I need some words: You all saw it, that was the request, so here goes, right from the first page of "The New Comprehensive A-Z Crossword Dictionary" A, aa, aardvark, Arron, aba, abaca, aback, Abaddon, abaft, abalone, abandon, abandoned, abandonment, abase, abasement, abash, abate, abatis, abattoir, abb, abba. There are more, about 1058 pages of them, and I will be more than happy to list them all if you think it will help!

I know I've been away for the last couple of weeks, but I thought the general concensus was that we weren't going to do things like the above to new people anymore? That's twice I've seen someone have their metaphorical wrist slapped in the past couple of days. Please tell me things haven't changed in the Mudcat? Perturbed, Mo

AlaisdairUK, According to Banjer and me, you're not a real Mudcatter until you feel compelled to lecture thread creators on how they name their threads. The problem with an overly-general thread name like this is that various people will see the title and add requests for words to unrelated songs. The thread then becomes a hodge-podge of song requests and responses, with for example someone answering a query three songs back. So please make tiltes more specific (real Mudcatters act like we run the place!)

Alistair, the raging pedant in me would like to point out that "the hoi polloi" is tautologous. It's just "hoi polloi". I'd like to point it out - but I suspect I can't spell it.....!! Naturally, I'm accepted everywhere, as not only do I possess innate natural charm and modesty, but I can and do piss people off with quite stunning speed. Can't think why....... ! BG

Sir Alistair

As an Irish gentleman trapped in an American body, I feel that honor requires that I warn you that trifling with the fair Alison should be considered only in the light of the peril it brings to you. You see, I have pursued her favor across the mountains and valleys of cyberspace and would consider an attack on her as a personal insult. Additionally, she is the musical partner of Alan the Ogre of Australia and he can be vicious when aroused to action. Additionally she has posted by far the most MIDI files to the database and any incursion into profaning her fair person would likely cause a tremendous backlash from the community at large. But more important than any of these things, she is an Irish woman under full sail. Which means she has her hands on her hip, her rapier wit at the ready, and a griddle nearby at all times, in the event she needs to punctuate the point she is making. I would advise caution in this matter!!!!!! LOL

Ok, I can take abuse as well as anyone. With St. Paddys just over, I am reminded of a song my mother sang years ago (many) and I haven't been able to find the words in any of the databases as yet. Don't know the exact title but it was about Casey's new hat. Some lyrics I remember are:

I had a had when I came in I hung it on the rack And I'll have a hat when I go out Or break somebodys back 'tis a daecent(sp?) man I am I am and I don't want to shout But I had a hat when I came in And I'll have a hat when I go out

......ring any bells???

It doesn't appear to be in the database, so we'd better go back to the original request. I bet Wolfgang has the lyrics, which are along the lines of:
Schoolday's over, come on then John
Time you were getting your pitboots on
On with your boots and moleskin trousers, you start at the pit today
Time you were learning the collier's job
And earning the collier's pay.

I remeber another verse - though I may be making composite verses by mixing lines?

Come on then Joe, it's time to go
Time you were working down below
Time you were carrying pick and shovel
Time you were on your way
Time you were learning the collier's job Time you were learning the collier's job
And earning the collier's pay.

Aagh! Caught in the act!! Well, not in the act exactly, but ...

Jo, Ferarra, take it easy; there's enough of me to go 'round (small, but beautifully marked): you'll just have to, well, slot me in to suit yourselves.

I'm here around 8.15 - 8.45 GMT; I don't know what your local time is, but then I don't know where you are; not that it helps when your'e professionally confused like what I am. [Gosh, a small tribute to Ernie Wise just slipped in unconsciously there ... I'm starting to beable again, aren't I?]

Well, I'm down here in beautiful downtown Milton Keynes, while my other half (and my beautiful daughter) is at home is Stonnall, Staffordshire. I have to put a crust on the table, you know, and I've already sent my son out to work. I've avoided the chat room so far, 'cos I think if I went in I'd ever come out; and I haven't sussed out the software yet, either.

Didn't know you spoke Spanish, Jo: moi, je suis impress‚. :o) Oh, and read Ferarra's post before my titling, and all will be revealed.

Steve

Don't worry about spelling my name wrong, Steve, two of my best friends spell it wrong on checks when they buy my craft work.

Well anyway at least this reminded me I've got to go look for that tape. (i.e., for the song that started this thread.) We may have all of the song now, with what was entered up above. Does anybody know? A quick look for the tape didn't find it, which means I'm doomed to searching through dusty cabinets.

The server isn't responding to do a DT search just now, bu I did one yesterday. Paul M, who started this thread, specified a song by Ewan MacColl. I searched [schoolday's over] and found a DIFFERENT song and I searched [Ewan MacColl] and found lots of different songs. I put two verses from my mildly muddled memory on this thread around 11 am yesterday and we're waitng for somebody else to finish the task. By the way, one verse should read "doing the pitman's job" and the other "doing the collier's job" (I wrote 'collier's' in both verses). One recording of this song was by Luke Kelly on the Dubliner's album "Revolution" ['m ALMOST sure of the album title}

Greenhaus gives it away, guys. It's hidden in the DT under the title "Schooldays End" for some reason. Correct text there, too, and suggested guitar chords! Yes, it's one of Ewan MacColl's fine songs. Godamighty, he wrote some dandies, didn't he?

Hello Jo. Sounds like you only just got your sharpness back in time. My server doesn't allow chat rooms either - "security violation", it says. Might be a hint that I'm supposed to be working. We're a poor family, you see, can't afford to use our own phone and computer at the same time. Yes, it's in the morning, a time many 'Catters may only know by hearsay. Still, this way my instant repartee has plenty of time to mature between responses. (Although the first thing that comes into my head is usually the funniest; must be a moral in there somewhere.)

I'm not at my sharpest this morning: I spent a jolly couple of hours last night trying to find a pub in Cambridgshire, and another couple trying to find my way home, with about ten minutes in the middle watching Cosmotheka.

Never mind, back to sleep now.

Are the two versions in the DT any good? Put [john henry] in the search box. If they're NBG, there's been a lot of discussion in another thread you could look through.

AndyG, were you there last night? I found it's 40 miles from MK going, 37 coming back; it's probably a lot less if you don't go the pretty way. I'm just glad I didn't walk!

Dai, it's not for ages yet: 9 months x 30 days x 6 pints of Hook Norton -- nobody's memory can stand up to that!

Steve,
No I'm afraid I wasn't there as I was at the Mayflower folk club, in Cambridge, to see Coope Boyes & Simpson. Fortunately I didn't know Cosmotheka were on so I didn't have a difficult decision to make.

I only walked from the bus stop but it took about an hour to find the pub as it's in the back of bloody beyond, and no-one in St Neots seemed ready to admit it existed.

I found that my "security violation" went away when I downloaded Netscape 4.51 and installed it in place of my 4.01.
That is to say, I had committed the technological faux paux of having less that current technology, rather than having a server with an inpenetrable firewall, though, typically, the failure notice failed to distinguish between problems.
If I plan to write computer commands, I'll need classes in advanced ambiguity and vagueness, tho perhaps just writing them in a foreign language would suffice.
There's some words for you.
Blessings,
Barbara
