BTw no threats to your personal safety but I would prefer to conduct my conversations on here with people who have the decency to say who they are.
Or by PM and as anonymous guest you cant be in reciept of a pm.
Therefore the thread becomes contaminated by your silly posts instead of as I was requested to put on mudcat a bit of a heads up for those who are interested in having a goodtime.

Hi Tim, grand job keeping this thread going.
Sadly Hissyfit will not make it to Staithes as we'll be with Alio at Saddleworth.....but I'm sure you'll have another great long weekend.
Saw/heard Carol at Beverley and Cleckheaton.
Who ever goes to Staithes - I hope y'all have fun.

So Tim the Twangler is your real name?

I have refrained from sinking to your level of hurling insults instead of answering questions.

I ask again but dont expect an answer from someone whose sole ambition is to drop names into the debate - WHAT IS A PROPER SINGER??? (What is silly about this question - you raised the term?)

I cannot be bothered any more, I'll leave the thread to you & all the people who keep saying 'its great but I'm not going'.

Hi TIM
sorry...but I'll be at Saddleworth too!!
"Non proper singer".....you really do seem to have missed the point.
By referring to "proper" singers Tim is being a litle over modest and self-effacing about his own talents as a singer/songwriter. His comments to Carol are just banter among friends. Hope you get a chance to meet Tim at Staithes and realise what a nice ,easy going fellow he is.

Old Git - - - I think its you have missed the point!

I have heard & sung with Tim!

I also thought he was a nice easy going guy but HE is the one throwing insults not me.

My point is that there were NO SUPERSTARS at the festival. Tim was not 'the best', Carol (?) was not 'the best, I was not 'the best'.

It is not a competition but a friendly singaround.
That is Tonys aim & he has hit it spot on.
To have someone (anyone) to keep harping on about 1 performer in this thread is IMO not in the spirit of this weekend.

I still would like a definition of 'proper' singers!

Time to draw a line under any negative issues already aired. As i am crap with computers i asked Tim to put this on mudcat. Thanks Tim for starting it and to all the other contributors, I am graetful for the input every one has made to this event. Might be a good idea to focus on the positve issues mentioned, like.......every one makes a contributoin to the success of this event. It was always my intention to make ALL types of accoustic music welcome. There have been a few cock ups like the landlord of the captain Cook booking the Jazz band. All concerned agreed that it did'nt work and wont be repeated. The strength of this event is people come and enjoy the whole thing ...music....walking....drinking.. camping...swapping songs...and it's free. Thats what we will cocentrate on. If any body has ideas to improve any aspect of this event, lets hear them. There is no formal structure so we can make what ever changes the participants want.
Cheers Tony

I never said any were the best did I?
I was conversing with Carol who was about the only one who actualy showed any interest in going or in getting the thread somewhere near the top 500 in the list of threads on mudcat.
I dont owe anyone any explanations.
I dont usualy enter into debates with anonymouse guests unless I actually know who they are.
And I like to tell those whose music/singing/playing/performance
I have experienced that I have enjoyed it and that is the case with Carol who is a nice person, whom I have met a couple of times, and who sang some great songs.
Carol is a "Proper Singer" because she sings a song with feeling and commitment,in a style that reflects the period and history of the song and unaccompanied.
This seems, from my brief sojourn into the world of the folky to be what is accepted as being a proper singer.
That is my opinion.
If that in some way is threatening to your veiw of the world then I am very sorry.
Its a shame you are not going to contribute further to this thread as one of the few attendees who has bothered to post.
And it would be nice to read one from you that I didnt find insulting, that was about the event, was not toadying up to Tony,or name dropping re who you have played with.
Hopefully we will meet at Staithes and beer will resolve the discord.
My Name is Tim Leaning I am in Grimsby and I say "If you want to hear and play musc among others of the same bent go to Staithes and hav ea really good time.

Tony,
You do have a computer!
You know, I enjoyed your songs so much the first time we went to Staithes?
You really have organised a brilliant event.
The music is superb all round. People of any level of ability and playing any style of accoustic music, are made to feel welcome. And that they contribute equally
I think we are all stars on the day.
It is great that although you and your mates do all the work organisng and sorting it out for us.
We all can come along and feel we were a part of it,not just the faceless nameless ones who go to make up the statistics for attendance at other types of events.
Luckily there is none of the feeling you get some places were the locals sort of like the idea of people coming as long as they know their place and dont presume to be as important as the regulars are.
You know re the jazz band,as long as there are alternatives for those not enamoured of the artform it is quite a nice touch as it reflects the tastes and sensibilities of the landlord and possibly his regular customers.
Well done Tony and thank you so much.
You are lovely.

Will much still be going on on Sunday?

We have a gig in York on Friday and are then off to a birthday party in a castle in Northumberland but might manage to detour on the way back for Sunday lunchtime if things will still be happening.

I had a very enjoyable evening last year sitting in the pub on the harbour singing and playing with a most agreeable bunch of people so it would be good to do it again. Only sad that I won't make it on the busier times.

I would like to point out that I in no way intend any of these comments to imply that the pork pies,or the blue skies or the understanding of the old Git or my posts,or Tonies brilliant organising of two Jazz bands for this year is intended to imply that any one elses contribution is lesser, smaller, lacking in equal importance, unapreciated, less acceptable, unhelpfull, unwelcome or in any way whatsoever thought less of .....

But it is a really great long weekend in a lovely location with loads of people all having a good time.
It really is worth it.
In fact apart from spending the same amount of time, doing the same thing, getting just as drunk and then having a whole load of really attractive persons of you own personal favourite gender wanting to make you really extra happy(and your partner being ok with it)
I cant think of a better way to spend a long weekend.
(NOt just at the Moment anyhow)
There was some really nice Banjo playing went on there last year.
(Not that all the other instruments that were played, were played in any way less profficiently and not that there needs to be an instrument of any kind involved to provide some fine music,or poetry or mime(?)
Or that the human voice is not to be counted as an instrument.)
But In my own personal opinion I found it to be very enjoyable.

It is such a good time mate.
YOu hear Folk,blues,Country,americana(?)bluegrass,original stuff,Irish
a bit of rock loads of humour and lots of other stuff!
(All exponents of accoustic music take it a as read you are welcome)
YOu get a good natured banter and loads of supportive people around willing you to do well, and listening intently.
Teh beer last year was a good price at the Top pub not bad at the bottom either.
And as well as the pub sessiona morning, afternoon and night,a large hall is available through the night and the music just goes on.
There are people around who have been playing for decades and newbees like us(I mean me and the boss).I asked peopel last year to show me how to play a little better and got some great close up veiws af really good players in action.
no one minded at all
all the venues are none smoking.
If you cant tell by now
I quite liked it last year.
LOL

A suggestion has been made that I meet up with twangler and non proper singer as eary as possable over this weekend and buy them both a pint . Good idea. Are you up for it? I also had an idea that you do a duet together . The song I have in mind is an old Vin Garbutt song.......... May or Might Never. Thers not much time but you should be able to sort the first verse out .......Any one else care to join in??

Kind friends and companions come join me in rhyme

And lift up your voices in chorus with mine

We'll sing and be merry, all grief to refrain

For we may or might never all meet here again

Chorus

Oh here's the health, to the company and to my lass

Lets drink and be merry all out of one glass

Let's drink and be merry, all grief to refrain

For we may or might never all meet here again

Thanks Tony

I am hoping to get over at some point during the weekend. My family lived at Staithes for hundreds of years and made their living from the sea. Some of the songs I have written take history and attachment to the sea as their themes I also feel a strong affinity to Staithes after visiting regularly as a young child when family still lived there. I often fished out of Staithes also which was a great feeling especially given my family history is so closely tied to Staithes and the sea.
I look forward to spending some time sharing songs as I did last year cant wait
Cheers everyone , Mark Longster

Sorry, I'll be at Saddleworth Folk Festival this weekend as well.
Had seriously considered coming to Staithes but was seriously put off by comments Tim the Twangler made on Mudcat on the "10th Saddleworth" thread (17 July).
It's no good having someone that supposedly acts as a spokesperson and representative of Staithes Music weekend going onto other threads and slagging off other folk festivals.
I am sure that the Staithes weekend is a brilliant weekend and I was very tempted to come to it but Tim has done you a disservice by disrespecting Saddleworth folk goers.
He says I 'misunderstood' him and that his comments were only meant to be 'irony, humour and banter'but I don't think so.
It could be that his mouth runneth over without considering the implications of what he is saying. In which case I do apologise to him. But if he is truly a representative and official spokesperson of Staithes Music weekend he really must be careful about what he says and try to stop antagonising people.
He's even managed to do this on this thread!
Sorry to bring a negative tone to this thread but I think it had to be said.
I sincerely wish you all a fantastic weekend and in the spirit of all us folkies that seek peace and harmony, god bless you all.
Chris

Hi Soldier boy, have a good time at Saddleworth - AND all the rest of you who attend there.
I think you've talked a lot of sense above, T.the T. does go over board rather a lot , maybe he's not used to these type of "meets".
With 2 similar threads running it's been a bit of an over-sell
I might have a walk down to Staithes with a mate of mine over the weekend if the weather stays OK. If I do - I'll give you precis.
Cheers

There are three threads 'cos I put two on and someone else did another
Seems I was'nt the only one found the whinging of some contributers to be silly.
Hope you all enjoyed whichever event you chose to attend
I apologise to any who took offense at what I put as that was not at all the intention.
I do feel however that some people who read these threads are a bit strange or overly sensitive and just as opinionated as I am accused of being;
But hey thats life innit and if we were all the same it would be a much less interesting world.
Villan how is life treating you and how is it having all that spare time on your hands?
(Yes I am joking family life does not really allow of spare anything)
All best to all of you and good luck with the weather for all upcoming events.

Unfortunately this happens when people don't know how to use Mudcat.

They don't realise that when the thread disappears it hasn't been obliterated but is waiting to be refreshed.
If only they would set the filter box to 3 days or one week or one year etc and search, then they would find that everything that has ever been written about Staithes is still there.

Steers Music Fest was mostly ok but was hijacked by geordie "proper singers" with their dullsville historic ditties. The Jazz was cool and if you are a real live music fan, genres are irrelevant. Warbling on about old stuff in an accent only intelligable to Gazza or Bobby Thompson doesn't pass for music to the majority although I concede it does form an essential part of a great weekend but 2011 saw far too much unaccompanied drivel.
Aretha, Dionne,Sam Cooke - now they're PROPER SINGERS
