For anyone within striking distance of Sudbury, (Essex/Suffolk borders), UK:

There will be a production of "Candleford" at the Quay Theatre, Sudbury from Tuesday 27th February to Saturday 3rd March 2007.

"Live music, dance, song and drama combine to create a wonderful panorama of rural life in Oxfordshire at the beginning of the last century."

This play, by Keith Dewhurst, based on the trilogy of books by Flora Thompson, was first performed at the National Theatre in 1979, with traditional music and original music from Ashley Hutchings and John Tams.

Booking details are here: The Quay Theatre

Come and see us !

Let me know if you are coming and would like to meet up afterwards for a mini-Mudgather in the bar.

Cheers !

I'm refreshing this post in case anyone missed it who would be interested in seeing this.

It is a lovely play, with lots of traditional music and dance.

A lovely play indeed Jeanie. I was took part in the production that Gravesend Theatre Guild produced many years back (I did the morris jig) at the Woodville Halls in Gravesend, and was my intro to amdram. Great fun, with poignance too, the ending hits you right in the guts. Go and see it.

Yes, Dave, I agree about the very moving ending. That song "At Jacob's Well" is just right. Likewise the beginning, with that beautiful song, "The Year Turns Around":

And the snow falls
And the wind calls
And the year turns round again....

We are having "real snow", shipped in from a frozen pea factory on the East coast !

I am the other way round from you - i.e. this is my "intro" from acting into morris dancing ! We had our first rehearsal for the morris jig today (3 men, 3 women) [being taught by a "proper" morris man]. What fun - and what a great way to keep fit. I am hooked already. We are only a third of the way into the dance - so I hope there aren't any dodgy hop-skip-and-jumps to come. So far, so good. Will keep you posted.

I was recruited by Ian and Hilda Dedic a few years ago(few = probably quite a lot) to sing for a Gaytonians performance in the Harrow Tithe Barn (aka the Harrow Museum). Definitely recommended, if you can get to a performance. Good luck Jeanie!

Yay, that's great, Wendy. Whereabouts are you based ? Let me know which night you're coming.

I hope none of you are expert morris dancers (I will be the one trying to look as though I know what I'm doing). I am also the fortune teller at the beginning, and various other characters. (Everybody gets to play lots of parts).

Hope to be meeting you. Did you know, there is also a folk club at The Quay Theatre, last Sunday of every month, except December, in the theatre bar.

Best wishes,
- jeanie

Refreshing this for any Essex/Suffolk people who might have missed it earlier. We are in the last stages of rehearsal now and it's a lovely show.

Hope to be meeting you, Wendy & Co.

All good wishes,
- jeanie
