Subject: add: The Galway Hooker (Martin Gallen?)

Ah, this request has been unanswered since 2007. Somebody from Germany emailed the lyrics to Max, who sent them on to me. Here they are - any corrections?

GALWAY HOOKER
(composed by Martin Gallen)

Near the land of Grainne Mhaol
The mighty Galway Hookers sail
At Claddagh, Carna and Galway Bay
They bring their cargo night and day

CHORUS
Swaying to the left and swaying to the right
There’s a hooker on the seas tonight
There’ll be drink and dancin at the Ceili Mor
When the hooker’s cargo comes ashore

With pitch –black stern and crimson sail
These vessels carry news and tales
To Inis Mean and Inis Thiar
Where people gather at the pier
CHORUS

With turf and stout they’re laden down
And workers coming from the towns
Land ahoy we’re drawing near
Sights of friends and families dear
CHORUS

From the city of the tribes
Across the Maine to Aran’s isles
Their name remains a burning light
For every traveller’s homeward flight
CHORUS

I found YouTube playlists for two albums by Arcanadh but no "Galway Hooker." Can anybody find a recording of the song?

Here's a rather nice video of a Galway hooker race. Those mainsails are huge!

Clint, if the group is ok with sharing it publicly, highlight the text and then copy and paste it here.

If it's a format where you can't copy and paste the text, you would have to keep the text open in one tab and type it out in another.

Hi Noreen,
it looks like this thread has been going on for 13 years now.Wouldn´t it be more constructive to contact either Martin Gallen or Colm Breathnach via Facebook and ask them to post the lyrics ? I´m not a member, but I could ask a friend of mine.Let´s go for it instead of filling gaps how it might be right.

Just for clarity, the song is "The Galway Hooker" by Arcanadh.

You can listen to a sample here. The website allows you to create a free account, but apparently you can add a library card to listen to it? I'm not Dutch so I doubt it would work for me.

You can buy the CD here

Can't find anything more.

Thanks.

A friend asked me to write out the lyrics, but I only get 90 % of what he´s singing.I´m sure the text must be somewhere in writing ?!

The howker, or hooker was a small merchant ship used in the coastal waters of northern Europe.

It is track one of a cd, "Irish Folk Festival- Tribute to the Galway Hooker Boats," MMCD 1037.
Anyone have this disc?

As far as I can gather the song is about the important role the hookers played along the Irish west coast, including the Arans. Inishmaan and Inisheer also figure in the text.

I take it this is a song about a boat?

On a (German) CD "The Irish Folk Festival 2006 / Tribute to the Galway Hooker Boats" I found a version of "The Galway Hooker" sung by Colm Breathnach of Arcanadh. Unfortunately, the CD did not contain the lyrics, and Colm's singing is so blurred that it left me helpless as far as a meaningful text is concerned. All I could make out with at least some reliability was the chorus:

"Swinging to the left and swinging to the right
There's a hooker on the seas tonight
There'll be drinking, dancing at the ceilidh mor
When the hooker's cargo comes ashore"

Is there anybody out there who can supply the verses? Please?
