This would be great, Gulliver! But I suppose you have to come to Bavaria to do this, haha. Anyhow, all the best! And many thanks to Ulli.

Manfred

Subject: Lyr Add: DANKESCHÖN UND AUF WIEDERSEH'N
From: Leadbelly
Date: 11 Feb 07 - 10:03 AM

Last but not least, Gulliver, here comes the "official" version of the above-mentioned song. It differs slightly from Ulli's version but without a doubt, he made a good job.

DANKESCHÖN UND AUF WIEDERSEH'N
Musik: Eric Hein

So, nun sing' mal schön,

Manfred

Hi Ulli,
I believe that is what Gulliver wanted!

Great!

Gulliver, now keep on singing this tune completely.

sorry I forgot about the end

I think I know this song but I am not absolutely sure about the words.
I give it a try (that is what I remember)

Danke schön und auf Wiedersehn
heute fährt ein Schiff über's Meer.
Winkend will ich am Hafen stehn,
denn der Abschied fällt mir so schwer.
Alles Schöne geht zu Ende,
reicht zum Abschied mir die Hände
und ich bitt dich komm bald wieder
zu mir zurück.
Oh, Oh danke schön und ....

Norval, nice song although I only know the band version of Bert without singing. On the other hand: where is the ship, sailing upon the sea/ocean today?(second line of what Gulliver can remember)
But I'm relatively sure that it's the same melody than my proposal (see above)which is funny because question arises who really composed this song: Schwabach & Gabler or Büttner & Hein? Or somebody else?

Aren't there any other people from Germany like Wilfried an me knowing about the song requested?

Manfred

Subject: Lyr Add: DANKE SCHOEN (from Wayne Newton)
From: GUEST,Norval
Date: 08 Feb 07 - 12:13 PM

Gulliver, this may be the one you want.

DANKE SCHOEN
Wayne Newton version
(Kurt Schwabach & Milt Gabler/Bert Kaempfert)

Danke schoen, darling, danke schoen,
Thank you for all the joy and pain.
Picture shows, second balcony, was the place we'd meet,
Second seat, go Dutch treat, you were sweet.

Danke schoen, darling, danke schoen,
Thank you for funny cards from Spain.
I recall Central Park and all,
How you tore your dress, what a mess, I confess, that's not all.

Danke schoen, darling, danke schoen,
Thank you for walks down Lover's Lane,
I can see hearts carved on a tree,
Letters intertwined for all time, yours and mine, that was fine.

Danke schoen, darling, danke schoen,
Thank you for seeing me again.
Though we go on our separate ways,
Still the mem'ry stays for always,
My heart says, danke schoen, auf weidersehn, danke schoen.

Wilfried, yes, that might explain why I recall this melody being used as a signature tune on TV. I like the melody, but prefer the "original" words--I can't remember where I heard them first, maybe on a trip to Kiel or Hamburg. I'm always on the lookout for interesting German songs because we often have Germans coming to sessions during the Summer.

Anyway, thanks for all the help.

I'll be away for a few days at the Mudcat meeting in Portaferry, but will look in here again when I get back.

Gulliver, it well can be, that these are not the lyrics you are looking for. But anyhow, "my" version was written by Hein & Büttner according to site of "Shanty-Chor Rheinmöwen Köln e.V." Please have a look.
Wilhelm Kraus of SCRK sent it to me after my request.

Obviously, there do exist more than one version.

Leadbelly's version is an adaption of the original song for bands at the end of a show, a way of saying good bye.

Gulliver - I only could give you a link to the songbook and where to obtain it. But I'm not sure wether you'll find there the original version or Leadbelly's.

Hi Leadbelly, many thanks for your efforts, but your song is
different yet again, ie, it's a third song with this name--it's not the
Blasmusikkapella-type song by Wolf/Katz, nor the Matrosenlied-type by
Hein and Büttner (which is the one I'm looking for) that starts:

Danke schön und auf Wiedersehen
Heute faehrt Dein Schiff ueber's Meer
ending with
Und die Zeit mit Dir war schoen (or something similar)

We'll get it yet!

Good news, Gulliver! I believe here is what you want:

Dankeschön und auf Wiederseh'n.
Es war wieder mal wunderschön.
Hoffen wir , daß es Spaß gemacht
und wir Freude Euch heut' gebracht.
Uns're Show ist nun zu Ende
und wir reichen Euch die Hände,
und wir freuen uns schon heut' auf's nächste mal.

::Dankeschön auch für den Applaus,
wir wünschen einen guten Weg nach Haus.::

(8 bars to sum, repeat song)

Best wishes,

Manfred from Germany

Oh, just to confuse things: I did another (audio) search and found a totally different "Dankeschön und auf Wiedersehn",
a Blasmusik song, by Wolf and Katz(?). The one by Hein and Büttner, as pointed out by Leadbelly,
seems to be the one I'm looking for.

Thanks Leadbelly.

Note however that a search on Altavista gets
604 000 hits for Danke schön, but only 142 000 for Dankeschön.
The song title is spelt different ways, and I tried both formats,
also of Wiedersehen (my German is pretty good), without result.

Gulliver: I believe that the correct title of the song you are looking for goes as follows: "Dankeschön und auf Wiederseh'n". This song was written by Eric(h) Hein and Rudi Büttner. Although some choirs are claiming to sing this song (try research by internet)I could not find the lyrics.

Thanks, Wilfried, but there are no lyrics on those sites (that I can find).

BTW, Bubblyrat, I'm not German, I'm Irish (and live in Dublin)...

Interesting place, Zwolle. My tutor ( she comes from Den Haag, but lives in Poole !! )told me that, during the war, the Germans rounded up & confiscated virtually all the bikes in the Netherlands. Ever since then, apparently, the thing to do on spotting a German is to exclaim "where"s my bike ? !! ".I gather that most young Germans today have absolutely NO idea why they are being asked this !!But what fun !!

And I've almost forgotten my Dutch (learned from my girl-friend from Zwolle).
Well, as you can see from the subject matter, it's a lyrics request, and that's the name of the song.
Can't help you with your bicycle, though ;-)

This German song may have been the signature tune of a TV programme.
I'd like to use it as a closing song on occasion. It begins:

Danke schön und auf Wiedersehen
Heute faehrt Dein Schiff ueber's Meer

Vielen Dank im Voraus !
