Subject: Looking for specific miner song
From: Snoozer
Date: 30 Jan 07 - 06:16 AM

I received the following question via email and, although there's not much to go on, I thought the collective wisdom of Mudcat might be able to help.

I heard a song the other day by a Irish (maybe he was from Scotland) singer, the song was about a young man who used to stand tall but after working in the mines he was a bent man, the singer had a very heavy brogue and his last name started with a B.
That's all I know and I would really like to find out who sang this song.

Thanks,
Snoozer

Crooked Jack? It's in the DT. Put the title in the search box (top right of the page).

I was tall and true almost six foot two
Till they broke me across the back
By the name I'm known, it is not my own
For they call me crooked Jack

This one came straight to mind. Is this the one you are looking for? I can only remember the chorus but I'm sure others will know the song

It's in the Digital Tradition HERE . Written by Dominic Behan? Tune is a version "The Star of the County Down" - but then, isn't everything?!

Regards

If you can get hold of an old Anne Byrne recording..she does it great.

There is another song I would like to find..someone told me what it was before but now I forget.

Someone worked in the mines and got hunchbacked from it and went to work in the woods, where they made fun of him for not being a great tree chopper. So one day there was a terrible fire and he grabs a shovel I think and digs a trench perhaps and saves them...it was really a powerful song. mg
