylus, LPs & 45s (Microgroove) use a 1 mil (.001-inch) stylus.

Note that there are many different 'equalisation curves' for both - many more for 78s especially for early 78s before 'standardisations' came in. Using the 'wrong' equalisation curve results in a distortion in the tonal balance of the recording - too much or not enough treble, etc.

You can get the right equalisation curve by using the correct sort of preamp that has adjustable circuits. The Aussie Mag Silicon Chip recently published a kit with all the technical data tables and suggested R/C circuit substitutions, even allowing several to be built direct on the circuit board and selected as desired.

Also many early '78s' from various companies often were recorded at differing speeds - 80 rpm, or other slightly differing speeds - taking the sound at the 'wrong' speed means that the perceived pitch is off. You can compensate for this with certain software packages.

Vinyl's gotta go-I just got a turntable that plays the LP into the 'puter, removes hisses 'n' scratches and the bacon sandwich frying effect so loved by LP enthusiasts, saves it to WAV files and you can then transfer it to CD. After that, then den gets cleared of stuff which I have loved since 1965 onwards.
I'm waiting for my son to help me get it going properly and then the vinyl going.
My pal, Bob Hauxworth at Otley's Music Box, Otley, North Yorks, UK. will then get a lot of vinyl to sell. If you are in the area, go see him and say Roger sent you.

You can buy brand-new turntables for LPs.

There are plenty of dealers in secondhand LPs.

i'd add auctions to the list of useful places to dispose,if that's your decision.

incidentally I recently reacquired my 78s from the ancestrals, looked for a turntable that could play them and one turned up in a charity shop a couple of months ago for £10.

the world is rich in such stuff if you're patient.

   Best wishes,

And if you use the thinner needle that we use for our 33s and 45s on a 78, you can cut the grooves deeper, and RUIN the disc. I read it on Mudcat, so I know it must be true! ;-)

John in the Sunset, keep in mind that these are not *my* albums- they belong(ed) to people who want(ed) them converted to CD. If I keep the vinyl albums I will simply have inherited their original problem.

I didn't copy the blurbs on the album jacket but I do create a numbered index of everything, separate to each CD.

The turntable that I acquired, btw, is a Teacc. It works great, seems sturdy, cost a little over $100. I plug it into my boombox speakers or listen to the cuts on my headset.

Before long, though, I expect I will be getting a more expensive Teacc- one that in addition to 45s and 33 1/3s will also let me convert 78s and cassette tapes. I know a lot of people who want their cassettes converted. Including me.

A CD may not hold up as well as physical recordings but there is an ease in CDs - repeat; programming; numbering- that you simply don't have with the others. iPod is different but I don't have it, nor do the people who are asking me to transfer their songs.

Incidentally, WHY is iPod more durable, more longlived?

Ebbie, get rid of the CD copies. Vinyl sounds much better, and the jackets often have background info on the music and/or performers. True, they do take up lots more space than CDs. BTW, in a year or so I expect you'll be transfering CDs to iPod and will be looking for a home for those outsized, obsolete CDs. ;)

Regarding the difficulty of transferring mono LPs onto CDs (which can only play in stereo), mentioned by LTS above: you should (hopefully, depending on youe recording software) be able to record the sound from the vinyl LP in mono, then, once you have done this, open a new empty file in stereo, anc copy and paste the mono track into both channels of the stereo file. So you end up with two tracks, identical to one another. This has worked for me. Maybe not true stereo, but the CD player thinks it is.

But that was no help to Ebbie.
You could try boxing the LPs carefully and then building them into your house. Imagine someone a couple of generations away finding them, and searching for a way to play them.

I always liked the idea of time capsules.

In Oz and NZ, Dick Smith shops sell a turntable with pre-amp, seemingly specifically for turning vinyl to CD. Pretty fragile thing, though.

Liz the Squeak> Now all I need is the same sort of gizmo to do cassette to MP3...

Actually you are almost there, Liz. At the top front of the turntable just beneath the tone arm there is a little 1/8" line input jack.

All you need is a tapedeck, tape player or boombox that has a line output. Run a connector from the tape deck/player to the jack on the ION turntable. Now you can transfer tapes to CD or MP3 *through* your ION turntable.

All the same technology is being applied. The only difference is that sound source is not the LP!

"If the original is destroyed, it no longer exists, so the 'copy' becomes the original :-) "

Well Mr Bush Lawyer,
shall I bring flowers or chocolates or flowers when I visit you in Jail? :-)

If you copy, then destroy by intent the original, you have destroyed by intent your right to lease.

If you copy then give away or sell the original, you have also forfeited your 'right to lease'.

If you have something in writing from the 'owners of the material for lease', you may have more 'rights' than the above.

If the material is now legally out of copyright under law, the situation may then be different. If, however, the material has been reissued at a later time than the copy you have by the 'rights owners', then you may still be in breach of copyright by 'copying'.

How about a time capsule?

Vinyl really does last a long time, which CD won't, so it seems like a reasonable idea.

Include a basic diagram of a machine to play them (remember, these things will play with a sewing needle and paper cone) etched onto something equally lasting.

For those who like the Chuck Wagon Gang, you might give a listen to the Village Singers. They are not a copy of the CWG but have a similar quality.   Several recordings are available on emusic.com.

We have one of those ION turntable jobbies... it's great! Can be a bit difficult taking mono to stereo though, I've got one or two recordings that alternate speakers so if you're listening in the car (which has a knackered speaker) you lose half the song.

Now all I need is the same sort of gizmo to do cassette to MP3...

I sure wish my budget would allow it...I have a LOT on vinyl to transfer, and only a cheap Sears turntable to play them on.....(I think it uses needles made out of recycled pewter beer mugs)

I thought my interest in vinyl was at an end... until my wife bought me a new USB turntable for Christmas!

This gizmo is a normal belt-drive turntable with RCA plugs to connect to your sound system. But it also has a pre-amp and USB cable! Packaged with Audacity and SoundSoap, I am now able to transfer and enhance my old albums/45's/78's/tapes, then take them to whatever audio format I wish. I'm choosing MP3 Pro at the moment for convenience and file size.

For info look for ION USB Turntable (ITTUSB) on www.circuitcity.com. There's a few reviews on-line, too.

Am I now rummaging through second hand stores for old albums? You bet I am!

My late wife always used to go to look what was on offer at our local auction saleroom. One day she came back with 200 Folk LPs and four appalachian dulcimers. There had been a house clearance of an old folkie, and when we looked at the rest of the stuff that was on offer, we kind of wished we'd met him.

I have lots of vinyl and won't get rid of it. I also have a turntable, and turntables are still available in most places -- a decent one will run you about fifty dollars US.

There's a whole LOT of stuff on vinyl that will NEVER be burned onto a CD. And from what I've seen "dee-jays" and hip-hoppers do to vinyl shouldn't happen to any music.

In the UK we have charity shops (thrift shops?) we can give old vinyl records to, if we can't be bothered with the hassle of selling them.

I've sold some on ebay, but it's time-consuming to list them with full details, description of any faults, etc., and by the time you ship them you're lucky to make any money at all.

For 'prized' albums though, by artists I really admire, especially if the albums are not available on CD, I prefer to keep the albums for (a) backup purposes, if anything should happen to the CD-R; and (b) the sleeve notes, lyrics, songwriting credits, etc. (I can't be bothered to copy all that lot out!) - and even the old photos are on the cover are interesting sometimes.

i have seen clocks and wallhangings out of old record albums
and big wavy chip bowls...but not for salsa, cuz there is a
hole in the bottom...not as big as the 45's, though.

maybe make a frisbee or disc golf type game out of them?

or a type of horse shoes where you throw them onto dowels?

best place to melt them is in the back window of a car.

Who I was thinking of was Harold Timmons, former piano player for the Chuck Wagon Gang during the years they had one. (The early groups were all a capella) He is a historian of the group and also has items for sale. I know he is on the up and up and would tell you if you had anything of value.

His site seems not to be operating at the moment, but you would find it here. http://www.memorylanegospel.com/chuckwagongang.html

I see the CWG has their own site http://www.thechuckwagongang.net/
Including a blog (doesn't everyone nowadays?)and a discussion board. That could be a possible outlet.

I have not explored but may when I get time.

You could take up WYSIWYG's suggestions, they might be as viable. I have no vested interest in suggesting Harold. Postage is a big thing with vinyl, costing about what items are worth in some cases.

Dovesong would probably like the gospel material, or Kevin Nutt at WFMU Sinner's Crossroads. Let me know if Dale's lead doesn't snap 'em up and I will help make a connection.

Wish I still had a vinyl player myself, but alas!

Unfortunately there aren't many libraries anymore that would be interested in having them, and unless they are rarities, it is unlikely you could get much for them on sale at eBay or disposing of them at flea markets either.

They're like anything else, they are worthless unless you can find someone who wants them.

Of the ones you have mentioned, I would doubt that there are any rarities. As far as the CWG is concerned, and maybe the rest of the gospel stuff, I can put you in touch with someone who MIGHT be interested. It has been a good while since I corresponded with this particular person, but I could check if you wish.

Dale, I too grew up with them, and it was a real kick hearing them again. I don't think any of these albums are of the original generation, or at least not all four. I remember when I was a kid how much my mother preferred the first group.

I am 71 years old. I am not going to start collecting vinyl. Especially since these orders are coming from people who are trying to rid themselves of vinyl. If I kept each album I would end up with a bigger problem than the original owners.

I won't throw them away. I would like to find people who would prize them.

They are all in good shape. I found only one song in 16 albums that had a scratch in it.

Well, Ebbie, asking if I've heard of the CWG is like asking if Carter has Little Liver Pills! I grew up listening to them on the WJJD Suppertime Frolic and still listen to them to this day.   Rose, Anna, Jim and Dad, though as the years went by they became a lot like George Washington's ax, with the head replaced twice and the handle seven times, so hearing them today is not quite the same experience.

At work I still refer to that full stop between verses as "Chuck Wagon Gang Style."

They sound different, and the vinyl is a lot more durable. Maybe find a place out of the way to store them so when the CD dies you can burn a new copy.

I've recently started a new thing- converting vinyl albums to CDs. I'm enjoying it a lot, but there is the problem of what to do with the albums. I'm told that I can keep them - but I don't want them. I make a CD master of each album and that's all I need.

Where is a good or logical place to go with them?

At this point I've just finished my first project and the albums are of 'The Chuck Wagon Gang' (all gospel- anyone ever hear of them?), a couple of quartets, the Stamps and the Statesmen, and a number of albums of John Denver.
