The wierd thing for me is the songs that Spiers and boden covered so well, that are less effective when covered by bellowhead - Courting too Slow being a good example. Somehow the sum is less than the total of its parts on those occasions... |

When it's poor -Flash Company, Courting Too Slow, Death and the Lady - it borders on the unlistenable. Unlike Spiers & Boden albums (which are all superb) there is just not enough substance to justify a positive vote. The Barely Works did it far better a decade and a half ago. However.... A friend of mine who doesn't like folk music very much (once,when he called round and I was listening to Spiers & Boden, ironically enough, he said "You're still listening to that fucking tribal shite, then!")regards it as one of the best albums he's ever heard. So what do I know? Guess I'll pop down to Pontardawe on Saturday and see if they're any better live! Diolch Wayne |

In 2002 the Afrocelts (who are at least half English) won the (then) Listeners Award, other nominees that year included the Boat Band and Kathryn Tickell. At that time listeners were actually allowed to nominate, now the high heid yins of WOMEX provide the lists for the public vote most years seem to include at least some English folk (eg E & M Carthy, Andrew Cronshaw). However with the exception of Cara Dillon there are no Irish artists and not a single Scot that I can see. hmmmm... fx |

Bur what I think is totally wonderful is that English music is at last being considered as part of the world. For that reason, voting for Bellowhead is a Good Thing. 'Tis churlish to reply with just 'no'. |

Subject: Vote for Bellowhead From: Chris Cole Date: 26 Jan 07 - 12:41 PM Have just received an update email from John "Squeezy" Spiers in which he advises that Bellowhead's Burlesque has been nominated for 2007 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music Audience Award. I noticed that no-one has added a review comment for their Burlesque album - perhaps some wordsmiths out their would like to lend some support for our boys. All the other contenders have suppotive comments, so let's help the chaps out. I know Burlesque may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is great to see the lads in the list of nominees.
