Subject: RE: I need some words From: Snuffy Date: 26 Oct 04 - 08:48 AM Susanna Do you mean this MONTO. The Dubliners have recorded this. You'll find more verses and a history of the song here Lyr Req: Monto |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Helen Date: 26 Oct 04 - 05:09 AM Hi Susanna, Welcome to Mudcat. First of all, try doing a search in the DT (Digital Tradition database) which has a search box at the top of this page. Keep both the DT and the Forum ticked because you may also find some good discussions in the Forum on the song you are after. If you still don't find what you want then you can start a new thread. And it works a lot better if you start a new thread with your request, using some info in the thread title, e.g. Dubliners song: Montreux Monto Helen |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: GUEST,Susanna Date: 26 Oct 04 - 04:59 AM I need the words to the song Montreaux Monto by The Dubliners / Luke Kelly - anyone able to help me out please ? Thanks. Susanna. |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 29 Mar 99 - 05:25 AM You're dead right about the Coneygeare, Sue; the problem is, it's impossible to find the first time! And why are all the roads around Cambridge only signposted in the direction you've just come? You can only find the right road after you realise you've taken a wrong turn. Steve |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: SueH Date: 29 Mar 99 - 05:16 AM Ah, AndyG, you must be talking about the Coneygeare in St Neots. It's not too hard to find once you've been there a couple of times. Hitchin Folk Club have some good people on - and if you like sessions, there's a very good one at the Greyhound pub in St Ippolyts (just outside Hitchin) on the 4th Wednesday of every month. SueH |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 29 Mar 99 - 02:42 AM Actually, did you know, (I start to talk like this in the pub around 9.30 - 10 o'clock, to complete strangers) there are more words in the English language than in any other? And where we don't just happen to have the mot just we'll happily pinch somebody else's, unlike some languages (no names, no pack drill!). I have to say, though, I rather enjoy the way the Germans won't invent a new word when four or five old ones will do the job just as well: why call something a tank when you can call it an armoured warfare vehicle? And where else would they have a word for attempt on the life of the aunt of a Hottentot potententate? Steve What? Oh, sorry: Hottentotenpotentatentantentotenattenten. I'm grateful to Fritz Spiegel for enriching my life with that one. (But I don't know if it's die der or das.) |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Jo Taylor Date: 26 Mar 99 - 06:33 PM What a lot of lovely words! I liked this one: The symptoms of Information Fatigue Syndrome include "a hyper-aroused psychological condition", "paralysis of analytical capacity", and "anxiety and self-doubt", leading to "foolish decisions and flawed conclusions". Sounds familiar. Say hello to Jeff if you meet him. The Boodle-Ums were led by a chap called Smot, at least that's what his brother called him. Smot ( a certain Mr Toms)(it's a palindrome!!) was later heard to be playing in an English ceilidh band with a certain Mr Powell, unbeknownst to their respective brothers, curiously enough also known as Mr Toms and Mr Powell, in Devon! (with whom I was playing at the time). Jo (still on the water) |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 26 Mar 99 - 07:54 AM Another OU Alumnus? We should start our own thread - maybe our own Website! Jo, I haven't got a propensity for phonofiddles - I'd just stand 'em on my leg, like everybody else. |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Penny Date: 26 Mar 99 - 07:38 AM The circle closes: I got into this place via a recommendation from someone on the OU alumni site. Hardly been there since. |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 26 Mar 99 - 03:37 AM My brand new OU phone book has him down as Johnson, Jeffrey,S Res Fell, but I haven't met the gentleman. I'd be happy if you'd like to make the introductions. 'Stompers? Rings a bell, but I haven't seen 'em. Actually Jo, if you like words per se, have a look here: http://www.quinion.com/words/ Steve Funny, no jokes in this post ... must be the water ... |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Jo Taylor Date: 25 Mar 99 - 08:57 PM Silly me! Got whisky in it now. Much better, takes the horrid taste away. Do you know Jeff Johnson? He's a mathy lecturer, might even be a prof, there. Yes, there's probably hundreds of staff members, but he's been there years and is likely to hang out in folky places. Also, knowing your propensity for phonofiddles have you come across the Boodle Um Jug Stompers in that area? Don't know if they're still going or not. Off topic? No, we've still got lots of words. Jo |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 25 Mar 99 - 03:35 AM Managar!! Fond greetings to Alto Joy from Sephten Sprake. Don't drink water unless it's been diluted with alcohol first - far more hygienic.
Barabra, have to see about that - thanks for the tip. Pete, I got my OU degree in 1988; I'm actually working - as in being paid - for the OU now. (Details on request!) |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Pete M Date: 24 Mar 99 - 07:25 PM Hi Steve waht courses are you doing with the OU? Pete M |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Barbara Date: 24 Mar 99 - 06:57 PM I found that my "security violation" went away when I downloaded Netscape 4.51 and installed it in place of my 4.01. That is to say, I had committed the technological faux paux of having less that current technology, rather than having a server with an inpenetrable firewall, though, typically, the failure notice failed to distinguish between problems. If I plan to write computer commands, I'll need classes in advanced ambiguity and vagueness, tho perhaps just writing them in a foreign language would suffice. There's some words for you. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Jo Taylor Date: 24 Mar 99 - 06:46 PM Well this thread seems to be providing lots of words for those of you who can't get in to the chat room, so maybe it's not that badly named. Kaspar Veste? Qu'est-ce que c'est? It'll probably dawn on me as soon as I've pressed the button and I've only had water tonight.. Jo |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Date: 24 Mar 99 - 03:56 PM words fail me! |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: AndyG Date: 24 Mar 99 - 12:34 PM Steve, No I'm afraid I wasn't there as I was at the Mayflower folk club, in Cambridge, to see Coope Boyes & Simpson. Fortunately I didn't know Cosmotheka were on so I didn't have a difficult decision to make. I only walked from the bus stop but it took about an hour to find the pub as it's in the back of bloody beyond, and no-one in St Neots seemed ready to admit it existed. AndyG |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 24 Mar 99 - 10:41 AM Are the two versions in the DT any good? Put [john henry] in the search box. If they're NBG, there's been a lot of discussion in another thread you could look through. AndyG, were you there last night? I found it's 40 miles from MK going, 37 coming back; it's probably a lot less if you don't go the pretty way. I'm just glad I didn't walk! Dai, it's not for ages yet: 9 months x 30 days x 6 pints of Hook Norton -- nobody's memory can stand up to that! Steve |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: bmooney3@hotmail.com Date: 24 Mar 99 - 09:36 AM i need the orginal words to THE LEGEND OF JOHN HENRY could you please e-mail them to me or notify me as soon as you can get them it is really important |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: AndyG Date: 24 Mar 99 - 08:33 AM Steve,
I sympathise, I had a long walk on a very rainy night trying to find that particular pub.
AndyG |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 24 Mar 99 - 03:50 AM Steve - I'm extremely glad I didn't come with you, then. Funny things happen when you're in a car in the middle of Cambridgeshire...
Your attempt to use a chatroom via the OU firewall has been noted. When's your appraisal? |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Ian Date: 24 Mar 99 - 03:47 AM Paul Words are in a new thread : Schooldays over - Paul M Cheers! Ian |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 24 Mar 99 - 03:33 AM Hello Jo. Sounds like you only just got your sharpness back in time. My server doesn't allow chat rooms either - "security violation", it says. Might be a hint that I'm supposed to be working. We're a poor family, you see, can't afford to use our own phone and computer at the same time. Yes, it's in the morning, a time many 'Catters may only know by hearsay. Still, this way my instant repartee has plenty of time to mature between responses. (Although the first thing that comes into my head is usually the funniest; must be a moral in there somewhere.) I'm not at my sharpest this morning: I spent a jolly couple of hours last night trying to find a pub in Cambridgshire, and another couple trying to find my way home, with about ten minutes in the middle watching Cosmotheka. Never mind, back to sleep now. Kasper Veste |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Sandy Paton Date: 24 Mar 99 - 02:16 AM Greenhaus gives it away, guys. It's hidden in the DT under the title "Schooldays End" for some reason. Correct text there, too, and suggested guitar chords! Yes, it's one of Ewan MacColl's fine songs. Godamighty, he wrote some dandies, didn't he? Sandy |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Sheye Date: 23 Mar 99 - 08:42 PM Alas! y'all seem to be havin' a great time. My server does not allow chat rooms - some kind of security violation - who knows. I'll wimper at the door - and give my regards... Sheye |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Jo Taylor Date: 23 Mar 99 - 07:31 PM Sorry, it's not at the top of this one, here's the chat room Jo |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Jo Taylor Date: 23 Mar 99 - 07:26 PM Dear Stephen, Sorry, through my haze of red wine last night (we had friends here, don't touch a drop otherwise) I couldn't see the title, tittle, tilty... Sharpness control restored now. Is that 8.15 - 8.45 in the morning? No software required for the Mudcat chat room - just click on link up at the top. Got to go - there's someone in there!! Jo |
Subject: Schoolday's over -education needed From: Donna Quixote Date: 23 Mar 99 - 12:22 PM The server isn't responding to do a DT search just now, bu I did one yesterday. Paul M, who started this thread, specified a song by Ewan MacColl. I searched [schoolday's over] and found a DIFFERENT song and I searched [Ewan MacColl] and found lots of different songs. I put two verses from my mildly muddled memory on this thread around 11 am yesterday and we're waitng for somebody else to finish the task. By the way, one verse should read "doing the pitman's job" and the other "doing the collier's job" (I wrote 'collier's' in both verses). One recording of this song was by Luke Kelly on the Dubliner's album "Revolution" ['m ALMOST sure of the album title} Philippa |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: dick greenhaus Date: 23 Mar 99 - 11:30 AM I hate to break this up, but if you do a search for schoolday* you'll find it in the DT. |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Ferrara Date: 23 Mar 99 - 10:15 AM Don't worry about spelling my name wrong, Steve, two of my best friends spell it wrong on checks when they buy my craft work. Well anyway at least this reminded me I've got to go look for that tape. (i.e., for the song that started this thread.) We may have all of the song now, with what was entered up above. Does anybody know? A quick look for the tape didn't find it, which means I'm doomed to searching through dusty cabinets. |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: alison Date: 23 Mar 99 - 09:08 AM Hahahahahahaha... that'll teach you to think about messing with me alastair... body guards all over the place, (well Michigan anyway....... **grin**) slainte alison |

Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 23 Mar 99 - 06:21 AM Oh my God, Ferrara - I've been spelling your name wrongly! Can you forgive me? It's one thing that's guaranteed to annoy me! Stephen P.S. Don't let on to that AlistairUK! |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 23 Mar 99 - 03:38 AM Actually Jo, I thought you'd gone of in a huff (and if that's too soon, go off in a minute and a huff!) because you didn't want me handling your phonofiddles ... |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Steve Parkes Date: 23 Mar 99 - 03:35 AM Aagh! Caught in the act!! Well, not in the act exactly, but ... Jo, Ferarra, take it easy; there's enough of me to go 'round (small, but beautifully marked): you'll just have to, well, slot me in to suit yourselves. I'm here around 8.15 - 8.45 GMT; I don't know what your local time is, but then I don't know where you are; not that it helps when your'e professionally confused like what I am. [Gosh, a small tribute to Ernie Wise just slipped in unconsciously there ... I'm starting to beable again, aren't I?] Well, I'm down here in beautiful downtown Milton Keynes, while my other half (and my beautiful daughter) is at home is Stonnall, Staffordshire. I have to put a crust on the table, you know, and I've already sent my son out to work. I've avoided the chat room so far, 'cos I think if I went in I'd ever come out; and I haven't sussed out the software yet, either. Didn't know you spoke Spanish, Jo: moi, je suis impress‚. :o) Oh, and read Ferarra's post before my titling, and all will be revealed. Steve |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Martin _Ryan Date: 22 Mar 99 - 08:28 PM "Where did you get that hat , where did you get that hat...." ? It's sneaking up on me, slowly... Subject: RE: I need some words From: Date: 22 Mar 99 - 07:58 PM If you need words, get the Oxford English Dictionary. There's a slew of them there. Many more than most people will ever need.

Subject: RE: I need some words From: Ferrara Date: 22 Mar 99 - 12:06 PM Okay, thought it was in the DB. Have it on one of Ed Miller's tapes, but I'm not sure how accurate my transcription will be. Will look for it. |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: AlistairUK Date: 22 Mar 99 - 11:33 AM I have a feeling that this is a Ewan MacColl song. A guy used to sing it at my local folk club when I lived in the UK. |
Subject: RE: School Day's Over From: Philippa Date: 22 Mar 99 - 11:19 AM I remeber another verse - though I may be making composite verses by mixing lines? Come on then Joe, it's time to go Time you were working down below Time you were carrying pick and shovel Time you were on your way Time you were learning the collier's job Time you were learning the collier's job And earning the collier's pay. |
Subject: We need some words to School Day's Over From: Philippa Date: 22 Mar 99 - 11:13 AM It doesn't appear to be in the database, so we'd better go back to the original request. I bet Wolfgang has the lyrics, which are along the lines of: Schoolday's over, come on then John Time you were getting your pitboots on On with your boots and moleskin trousers, you start at the pit today Time you were learning the collier's job And earning the collier's pay. |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Ferrara Date: 22 Mar 99 - 09:31 AM Shadow, yes, dammit, it rings some bells but they are faint and far away and I WANT THAT SONG. I've heard it, I know I have, seems like I heard a buddy of my dad singing it, but no clear memories at all. Please somebody find it. |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: shadow405 Date: 22 Mar 99 - 08:51 AM Ok, I can take abuse as well as anyone. With St. Paddys just over, I am reminded of a song my mother sang years ago (many) and I haven't been able to find the words in any of the databases as yet. Don't know the exact title but it was about Casey's new hat. Some lyrics I remember are: I had a had when I came in I hung it on the rack And I'll have a hat when I go out Or break somebodys back 'tis a daecent(sp?) man I am I am and I don't want to shout But I had a hat when I came in And I'll have a hat when I go out ......ring any bells??? |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: AlistairUK Date: 22 Mar 99 - 08:48 AM SEE SEE I pissed someone off, I knew if I said I was going to have a go at Alison, that that salacious bugger Mick would be riled. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA a true 'Catter am I. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: Big Mick Date: 22 Mar 99 - 08:44 AM Sir Alistair As an Irish gentleman trapped in an American body, I feel that honor requires that I warn you that trifling with the fair Alison should be considered only in the light of the peril it brings to you. You see, I have pursued her favor across the mountains and valleys of cyberspace and would consider an attack on her as a personal insult. Additionally, she is the musical partner of Alan the Ogre of Australia and he can be vicious when aroused to action. Additionally she has posted by far the most MIDI files to the database and any incursion into profaning her fair person would likely cause a tremendous backlash from the community at large. But more important than any of these things, she is an Irish woman under full sail. Which means she has her hands on her hip, her rapier wit at the ready, and a griddle nearby at all times, in the event she needs to punctuate the point she is making. I would advise caution in this matter!!!!!! LOL Mick Lane |
Subject: RE: I need some words From: AlistairUK Date: 22 Mar 99 - 08:29 AM Oh I don't know mo, you seem an extremely pleasant person to me. and tautologous...i must remember that one for my next TEFL class. |
