Subject: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Date: 25 Jan 07 - 11:58 AM Mudcat 2007 Alternative British Folk Awards - Nominations! 2007 sees the fifth year of the Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards. Not a prestigious event, but one which celebrates the past year in the world of cyber-assisted folk music. For all of the last 5 years (with the exception of 2006, when I couldn't be bothered to count the votes) a completely undemocratic and non-representational group of Mudcat members voted to pick a winner in each of the categories below. Your nominations are sought for this year's folk spectacular.
Nominations are welcomed under each of the following categories PUB/CLUB FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR
A number of SPECIAL AWARDS are also traditionally included in the ceremony (see below for examples). Your suggestions and nominations for any special categories will be considered by the committee.
The "Two In A Bar Award" for the best nonexistent Session/Singaround
please PM me with nominations etc. by 1st March 2007 so that voting can commence in good time for the awards to be published on the now-traditional date of 1st April.
Nominations ASAP please. |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Cats Date: 25 Jan 07 - 12:48 PM Could we have a category for 'song and ales' as well as festivals, please? |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: GUEST Date: 25 Jan 07 - 12:49 PM Er ... yes ... but what's one of them? |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Herga Kitty Date: 25 Jan 07 - 04:36 PM In chronological order, Fox and Hounds, Pennymoor, Wareham Wail, Whittlebury.... (is there still a Purse Caundle?) Kitty |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Date: 26 Jan 07 - 04:48 AM And where's Hilary when you need her? OK. I hereby nominate Hilary Ward (aka My Guru) for the horizontal award. No denials Hilary, I SAW YOU at the Ashwell Winter Sing. :-) Ian |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: The Barden of England Date: 26 Jan 07 - 04:54 AM Best Non Commercial Group/Duo just has to be - - Tone Deaf Leopard. The forefront of Glam Folk John Barden |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Cats Date: 26 Jan 07 - 05:08 AM A Song and Ale is a weekend of singing/music with no guests or concerts. You go to these to be with friends where you can sing to your hearts content. |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Surreysinger Date: 26 Jan 07 - 06:06 AM Kitty - if by Purse Caundle you mean the Dorset Singing weekends organised by John Waltham - yes, they still exist, but they're now held in Stourton Caundle.... roll on June!!!! :-) |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: skipy Date: 26 Jan 07 - 06:12 AM Best cross dresser award? Skipy |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: greg stephens Date: 26 Jan 07 - 07:06 AM I would like to nominate my own group, the Boat Band, for best Would-Be Commercial Group, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be a category at the moment. |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Date: 26 Jan 07 - 07:22 AM Just to try and explain something ... the categories labelled "non-commercial" are so we don't end up voting for people who are on the radio every week (no names ...). This is because these are ALTERNATIVE awards. Up and coming bands, down and out bands, any old bunch of drunken gits ... you can nominate what you choose. And in any category you like (I won't be nominating Ashwell Mummers as the best band though). ;-) Ian |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: My guru always said Date: 26 Jan 07 - 07:48 AM Hands up, I confess, I was there! But I did start sobering up around tea-time, honest.... The Song & Ale difference seems to be as far as I can see is that they're held mainly in one room with all involved. Usually plenty of good beer around somewhere as I recall - I just love them! In addition to Kitty's list there are also Forest Folk & Travelling Folk and I wouldn't miss a single one of them! Thanks for starting this up again IanC, will put my thinking cap on & send in some nominations, especially for the Horizontal Award *grin* |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Andy Jackson Date: 26 Jan 07 - 06:46 PM I'm with Skipy on the extra award for Blokes in Frocks, but then so is half the Anchor Middle Bar!! Not just at Sidmouth see!! Andy |

Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Richard Bridge Date: 26 Jan 07 - 07:12 PM Both best musician and horizontal - (you have to catch him just right to get the best of both worlds) - Jeff Cole formerly Andy Martin, formerly Andy George. - He's amateur, totally amazing clawhammer guitar player (mostly blues and country) and singer; and I've seen him drink a bottle of Southern Comfort for breakfast (not recently). Also both musician and horizontal (professional) - Jon Loomes (seen drinking PINTS of double vision, the killer Kenny Cramp cider (labelled 9% 'cos that's all Kenny was allowed to label it at, usually about 12 to 15%) at Ely two years ago). |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Richard Bridge Date: 26 Jan 07 - 07:14 PM Festival, prolly Miskin |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: SussexCarole Date: 26 Jan 07 - 07:16 PM Horizontal? Does that always have to mean ****ed. I would rather see that title go to the most laid back attitude! |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Richard Bridge Date: 26 Jan 07 - 07:19 PM Folk singer - that's hard because there are virtually none. Even if you include revivalists. Jon Loomes or Marian Button??? Or Tori Lang? Marian Button! |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Richard Atkins Date: 26 Jan 07 - 08:45 PM IanC (aca My Guru) nomination for horizontal award. Evening water & lime by the Pint and sang like a bird. There should be a sober up award then ! 8>) |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Cats Date: 27 Jan 07 - 05:26 AM Song and Ale - Has to be the Fox and Hounds but I am biased. |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Andy Jackson Date: 27 Jan 07 - 05:35 AM Oh allright then Cats, I'll vote for Miskin to reset the balance. |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Cats Date: 27 Jan 07 - 06:10 AM Well I'll vote for Miskin too. |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: bubblyrat Date: 27 Jan 07 - 06:17 AM I don"t get out much, but here goes !--- Best pub sess. regular----The Herschel Arms, Slough Best pub session,festival---The Bedford !!! Horizontal Award---Bill McKinnon,BBC ( Brakspeare"s Best Customer ) Best Festival---- Begins with "M" & involves a goat..! |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Date: 27 Jan 07 - 07:19 AM Hi Just to remind you that these are ALTERNATIVE awards so that it would be best to avoid nominating any of "the usual suspects". There are actually THOUSANDS of Folk Singers out there (still) ... they're just not getting paid for it and they mostly sing in sessions, singarounds, their local pub. I think the cross-dressing etc. is mainly covered under Folk Drama. ;-) Ian PS The Horizontal Award's getting quite a few nominations but it's worth remembering that we do let these people know they've won. For the sake of my embarrassment, perhaps you could check with them that they'd be happy to receive the award??? |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Date: 27 Jan 07 - 07:24 AM BTW ... any chance of getting this in front of the BBC do you think? We could take over the official event!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: bubblyrat Date: 27 Jan 07 - 07:59 AM There ought to be an award for Eccentricity !! I mean, there are some pretty strange characters out there. There"s the guy with the Cajun box who just plays two push-pull chords & sings something unintelligable----I saw him enter the melodeon competition at Sidmouth 3 or 4 years ago,it was incredibly funny and VERY sad both at the same time .Then there"s the bloke who turns up at sessions with the musical saw---I mean,if he"s not eccentric, then who is ??Collectively," Alhambra " are from another dimension( I think they are WONDERFUL !! )----Anybody who thinks that Pete Lister is "normal" is in line for an award themselves ! Of course,Alhambra are well -known, but not the others, maybe.? One of the regulars at the Seven Stars near Maidenhead is ,in my opinion ,quite potty, and as for the blind guy with the Keyboard who does parodies of popular songs in the Bedford Hotel---Well,he is amazingly, hilariously,BONKERS !!And what about that group from Portsmouth ,"APICELLA " (HaHa )who were at at Miskin 3 years ago ?? TOTALLY,WONDERFULLY, Strange !!! Does anybody else know of any other candidates ??? |

Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Richard Bridge Date: 27 Jan 07 - 08:56 AM Actually, the horizontal award could go the the least sexually exclusive, but alas I know of no suitable nominee. |

Looking at the other thread, Chas's should have read Chas' (shades of a Lizzie) Bit like the Mornigton Cresent game this, ain't it? Chas Well, I wouldn't want to argue with you on that point, Chas, although my understanding is that (apart from your particular case), either Chas' or Chas's is correct. And if you are being pedantic, the least you could do is spell "Mornington Crescent" correctly ;-) |

Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Cats Date: 04 Feb 07 - 05:47 AM I would like to suggest a Special Award for the Singers and Musicians at the Wellie in Boscastle. This would have been more appropriate last year but we didn't have an awards so lets go for it this year. After the flood in 2004 when Boscastle was devastated and the ground floor of the Wellie totally washed away, they decided that nothing was going to stop them singing there on a Wednesday night. Nothing did. Every week, without exception, they gathered at the Wellie amongst the rubble and mud, by the fires made from the pieces of wood from the flood, inside or out regardless of the weather ~ and sometimes that was horrendous rain and hail, or bitterly cold ~ and sang. Perhaps only for half an hour but they sang, making sure that the sessions would continue. The Wellie is fully open now and has been for about a year [hence last years award] and Boscastle is slowly recovering. The sessions never stopped. I do think that they deserve a mention for fortitude. |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Ruth Archer Date: 04 Feb 07 - 05:57 AM Well, clearly I think Loughborough is the best new festival, though others are free to disagree! Yours in comeradely competitiveness, Ruthie :-D |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Andy Jackson Date: 04 Feb 07 - 04:15 PM Hey Cats, I'm with you on that one.. There was a programme last night on the big eye in the corner about freak weather and of course it had a good bit about Boscastle. They interviewed a young resident female. In the background was a left handed acoustic guitar or two and Im sure a melodeon on the floor. I reckoned she was a folkie and later on they used a bit of her singing. Is she part of that intrepid bunch. Incidentally Jo Vosp. gave Jillie and I the tune Boscastle Breakdown, which we just love playing on our English connies. If I can play and cry at he same time we would love to play it in Boscastle for the regulars. Andy |

Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: GUEST,Jon Date: 26 Feb 07 - 04:38 AM If it's not too late and I know I'm biased, but I want to nominate Kathy Wallis in the best Folk Drama for her one woman performance of 'Spirit in the Storm - the True story of Joan Wytte.' I've seen her do it 4 or 5 times now, in places as diverse as Sidmouth Festival to the room where Joan's body was kept in the witchcraft museum for all those years, to a small local history group, and she just is magic. At the end of the performance she leaves everyone feeling peaceful but the emotional roller coaster she takes you on is something else. Absolutely stunning. Jon |

Nominations close by March 1st, with a possibly extension to the 4th in view of IanC getting away from it all. Then presumably we'll all be voting by PM to IanC until April 1st (significant date!!) - that right? Surely the Glamorous Grannie nomination will sneak in while Ian's away & we should be able to celebrate the win at Patti's party before Miskin - what a lot of celebrating there'll be!!! |

I ended up putting commas in my text line of votes PM'd to you, it looked completely unreadable without them!! ps. my CD was called 'A Toe in the Water', mostly just live recordings, and has been a very limited 'giveaway' to select recipients! |

Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Scrump Date: 14 Mar 07 - 06:39 AM Some of the nominations seem a bit difficult to understand. For example, what's "Non-commercial" about Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman? |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: skipy Date: 14 Mar 07 - 06:43 AM Miskin man, Frock off! Skipy |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Date: 14 Mar 07 - 08:10 AM If you don't agree with any of the nominations (I just collect 'em) just (1) Mention it here and (2) Don't vote for them :-) |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Scrump Date: 14 Mar 07 - 08:37 AM I didn't say I disagreed with the nominations, but I was just wondering what the criteria were for an artist to be "non-commercial". If it means they don't get paid, then that would eliminate quite a few of the nominations for that category, including KR & SL, to my knowledge. |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Date: 14 Mar 07 - 09:31 AM Criterion is whatever the person nominating them thinks it is. :-) |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: Scrump Date: 14 Mar 07 - 09:48 AM So it seems I could have nominated Show of Hands for non-commercial duo then, and it would have been accepted. Damn, too late :-) |
Subject: RE: Alternative British Folk Awards 2007 From: IanC Date: 14 Mar 07 - 10:03 AM Scrump Yes you could have, but IN ALL CONSCIENCE nobody would havew voted for them. You'll see. ;-) |

I would expect all nominators to vote. Since you do it by PM, if you vote twice, I'll know. Doesn't count (unless it's a changed vote). Only PM'd votes count. :-) |
