How odd. No wonder I've never heard of it. Americans don't have a term for this. It's easy to see why—they never discuss it. You would never catch an American man telling his buddies anything about his sexual relations with his wife. Some things are sacred!

American women are not so reticent. They have something they call "girl talk" which means stuff they discuss amongst themselves, but never discuss if there are any men present. I don't know what it consists of, and I don't think I want to know!

Being "On a promise" means that (usually) a husband is expecting to get home and have and "early night" (Nudge, nudge, wink wink...). In other words he is on a promise that his wife will let him have sex (and presumably this is a rare ocurrence), so he is wanting to get home early from the pub, instead of staying until throwing out time with his friends as would normally be his habit.
Quack!
GtD.

There seems to be some British idiom here that I don't understand. What does it mean to be "on a promise"?

"It's hard to imagine any of their chosen material being done better - or indeed differently. A bright-eyed, lively sense of commitment and involvement is always present, whether the team tackles serious song (Vaughan Williams' Linden Lea, or the lovely sad Land Of The Leal) or light-hearted witty soufflés (Grant's own compositions such as England Green and Promise Tonight, or choice selections from the pens of the master wordsmiths namechecked above), or soulful blues standards (St. Louis Blues)."

The title is "Promise Tonight" and it was written by Grant.

Quicksilver sang this hilarious song in Weymouth, did Grant or Hilary write it?
