I heard this song and I would reallllllly like to know the name of the song and the artists whos sings it. This is what I remeber from the lyrics:

The song is "It Should Have Been Me" originally done by Memphis Curtis in the '50's, but covered (quite well) by Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen in the '70's. Another fine version from this decade is by the outstanding harmonica/guitar duo Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan.
