Subject: Tune Req: The Minstrel Boy From: Minstrel Soldier Boy Date: 18 Jan 07 - 01:20 AM Hello everyone. I am an Irish American Soldier stationed in Savannah, GA with the 3rd Infantry Division Band. We are trying to get our hands on a copy of the Mintrel Boy for Irish Whistle. The more difficult the better but at this point anything would be welcomed. It has been requested of us to play it in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah. Thank you all and good day to you. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Minstrel Boy From: Bob Bolton Date: 18 Jan 07 - 03:03 AM G'day Minstrel Soldier Boy - Well, you did say "The more difficult the better... " but Eb is going to be rather interesting on a D whistle! I know that Moore's song was first published in F ... not quite so alien for whistle ... my (low...ish) F Overton would sound very nice - but you need someone to drop this by one semitone (or read everything down one half space) to play it in a D whistle's "home key". Regards, Bob |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Minstrel Boy From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 18 Jan 07 - 09:30 AM There are several sheet music versions (the first few in F) at The Levy Sheet Music Collection - type Minstrel boy in the first seach box (I don't think I can do a direct link to the songs at Levy, they're temporary IIRC, so you need to go via the search). There are also numerous version in D, G, A and Eb at JC's Tunefinder - The Minstrel Boy. Mick

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Minstrel Boy From: GUEST,pattyClink Date: 18 Jan 07 - 10:27 AM Has anyone heard the medley Tommy Makem did which combines "Let Erin Remember" and "The Minstrel Boy"? It's nice, partly because the Minstrel Boy is so short when played by itself, just the 2 verses no chorus. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Minstrel Boy From: Mrrzy Date: 18 Jan 07 - 04:49 PM I've heard his March Medley that has Let Erin Remember and "The boys who beat the black & tans were the boys from the county Cork" [don't remember the title], but not the Minstrel Boy... interesting. What album, or was it a performance? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Minstrel Boy From: GUEST,pattyClink Date: 18 Jan 07 - 08:08 PM That was on "Live at the Irish Pavilion", the old tape says Shanachie 52036. No beaten black&tans in sight. Two other beautiful performances on it, Dark Rosaleen, and Gartan Mother's Lullaby. But the real masterpiece on that tape was the fine old sailing shanty "Tanqueray-Martini-O" ;-) |
