Does anyone know where this air is printed other than in R A Smith's Scottish Minstrel, Vol lV? There is so much disinformation regarding the tunes set for The Braes o' Balquhidder and I am trying to unravel it. When Normal Buchan produced his 101 Scottish songs (1962) he told me the tune he used for the Braes.. was The Three Carles but I now know that this is incorrect, he actually used Smith's first setting which was a simple variation of the first three bars of the old tune called The Braes of Balquhidder which I have from 1740. Also, Hamish Henderson wrote the sleeve notes for John MacDonald's Topic LP (1974) and said he sang the air The Three Carles but MacDonald actually sang McPeake's tune to Will ye go Lassie, Go! How Hamish could make that mistake I don't know.
