Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: Hamish Date: 30 Jan 07 - 09:22 AM Well they were on Top Form in Brighton last night. One of THE all-time best gigs. And the sudience were really up for it, too. Totally mental. Brilliant! Although I do have a few aches and pains and a croaky throat this morning. |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: Mr Fox Date: 30 Jan 07 - 07:22 AM Not until they learn to all play the same tune at the same time. |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: The Borchester Echo Date: 29 Jan 07 - 06:01 PM Bellowhead's very first gig was a private wedding ceilidh, a final rehearsal before their public launch at the first Oxford Festival in 2004, |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: Lady Nancy Date: 29 Jan 07 - 05:48 PM Hi everyone. Here's a first. Bellowhead are playing for a CEILIDH -look at their web site for details: If this doesnt work I'm sorry.... Its all pretty sparse information right now, but it is 21st June (Summer Solstice) in Yorkshire.... LN |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: Dave Earl Date: 29 Jan 07 - 11:20 AM The Brighton Komedia say the show tonight is sold out. Cos I woke up to the fact too late I am now on the list for the outside chance of punters having to cancel. Fingers crossed. Dave |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: GUEST,Chris Date: 29 Jan 07 - 08:22 AM Bellowhead are my kids way into folk music like Steeleye were for me 35 years ago. Were going to see them tonight at Brighton. They got my vote!!! |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: Ruth Archer Date: 28 Jan 07 - 07:20 AM Oh - Barely Works! Their version of Byker Hill can still be heard blaring out of my car windows in less circumspect moments... The wierd thing for me is the songs that Spiers and boden covered so well, that are less effective when covered by bellowhead - Courting too Slow being a good example. Somehow the sum is less than the total of its parts on those occasions... |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: GUEST,Wayne Date: 28 Jan 07 - 07:16 AM Burlesque is a desperately inconsistent c.d.. When it's good - the opening three tracks, Fire Marengo - it's brilliant. When it's poor -Flash Company, Courting Too Slow, Death and the Lady - it borders on the unlistenable. Unlike Spiers & Boden albums (which are all superb) there is just not enough substance to justify a positive vote. The Barely Works did it far better a decade and a half ago. However.... A friend of mine who doesn't like folk music very much (once, when he called round and I was listening to Spiers & Boden, ironically enough, he said "You're still listening to that fucking tribal shite, then!")regards it as one of the best albums he's ever heard. So what do I know? Guess I'll pop down to Pontardawe on Saturday and see if they're any better live! Diolch Wayne |

Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: lilly Date: 27 Jan 07 - 03:41 PM Bellowhead, great! Showing the world that English music is fun ! |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: Fiona Date: 27 Jan 07 - 08:47 AM From looking at the list of past nominees, English music has featured in the World Music Awards from the start. In 2002 the Afrocelts (who are at least half English) won the (then) Listeners Award, other nominees that year included the Boat Band and Kathryn Tickell. At that time listeners were actually allowed to nominate, now the high heid yins of WOMEX provide the lists for the public vote most years seem to include at least some English folk (eg E & M Carthy, Andrew Cronshaw). However with the exception of Cara Dillon there are no Irish artists and not a single Scot that I can see. hmmmm... fx |

Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: Hamish Date: 26 Jan 07 - 03:49 PM Got my ticket for their gig on Monday in Brighton ~8^) |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: GUEST,Terry McDonald Date: 26 Jan 07 - 02:46 PM Ooops - hit something strange, rather than the mouse! I was going to say - as a non-Scot myself, I think that's very nice of you Giok. |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: GUEST,Terry McDonald Date: 26 Jan 07 - 02:44 PM |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: John MacKenzie Date: 26 Jan 07 - 02:34 PM That I agree with, and I say that as a Scot too ¦¬] Giok |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: The Borchester Echo Date: 26 Jan 07 - 02:24 PM Didn't say that. I just think it's good that R3 at least recognises that England is part of the world, and that English music should be considered on a par with all other musics. |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: John MacKenzie Date: 26 Jan 07 - 02:20 PM I don't agree that the nationality of a performer is sufficient excuse to support them, whether you like what they do or not. Giok |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: The Borchester Echo Date: 26 Jan 07 - 02:12 PM Yeah, right. But it's what people do, Giok. It's still a step forward that an English band is up for such an award. |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: John MacKenzie Date: 26 Jan 07 - 02:07 PM I replied thus because the poster made the arrogant assumption that all Mudcatters share his/her taste. It is more usual if you want people to support you to say, 'If you too like xxxxxx, please log onto this site, and vote for them.' The perpetual arrogance of the besotted is no excuse for lack of consideration for the tastes of others. Giok |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: The Borchester Echo Date: 26 Jan 07 - 01:53 PM There might be marginally more deserving candidates than Bellowhead (nominated ever such a long time ago) such as Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate or K'naan. Bur what I think is totally wonderful is that English music is at last being considered as part of the world. For that reason, voting for Bellowhead is a Good Thing. 'Tis churlish to reply with just 'no'. |
Subject: RE: Vote for Bellowhead From: John MacKenzie Date: 26 Jan 07 - 12:42 PM No |
Subject: Vote for Bellowhead From: Chris Cole Date: 26 Jan 07 - 12:41 PM Have just received an update email from John "Squeezy" Spiers in which he advises that Bellowhead's Burlesque has been nominated for 2007 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music Audience Award. I noticed that no-one has added a review comment for their Burlesque album - perhaps some wordsmiths out their would like to lend some support for our boys. All the other contenders have suppotive comments, so let's help the chaps out. I know Burlesque may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is great to see the lads in the list of nominees.
