In another thread someone said "If I had to move somewhere, Canada or Australia would be my first choices..." - and it occurs to me that might be a interesting opening for speculative discussion to throw around, and better in a new thread that in one that's already got a direction of its own.

I suspect those would be quite popular choices for English speakers generally. Along with New Zealand and Ireland. The USA sounds a bit heavy and bad-tempered going by the tone of the threads here. And the UK? Perhaps a bit gloomy, by the same measure.

Mind you, set aside the language hassles and it'd be Italy or France for me. Though for music Newfoundland might be a close second to Ireland...

On our first (& to date only) visit there,my wife & I both fell in love with British Columbia, if we absolutely had to relocate it would emphatically be first choice.
Favoured European locations would be Crete,Estepona (Spain) or Amsterdam.
In Britain York (for its beauty)or Liverpool (for its people)

Three yeasr ago, if asked this question, I would have chosen Italy. I spent some wonderful times there and just felt, of all the countries that I had visited, that that was the one that would suit me best.

Then I moved somewhere. Maine. Similar to the UK but more so. There are differences but they make for interest and it certainly isn't heavy or bad tempered here in the most north easterly of the states. Beside which, there's Maine lobster and Maine shrimp, two very good reasons for living here. Right now the temperature is at about 20F, warmer than yesterday when it didn't get much above zero, but it's a dry cold and so more bearable.

Now, if I could get rid of the mosquitoes in the summer..........

Five years ago I narrowed it down to Maine or Alaska. Personal commitments kept me on the east coast but Ketchican, Alaska calls me.

Transylvania...have you heard the fiddle music that the local Mr average plays. Haunting music...and of course property prices are so cheap and living costs are negligible. Last time I went..six of us went to a top class restaurant..we all had starters, main courses..with which you get bread rolls and side salad as standard..deserts and two drinks each.....the whole bill came to less than £18 or around $35.
My pension would make me one of the rich guys there as their average pensions are around £30 pcm.

I'll speak up for Maine ... great state (for a state in the U.S.A), and great people Mainers are. I'd live there without hesitation if I had to.

For years I have had an inner calling for New Zealand. My aunt married a 'kiwi' andher quality of life is better over there, than here.

She tried to reintergrate into England some years back, but she couldn't cope with how bad it had become. Society had changed in her opinion for the worse. Her husbands health also suffered so badly, that they had no choice but to go back home to New Zealand.

I love the look of Australia but realistically, I am too fair of skin, and get quite swollen with fluid retention in British summers, so that place would be one to visit, but not for me.

New Zealand calls me. I have never been, but I am drawn to the place. That would be my choice, and I haven't waivered from it for the last 15 years.

For a long while I had my eye on an old spa town in the French Pyrenes, or somewhere high in the Aosta valley, but as age strikes harder they look less like a practical proposition.

I've not visited Portugal, though I hear good things from those who have, and of course they are one of our oldest allies. Belgium has some appeal, but I might be worrying about the neighbours.

Casting the eye further afield I would certainly look at New Zealand and Canada.

Of course when I count how many of my acquaintances say they intend to retire to Whitby I just thank goodness I got here first, cos I'm not sure where we're all going to fit in.

There are things about Australia that lure me...music, space, wine, nice people...and absolute heaven for wood turners & collectors. But there are areas of the US I could stand pretty well, if I wasn't right in a city...Washington/Oregon...parts of Montana/Idaho.

NOT the deep south...I've visited.

I"d live in a barn-conversion there,and have a flat,or preferably a houseboat,in Amsterdam.Then,when I was in the capital,I could join the old blokes who look after and restore the old steamers & lifeboats etc. at the Maritime Museum ----Heaven !!

I'm happy to live in Vancouver but would certainly consider a move Languedoc (France), Ireland, Mazatlan(el Centro) or New Zealand.

I was born in the U.S.A. but avoid it as much as possible. Its too mean-spirited and depressing.

I love the Boston area, a born & bred Bostonian. The music is as thick as one could hope for. If I could only manage to take in more of it. I'd say San Francisco would run me a close second, got to be near the ocean & music & that's another place where it's thick as you can get. But my heart would be somewhere in the South Pacific floating between the islands bitching about there being not enough folk music within a thousand mile (I got rock fever on Hawaii, though there was a little music). So maybe some day I'll get to New Zealand & Australia to see what I've been missing & then maybe I can make a real choice. Oh, I think I'd try the UK too, cause it seems that UKer's don't have to travel far for music or ocean & all the ones I've met so far would make great neighbors. I don't know about being a welcomed trouble maker though. The weather wouldn't be that much of an improvment either, neither would Ireland though the singer's clubs sure make it attractive & I guess it's green enough there but still it'd be to long of a hike to the ocean.

Maine, folks are real nice but you gotta have ice water for blood, I drive up there just to see those buggers freeze, you can actually watch songs crystalize as they open their mouths to sing, I'd rather live in Canada or Alaska (not bad places, just not near as cold). Just look & listen to Kendoll next time he sings, he's been up there so long (go ahead & ask, how long?) he had to go to see Utah (& listening to that bugger would give a moose a brain freeze) just to thaw out his throat so he could talk & when he got back home they had to refreeze his ear so he could sing all the different parts that he thought he was hearing. Now that's one hell of a man & that's how they grow them up there so if ya think you can transplant yourself there, I'll tell you there's only been 1 New Yorker & 2 Brits so far that have been successful that I know of & there all crazy. You'd be better off in the South Pacific with no music at all.

A lot of different places have a lot of differect things to recommend them. Except Australia. Great scenery, lovely people (mostly), but who would want to live in a spot that has more deadly critters than anywhere else in the world?

If I had to move it'd probably be to Alberta, because it's fairly close.

But I like it fine right here. Decent people, open spaces, decent cost-of-living, decent medical care (and yes, the folks here DO take care of those who can't afford it, assuming they ask for help). There are a certain percentage of jerks, but I don't think the jerk-per-square-foot ratio is any higher than elsewhere.

Perfectly happy in Texas except for the summers and the fire ants. I do well in the South and the West; I've spent just enough time in the Northeast to know I'll never be at home there even if it's a nice place to visit. I've got a northern limit of Missouri and Northeastern limit of Tennessee, though. And I'd probably stay out of Florida because of the hurricanes.

I'd consider going back to Norway if I could find a reason. Nice geography, not too many people, expensive but pedestrian-friendly.

I would have a place in the Highlands of Scotland; maybe a place in Nova Scotia, and Vancouver, BUT climate-wise, my brother tells me I would be really happy in Monterey, California, though I think it would be too dry. I like rain, frequent rain and fog. I wouldn't mind going back to New England if it weren't for the fleas and ticks. There are places I know I would love in England, Wales, Ireland. Anywhere with more of a trad. music community would be nice! Hmmm...going to have to think on this some more.

Ya spaw, & they tell me they can't understand me when I speak. Christ, their teeth shatter when they chatter outside in the summer unless they've been tarred by tabacco at a young age & then their skin's been picked clean by the the fall rolls around. It's no wonder ya can't understand. To top it all off they then go mixing it up with more intellegant Brit's & that New Yorker & what happens to the "downeast accent' when that happens, go figure. Well at least they're creating some understandable music up there for a change.

If I had to move somewhere -- well, I'M (personallhy) there. When I moved to Maine (yeah, these very many years ago....) I finally stopped talking about 'going home' and meaning England.......Maine is home and it is good. Calm, peaceful, decent people, decent food just TOO BLOODY COLD but only on occasions. Maine is wonderful -- come on up and visit -- Sinsull lhas tons of room and I can take the spillovers........ of course, it helps to have a teeny weeny home in England that one can plan on retiring to when one is old and gray (gray-er perhaps...) for at least half the year......

I'm happy where I am, although I really dream of living right down by the sea shore, albeit still in Scotland.
I would love to tour the USA and Australia in a big camper van, I want to visit Japan, and I want to cruise the South Seas in my own boat.
Then I'd like to come back home to a Scotland with quicker and cheaper transport links. It's the only drawback to living up here, that I'm so far away from most folk festivals, and I have no local folk club to go to.

I'm very fond of certain areas of northern England and would love to live in the Arnside and Silverdale area by Morecambe Bay. Unfortunately, it's probably too expensive for me now - like every other pleasant rural area in our increasingly over-crowded island.
My favourite country in mainland Europe is Bulgaria. This is no reflection on the Bulgarian people but I can't imagine moving there permanently. The prospect of being old and alone in a country where you have an incomplete grasp of the language (I'm very bad at foriegn languages!) is quite scary!

fascinating question. Of course I guess we can all fantisize about favorite holiday spots, but the reality of LIVING there is probaboly quite a bit different.

Jayne and I have often thought of living where it is rainy and gloomy and overcast, but if we actually did I am sure it would lose some of its romantic appeal. Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic stands out as a place I think would suit me, as well as Rovinj, Croatia. Seattle, Quebec City, San Frnancisco. Keswick, in the lake district, Ullapool, Scotland, Asheville, NOrth Carolina, these are a few that leap out as places I have fantisized.

Well I like it fine right here in Oz - even with all the critters. Somehow we all seem to co-exist. We don't really lose that many people to crocodiles, sharks, blue-ringed octopi and funnel-web spiders, and a good electric fence will keep away most of the bunyips and drop-bears ;-)

However, if I had to chose another place to live, it would be France - Paris in particular. My brother lives there, so I have visited three times. the first time I visited was only for a few weeks, but when I came back, I had a strong feeling of - well - homesickness! it wasn't just that I missed my brother, although I certainly did - it was the place I missed.

The food and wine is wonderful (nothing wrong with our wine either, just quietly) and there is something about the lifestyle and atmosphere that I love. Other parts of France that I have been to are equally enticing, and despite disparaging comments I have heard about the French being arrogant, that has not been my experience at all. I would certainly have to brush up my French though.

I've always had a hankering for South Dakota where there are no distractions, no nothing for miles around except field of stunted wheat. One could get a lot done there. I could really finally learn how to master the concertina.

Ethiopia might be a close second, but I've lived there!

Years and years ago, when my husband and I were living in Indiana (long story) - we shortlisted placed we would like to live and eventually decided on Boston or Portland Maine. We drove out to see the cities - drove through the night as we could not afford a motel (remember those days.......?). We went to visit the law school in Boston and no one was kind to us (to say the least) -- we drove up to Maine and visited the law school here and everyone was so welcoming..........! It was a no brainer to decide to live here and we have never regretted it.

However (point of thread) my husband is convinced that Maine winters are a story put out by the state to keep the tourists away in the winter-- he argues ( I think rightly) that it is no colder here than many places - try Indiana) but - because of the legend -- THERE ARE NO TOURISTS HERE IN THE WINTER........

I might try Totnes (Devon SW England). My late wife and daughter passed through there about 5 years ago and came back raving about it - allegedly like a time warp back to 1967.

I do like Southern Spain, and if I were there I reckon I'd get the language reasonably quickly, and I'm told their health service is good. But I'd miss English folk music.

I'd like to try NZ.

I lived in OZ when I was a kid, but I think it's getting a bit too Pacific Rim for me now. I'd like to try the middle (the bit with lots of red earth and not a lot else) but driving 500 miles to meet the next door neighbour could be a bit wearing (and, shit, he might turn out to be a Mel Gibson clone).

What I really need is a good lottery win. Pretty much anywhere would be nice with loadsamoney and the experimenting would be fun. I'd like to see more USA. There is nothing in the world like a late 60s or early 70s V8 muscle car (although some of the Europeans with the yank engines, like a Facel III, are nice too). I've liked California the few times I've been there, but the political correctness and antismoking (even though I don't smoke) and emission control stuff would drive me wild. But there again I'd have to learn Spanish again soon (grin) - oh and put up with that Austrian corporal you now have running things out there (now that's a scary thought) and the old fascist from Santa Barbera.

Singapore is lively (apart from the politics) but too crowded.

I moved twice from my English Midlands home, once to Plymouth,(yes, of course England) for two years, until I couldn't stand the poor wages any more, and then (finally?) to Auckland, New Zealand, where the remuneration is slightly better, but nothing to boast about. I recommend both places for lifestyle, but don't come for the money. NZ has a total population of just over 4 million people.

Citizenship of NZ carries the (reciprocal) advantage of right-of-residence in Australia, another top country, and of course, you never lose right of residence in your original country, if that happens to be Britain. And this means nowadays the European Union, I believe. So it isn't THAT big a commitment. Nothing like as big as getting married, for instance.

When the weather gets a bit better I hope to be making regular trips up the M6 to Arnside/Silverdale and I will be looking at the brickwork with renewed interest!

I 'discovered' this area, for myself, in about 1983. I am an amateur botanist and first read about the area through J.E.Lousley's book, 'Wild Flowers of Chalk and Limestone', in the Collins New Naturalist series. I booked a fortnight's holiday up there and have been hooked ever since. For me there is very little to beat coming off the motorway, on a nice sunny day in May or June, and into that sublime landscape of neat hedges, coppiced woods and pale grey limestone. If you know where to look there are Wild Daffodils, Green Winged Orchids, Dark-red Helleborines, Fly Orchids, Hellebores, Birds-eye Primroses, Hard Shield Ferns etc., etc., and I add new photographs to my collection every year (well, such things please me!).
I introduced a mate of mine to the area a few years ago and, because he is self-employed, and can live anywhere, he bought a flat in Arnside overlooking the Kent Estuary (bastard!!).
I've probably left it too late - but never mind, it's only about an hour up the motorway from where I live in South Manchester.

There are lots of places I think I'd like to live in, but I suspect if I lived there, I'd still want to live somewhere else. I think you take wherever you live for granted, and always think the grass is greener on the other side.

If I won the lottery, I wouldn't buy homes in the places I like, but I'd be free to go and travel wherever I wanted, without worrying about the cost.

Until then, I'll stay right where I am, boring as that may seem.

Out of the city would be a good start. Never really settled in the smoke. I love to live somewhere with rolling hills, lots of greenery, trees, near the ocean if possible but not too crowded. Maybe one day we'll get there. My parents live in the highlands of Scotland and it's beautiful but a bit too isolated for me, but a beautiful and relaxing place to to visit. Never really thought of moving to another country. Perhaps its someting to think about!!

Of course our old Maine buddy Brett (Naemanson) actually moved to Guam in the middle of the Pacific and he's still there. He does occasionally complain about the rain and humidity there but he doesn't seem to miss our winters.

Now one of my nieces in Brooklyn, New York, finally made a big move. She moved from one zip code to another, about 4 blocks to Atlantic Avenue from State Street. Wonders never cease!

I was born in a place that's damn near perfect (Maine) so why would I want to leave? I lived in northern Vermont for a spell and that was pretty nice, too, but very much like home (minus the ocean, a-course)I think I'll stay right here.

well last time it was Turkey!!!!! Sourthern Spain would be good but we'd be useless at the expat thing and would want to integrate as much as possible.

OK, then, I'd move nearer to the pub in the same village, in a better house, but not so near the pub as to be kept awake by the drinkers :-)
