Quad! Now that's something! Those are cute. I have a VCR tape of my own kids laughing at their dad (behind the camera) when they were tiny--it is the kind of laughter that does your heart good.

Thanks!

When my kids were babies I remember I'd do damn near ANYTHING to make them laugh -- it didn't usually take much.

It's been a whole lotta years since I was in baby mode, and now I have just a few more months to get back into before the first grandkid arrives! Something tells me I won't have to work real hard at it...

Great videos!

I went from reading about the loss of NHDave with tears in my eyes, then clicked on this thread. Thanks for the balance, KT.:-) My Morgan still has that un-selfconscious laugh of a baby, at 3 years old. There's not a day goes by but he makes us all laugh. One of his fav. sayings to get out of trouble for being sassy is to claim, "I'se just being funny, Mama!"

I love it, when I'm out in public, to hear that child laugh, uninhibited, very young and unformed. It is a universal sound, and every adult head in the place perks up upon hearing it. I remember some great shopping trips with my kids, entertaining them in the child seat in the cart. Sharing that joy with others in the store.

When I see people walking through the store with a baby in that seat and they're on the cell phone in their own world, ignoring the child, I feel sorry for all of us. The child is losing that precious one-on-one time, the parent doesn't realize what they're missing, and everyone else is losing out on the charm of a happy child.

My kids hear about it regularly. I want them to know that when they're parents they need to take every opportunity to help that child grow, and the best way is to give of themselves. It is that easy. And laughter is a great reward!

A side note: the local public radio station is soliciting local essays along the lines of the "This I Believe" series that has been revived on NPR. I've wondered what I would write that might be affirming and positive and important enough that it would fit their format. I've enjoyed many of the entries and agreed with them wholeheartedly--but I couldn't have written them. But I can take my belief in how important it is to take advantage of all of those little opportunities with your children. So I'm going to write something and send it in. The germ of it appeared here.

Just so you know!

SRS, that's great! I love what you've written above....Your words will give many NPR listeners pause, and provide a little bit of healing for a world sorely in need of it.

Nancy, congrats on your soon-to-be status as a Grandma. Let us know when you hear that baby's first belly laugh!

It's true, there's nothing like the joy of hearing a baby's laughter. What a gift from that little person!

Kendall, I'm sure you're still giving those girls a thing or two to laugh about!

Kat, you're lucky to have that little guy nearby. I hope someone is writing down all of the funny things he says and does.....you know, the ones you think you'll remember forever.....but you don't.....

I can't hear the laughing (something is clogging up our sound card) but the face on that baby is enough to make anyone smile.

I've never held back when it comes to laughing. I got thrown out of my village church for laughing once - the priest told me that 'the House of God is no place for laughing and giggling'.... my response was 'what place could be better for rejoicing' and left it there and then. Didn't set foot in that particular church again until my father's funeral 18 years later.

Life is depressing enough without having to stifle laughter and supress giggles.

Thanks, KT. Ya know my dau. was keeping a kind of diary for him. I note the date and age of each of his extraordinary pieces of artwork (not all of them warrant that) and I do tell her about the things he says, but you are right. I shall have to start a Morgan file on my computer and keep a diary for him.

A few years ago, my son asked me to write to him of when he was a baby and on. It was a challange at first, but when I got going it was really fun and brought out things I thought I had forgotten. He never did say if it helped, but I decided then I ought to do it for my girls, too.

SRS, that's a wonderful idea! I almost sent them one which I had in my head about the joy of a child's laughter; that laugh embodies Joy, esp. Joy in the Moment, for me. Having come so close to not being here, I think I am even more aware of it than I used to be. I heartily agree with you about parents missing those moments. Half the reason my dau. and I enjoyed taking Morgan shopping, and still do, is because he is so entertaining, not just for us, but those around us.:-)

For sheer joy as provided by a small child (that I didnt even know)
The scene, I am in a large Supermarket (with Liz the Squeak but we had separated to shop) my beard (which is mostly grey and white)was very bushey, due to my not having trimmed it for some time.
As I reached the end of one aisle, around the end towards me came a small adorable girl, about 4 years old . she stopped like she had been struck and her eyes became as big as saucers, as, frozen to the spot she looked up at me with the sweetest smile and said, "Are You Father Christmas?" with (for me) amazing presence of mind I put a finger to my lips and said, " shhhhh ,I'm off duty".
She dissappeared back the way she had come, and a moment later I heard this excited voice saying" Mummy. Mummy, Father Christmas is round there, but its a Secret, cos' he's off Duty", and a few seconds later 3 heads (one adult and 2 children) appeared round the end of the aisle, The look of gratitude on the mothers face set me off chuckling at exactly the right moment, I dont think I went "Ho Ho Ho" but it made me smile, especially when I thought of her telling her friends about Santa buying chocolate in Sainsburys. It gave me a warm feeling for a long time afterwords, and the expression on her face will be with me forever.

katlaughing, you might try something I did for my grandchildren once. I created a booklet 'When Mommy was Little' in which I illustrated in color the little stories I wrote about their mother. (My daughter had an exciting childhood!)

Guess who really loved the booklet? My daughter.

Unfortunately John doesn't react that way at all when kids mistake him for Santa Claus. For some reason he doesn't like it. In fact he is pretty bah humbug when it comes to Christmas. A shame, because I think he misses a lot of the joy.

Isn't it funny how they laugh at those little repetitive noises - I've had some sessions like that with my grandson Max. You can see him waiting for the next one - sometimes when it doesn't come, he laughs anyway at the anticipation.

I think I managed to enjoy a lot of laughter with my own kids. Laughter is very important - it's helped me through a lot of tough times. Sometimes it's the only thing that keeps you sane!

That's a wonderful idea, Ebbie! When my grandsons back East were really little, I made them each a photo book of their mom and her family so they would have an idea of their Out West family. Stories would have been a bonus.

Miccaluv...beautiful!

Jenny, yes, laughter is so important. They are even teaching classes in it here. I don't know whether to be sad that folks have to be taught or grateful it is being recognised as necessary.:-)

Kat, we have laughter workshops here in Oz too. It is now being recognised that laughter provides many health benefits - reduced stress, lowered blood pressure, a strengthened immune system, and many others.

I laugh a lot, and I can feel it doing me good!

I watched SNL Saturday where they did a thing about Bush's PR team deciding to improve his ratings by presenting him on TV as a cartoon chipmunk. And you see Bush giving a speech but he looks like a chipmunk and his voice is high-pitched and chipmunky. The public loved it so the PR team decided to portray Cheney the same way. Then you see Cheney on Meet The Press talking like a chipmunk while munching nuts in real fast little bites as he talks about American soldiers being greeted in Iraq as liberators. But soon other celebrities began to copy this tactic to prolong or revive their careers. It became so common that Bush's approval ratings slid down again and the White House scrambled for a new angle. What seemed to resonate best among the people was to have the president speak while immersed up to his chest in water and cutting big fart bubbles while talking. Then they show an actual clip of a Bush speech but digitally altered to show water up and his chest and you hear gurgling, underwater farting sounds and big bubbles breaking the surface as Bush continues to speak. It was so funny I laughed until I cried.

I'd had surgery a few years ago and was recuperating but still feeling pretty bad. I went looking for humorous programs to work through the blues after this surgery--and landed on The Golden Girls. Trouble was, some of those were so funny it hurt the incision area to laugh and I had to change channels!

This reminds me of an old party game. Have everyone lie down on the floor on their backs, with each person's head resting on someone else's belly, making one big circle. Pick one person to start: that person says "Ha!" The next person—the one whose head is on Person #1's belly—says "Ha! Ha!" Third person says "Ha! Ha! Ha!" and so on. See if you can make it once around the circle without everyone losing control. You probably can't do it. It's practically impossible not to laugh when your head is being bounced up and down by someone else's laughter.

1. you believe in Santa Claus
2. you don't believe in Santa Claus
3. you are Santa Claus
4. you LOOK like Santa Claus

Makes me smile a bit.

My Mate Mick

First let me tell you that Mick is a Yorkshireman.

Mick went to have a Vasectomy. Now being from the White Rose County he is as tight as a fishes*sshole and would not pay to have a General Anaesthetic but opted for a Local. The Surgeon injected Micks 'Family Jewels" with the stuff and left for 15 minutes until it took effect. When the surgeon came back he stroked Mick's scrotum with the HANDLE of the scalpel and asked if Mick could feel anything. Mick assumed that the surgeon had used the BLADE of his knife and so he fainted.
He had to go back the following week for a General Anaesthetic.
________________________________________________________________________________________

Another tale about Mick is that once he was at a house party and had gone to the bar for two drinks for him and Mrs Mick. On re-entering the lounge which now had soft music and the lights were dimmed Mick tripped over the legs of someone sitting on the floor and fell forward. Now Mick was a pipe smoker and smoked one of those things with a straight metal stem,as he pitched forward being a 'Yorkie' ( ie Good,Rich and Thick) he clung on to the drinks, well they were free !, and finished his trick by coming into contact with a chair arm which rammed his pipe almost through the back of his head. The glowing bowl ended up under his nose and caused a bad burn.
He would not tell us how he acquired the injury but Mrs Mick did.

Stilly, if you think you had it bad, consider this. Whilst in hospital recovering from Limpits birth via C-section, my never loving husband brought in my Walkman and a new tape for me... Les Barker. Talk about laughing your guts out, I actually DID!

Nothing's more infectious than a baby's laughter. You CAN'T listen to it and not join in.

Although a few spots in the first video looked like the kid wasn't sure how he felt.

Like an uncle of my buddy said when playing with his nephew's wean: "Och, yer laugh's nae far fae yer greet!"

A man went to see his Doctor who said " I am sorry but I must tell you that you have contracted Yellow 24"
"What is that?." the patient replied " Well its a new illness, first your blood turns yellow and then you have just 24 Hrs to live" said the Doctor.
He went home and decided not to tell his wife what the Doc' had told him.
As usual on Wednesday night the man and his wife went to Bingo.
The first 4 numbers were called and the man had 4 corners netting him £100
A few numbers later he had a complete line up for £500
Next he got a 'Full House' £5000 which also scooped the nationwide pot of £300,000.
Whilst collecting his cheque the caller said "Well mate its your lucky day isn't it"
"Lucky Day,Lucky Day!! the man said." " I have got Yellow 24 mate"
The caller said "Bloody Hell,he's won the raffle as well"
