Subject: BS: What's the first thing you unpack?
From: Phot
Date: 27 Jan 07 - 04:18 AM

The beautiful Pixie and I have just bought our first place together, it's just a small one bedroom flat, but you have to start somewhere! We have a bit of decorating to do, and a friend is fitting a new carpet in the bedroom, so with luck us and the cats will be settled in by this evening. So I was wondering if it was traditional to unpack anything first to bring good luck, or what anyones preferances are?

Time to get on with the painting, moving, carpet laying, getting four cats in the pet carriers! (Help!!)

Wassail!! Chris.

Hi Chris and Pixie, one thing I've seen is to burn a candle at the Old Place(to absorb the spirit)some say it should be the last thing you move, then extinguish it and then re-light it at the new place to provide continuity and to release the "spirit of home".

Phot & Pixie - congratulations on getting a place together.

I would add to Micca's comment by saying burn some incense throughout the new home - lavender for cleansing out old energy, sandalwood for protection. Or if you don't like incense, rub wooden surfaces with lavender oil or sandalwood oil for a similar effect. When I move into a new home, I rub lavender oil through the kitchen cupboards and across the front and back doorways - it keeps insects away!

Buy new sheets for the bed and a beautiful new bedspread with the colours of your love in it!

first thing I did 23 years ago was to put a chair on the back porch and stare at my new backyard....then maybe I got the 1 year old out of the car seat...*grin*....(well, maybe I have that backwards)......

I used to move a LOT, and for many years, it was a special lamp I bought in an antique shop in 1959, No one was allowed to move it but me.

I moved around a lot too, but it was always my furry pillow and my radio that were unpacked first. In many cases, I never got to unpack everything but left it in the box to move on the next time.

When we got this house, it was the kettle, tea, coffee, mugs and spoons (which were the last things to be packed up), two cats and a litter tray, their bowls and a big sign saying 'keep out' for the door of the room they were shut in.

We had no electricity thanks to the previous owners taking the main fuse with them, so we didn't get to make tea...

Bed and bedding were the next things, and then all of Limpit's necessaries - cot, clothes, changing stuff.

I did Micca's suggestion when I moved into my new place. I had a candle lit while I packed up my stuff and it was the first thing I unpacked in my new home. We also burnt cleansing incense throughout the house. The next night we did a ritual for protection and house blessing.

After that.....we unpacked the cups and kettle and had a cup of tea. Now normally that would have been a gin but that will have to wait anther 3 and a half months!!

Congratulations Chris and Fiona. May you make many happy memories in your new home.

Love Khatt x

A few friends and I helped a friend move into her new place with her fiance a few years ago. After we got all their stuff up the three flights of stairs into the apartment, before she started opening boxes, she pulled out the cooler full of beer for us. I've always loved her.

He, however, dug out his remote-control toy car and began driving it around from room to room. What a nerd. She was pretty embarassed and we consoled her and asked if she was sure she wanted to marry him.

When I moved out of my old house and into my new, I left vases full of irises in a couple of rooms, and a cake in the kitchen, for the new owner. And the people who sold me this house left vases of flowers in every room and a cake in the kitchen!

It's probably a little late for this, but unpack the bookcases, dressers, and other furniture into the new place first, then the boxes that you'll need to unpack into the bookcases and dressers. (That was a mistake I only needed to make once.)
My father told me that you should always get a new broom for a new dwelling.
I recall hearing at the National Storytelling Festival that when you move into a new place, you should put a penny in each corner of each room, and I remember seeing nods of agreement in the audience. This would be a southern US tradition, as far as I know, and I haven't run into it at any other time. If your new place is anything like most of the places I've lived, you could go broke on this one.
May your move go smoothly.

If you move alot, invest in a good carpet that will last a lifetime.

When you move to a new place, as soon as the carpet is on the floor, you feel like you are home. Everything else is extra.

Ok so Micca got there first. Definitley the candle from the old house / houses. Then you talk to whoever or whatever is still there to explain that they are still welcome in your home and you are there to share it with them.
Then, the cat food for the cats, their blankets, toys etc, then your own stuff including the toilet roll and spare light bulbs.
Congrats to both of you. Hope to see you soon and don't forget I still have some 16th century plasterwork on my ceiling for you to photograph and a fabulous broadleaf woodland at the bottom of the lane. PM me with your new address. love Kathy & Jon, Bathsheba and Isolde xx

Coffee, electric kettle, mugs, snack food...

...and at the bottom of the box we found two Jimmy Shand LPs. No player unpacked, of course.

Sure it does, it just depends on what your standards are. Our carpet looked like crap when we moved in seventeen years ago, but we had dogs so we never bothered to replace it. We just discourage guests from crawling around on the floor.

Traditionally, you should unpack the butter first, to smear on the cat's feet. Theoretically (i.e. traditionally) by the time they lick it off, they feel at home.

Then unpack the sticking plaster and carpet cleaner. This is not traditional, just sensible.

When I moved into this house I'd given our apartment a month's notice but that month wasn't enough to have the house ready (I had a carpenter remodeling several things). First thing I moved in here was a new refrigerator, purchased at a great savings when a Sears near me was closing to relocate.

"Where can I put this until I move in? Oh, wait! I have the house!"

The same with the new washer and dryer (what luxuries!), they also were moved in before I did. I gradually brought over stuff from the apartment, a table and a couple of chairs, cleaning supplies, a tea kettle, cups. We had all of the ancient wall-to-wall carpet and padding pulled up and it was a concrete floor until I got the tile down in about 2/3 of the house (put it down myself - about 1500sf of it!). So I brought in plastic tarps and cots and a bed and our first few nights, maybe weeks, we all slept in one room on the cot or mattresses on the plastic. I did the floor and the paint in the front corner bedroom first and moved the kids in there. I had a galvanized tub in one bathroom for baths and gradually got the essentials in--finished the surround in the hall bathroom, and finished putting in the back splash in the kitchen. From there it was a matter of figuring out which room was going to be easiest to work on at any given time. I slept on a futon in various rooms as I was moving furniture to work in others. It all seems quite distant now, when we had flip flops and slippers handy for when we got out of bed for walking on those dusty concrete floors. Of quick baths in the metal tub on the floor because the regular tub was filled with boxes of tile that would go on the wall. I didn't have any kind of television cable for almost a year, my company when I worked was the radio and the slight echo in empty rooms.

The house is full now, the ammenities are in place, but it is nice to have known the house in those early days, it makes us appreciate it so much more.

I'll find out on Friday when we move.

Personally I suspect it'll either be the guitars or the PC for me. For Emma, probably the kettle. Mind you, there's pretty good odds on the bogroll being somewhere well up there too.
