Subject: RE: Help with song - The While, Drover ? From: Wolfgang Date: 25 Mar 99 - 10:52 AM Vixen, give us one or more of the Franglais (though I'm not sure, whether my Franglais will suffice for understanding). here's the start of a German translation of the While, Drover: Alf Biene, weil Troja formen hieáe Ghia.. It shows beautifully how all those names tend to get lost or culturally adapted in a translation which is what makes research on folksongs so difficult. Wolfgang |

That's my take on a song that gets too holy. Thanks so much to the Shambles. I haven't grinned like that in quite a while.

Subject: RE: Help with song - The While, Drover ? From: Banjer Date: 22 Mar 99 - 06:58 AM Could this possibly No Nay Never, aka Wild Rover as found in the DT? I would allow after a few drafts, especially on St. Paddy's Day it could sound like that....The later into the evening it gets the more the possibility! What did St. Patrick say to drive the snakes out of Ireland? He said, "Snake, the other white meat, tastes like chicken" |
Subject: RE: Help with song - The While, Drover ? From: AlistairUK Date: 22 Mar 99 - 06:56 AM I once knew a risky Anne but it was without the e and I rather enjoyed the risk (if you want to know what the risk was..never will this secret pass my lips...but it was fun). Gnome Moor is part of Over Fell in Cumbria, a weirder and more desolate spot you will never find in the North west of England. Andy Now had a famous chip shop in Bridlington, and was famous for his generous 'scrumps'. Manny Goodyear is still a gentleman's outfitters (Bespoke) in Whitechapel. There I hope that cleared that up. |
Subject: Help with song - The While, Drover ? From: The Shambles Date: 22 Mar 99 - 06:47 AM Can you help me please with this song, that I heard played on St Patrick's Night. I think the title is The While, Drover. I managed to write down the beginning of it, maybe you could help me with rest. I did try the title in the DT but it was not there?
Ivor Bean, a while, drover,
Andy Now, armoury, turning,
Hand, tits, know, neigh, neither, This poses a number of interesting questions: Where is this 'spooky' sounding Gnome Moor to be found and who is this, 'Risky' Anne Bier and why should we honour her? I'm not too sure if the word, play is correct, in the last line, I could have misheard that. It was getting late. |
